To make the most of Mr. Land’s writings, you need more than a little background in continental European philosophy, from Kant to Deleuze. If so, they’re a hell of a ride. Certainly the most original extension of this tradition that I can think of. Most of all because Land is an empiricist in the clothing of an aesthete. Possibly an esoteric writer in the sense designated by Leo Strauss. This would make sense, as Strauss notes great esoteric writers arise in conjunctions of place and times with political censorship. If the future demands a reckoning of philosophy with biology, then Land has already been working there.

Just fantastic. I haven't gotten all of the way through it yet, but I'm loving it. Additionally, this book FEELS very high quality in one's hands.

The man is fast, the man is multiple, he jumped over the moon with the silver spoon and brought back space rocks.

I'm not going to write a lot in the sense of context of who is Nick Land and what this volume comprises; academic reviews are available at search engines. I'm giving it three stars for two reasons:1) "Collected writings" is a fair term, if very literal. The book is organized as a series of chapters that start out as dense essays, if already experimental in style, and decohere gradually into frantically argued polemics and finally free verse. This should be pointed out; it's about half the value proposition the estimated number of pages would seem to make it to be.2) This is a Kindle edition of an academic work without page numbers, again. This is pointed out again and again by many many people who have been buying Kindle editions of academic books. Page numbers fluctuate with devices and, in computer clients, window sizes; this is a problem for anyone who might need to quote citations into their own academic work. This isn't hard to fix, and needs to be fixed -- across all academic presses putting out Kindle publications in the humanities. Including this.

Bought this for my grandson who is on a debate team and needed it for research. He is very happy!!

This series has me hooked! The plots are amazing,the dialogue is very realistic as well as humorous loves snippets between the two main characters. I am giving this ten stars since five doesn’t seem enough. This book series has something for guys and gals, interest will be gran with the first chapter And kept until the very last chapter. The only warning I can give is Do not start these books unless you intend to do nothing but read from beginning to end.

The Chase has it all! Evanovich and Goldberg create a fast paced action adventure featuring mystery and murder, and the cleverly planned thievery of priceless works of art by a consummate con artist and an FBI Special Agent. All this with the assistance of a rag-tag team of former criminals and the aid of high-tech military incursions by military retirees. And of course, there is the ever-present sexual tension between FBI agent Kate O'Hare and the sexiest con man ever, Nicholas Fox. What's not to love? A fun filled read that finds you smiling again and again, and glad that you've read Books 1 and 2, The Pros and Cons and The Heist, and eager to read the next book in this new series!

The introductory mini-novel and the first episode of this series were so much more entertaining. This book seemed to have to force the situations, rather than going with a natural flow. I'm not sure I'll read another episode. The airplane ride was interesting but extremely far from any kind of believable reality and the relationship between Fox and O'Hare, rather than going forward or backward just seems to have stalled. I am avidly looking forward to Top Secret Twenty-One, but I'm not sure I'll read another episode of Fox and O'Hare

I like the continuity of characters from the previous book to this one. I'm also appreciative of the working tension between Kate and Nick. The level of interaction is just about right. I'm glad there is not a lot of obvious sexual relationship - rather just a hint that they might be interested - someday. The plot is also a good one. There is only one place in the book that I believe might be a bit 'far fetched', but everything fits together - so the reader does not have to dwell on the unlikely circumstance. I'm ready for more adventures with Kate and Nick.

Yes, the story calls for multiple suspensions of disbelief. However, as the reader, you’re having so much fun joining in with Nick and Kate, you don’t care. Turn the pages as fast as you can and hold on.

I really like this collaboration Evanovich has going with Lee Goldberg. Let's face it, her Stephanie Plum series is getting a little stale. But this isn't. Nick Fox is a charming rogue, who even after two books in, you're not quite sure if he'd throw Kate under the bus despite his attraction to her. And tightly wound Kate, who you'd just love to see let her hair down a little, you know she's fighting with her desire to throw his charming butt in jail and throw away the key, and her other desire for same attractive butt. It's a conundrum! And their crazy scams to ensnare the bad guys just gets more crazy with every book.

I choose this rating because this Is what I think it deserves.My dislike came in the beginning of the book, I usually can pick up a book and start reading and can not put it down. With this book it took several attempts not to keep reading. I would stop and try the next day and still could not get into it. I t took all the way to past the middle of the book to start holding my attention. I know there is another sequeal coming out soon, and not really sure I will purchase it.Not sure I would really recommend this to any of my friends who are avid readers like me.

I loved this book (first in the series). The second one was ok, but the 3rd and 4th were good (better than #2), but do read them all in order... I recommend all! I hate to see the series run out!

I really enjoyed this book and found that I had aha moments and revelations come to me while reading Jennifer's experiences. Like her, I look successful to the outside world and seem tough. I have a flourishing career, a nice home and car, I travel and I have many friends and male suitors. And like Jennifer I have made many mistakes in love and never realized that I have allowed disrespect and neglect and poor treatment because I was always putting the man first- even when it was detrimental to me. I also have allowed my older sister's and parents' judgments to impact my self worth and how I beat myself up when I make mistakes. It dawned on me as I was finishing the book that I really like who I am and I am proud of my heart, my kindness and the way I connect with and help people. I am also able to see that I made bad decisions with men because I wanted to please my family and be married and have children as they expected. I know that things for me will no longer be the same. I am having a much needed conservation with my parents and sister and I am no longer dating men from a place of fear. I can sincerely say that I love myself, the way I am right now and today. And whomever doesn't love me and respect me for me, is not worthy of my love, friendship and being in my life. I encourage women to read this book and to be reminded that we matter, and we need to put ourselves and our needs first.

Both my wife and I read this introspective autobiography by Jennifer Lopez, a woman we have long admired. At times eye-watering, we must understand that fame and fortune really doesn't change what we still need out of life.

Jennifer Lopez has always been my favorite style icon and celebrity. She single handedly transformed the beauty world with her large derrière in the 1990s. Before her nothing but emancipated waif looking white women symbolized "beauty." As a Latina with a body like J Lo I am forever indebted to her for making the world realize how gorgeous women of color are. With that said I love J Lo so this may be a bias review.Everything J Lo touches turns into gold. This book is no exception.Everyone complaining about how vague this book was clearly did not read the introduction in which Lopez proclaims this is NOT a tell all book!This book was meant to explain J Lo's journey and transformation throughout the 'Dance Again' world tour. 'True Love' describes her spiritual transformation and does NOT divulge about past lovers.It is a book that makes you realizes you must love yourself before you can love anyone else.The one thing that really stood out to me was when she defined what integrity meant to her. Integrity according to Lopez is having respect for yourself and not allowing someone to treat you badly. If you allow this mistreatment you are betraying yourself. When I read this section it was as though a light bulb went off. As a woman I have put up with crap for way too long with undeserving men and could totally relate to Jennifer on this level.With all the diamonds, Bentley's, private jets, and millions of dollars Jennifer is simply a regular woman who admittedly had low self esteem and held on to long to jerks who treated her badly because she just didn't want to be alone. I always wondered why this attractive, powerful, successful woman could never be alone? Why did she always jump from one relationship to another? I got the answer to those questions by reading this book. This book humanizes Lopez and made me understand and love her even more.It's a real page turner and a must read. I read the entire book in one day!

While not a bad book, this book is really only for true Jennifer Lopez fans. Those of us who are once in a while viewers of her on TV, didn't get much out of this book.While the photography is stunning, the book merely reiterates to women what so many other books of this ilk do. She reminded me to love myself and do what makes me happiest in life. Good for you, Jenn. As another Puerto Rican woman,and dancer, I am so happy I decided to read this book because it caused me to remember to be the best I can be, dance because that is when I'm happiest and get back out there and live. The color palettes and formulas are useful as a starting point; however, there are few examples of the colors used in an actual portrait to give them context. Having more illustrations using the formulas would have been very helpful.The racial/ethnic categories show a very limited understanding of what people of color actually look like. For instance, the author states that he has more Caucasian base-colors mixed than any other, “because Caucasian skin tones have the largest range.”The largest range? Really?He has a category for Latino skin tones, and a few options within that category. But Latinos are not a distinct race; they are not all olive, or light brown. They are a group composed of people ranging from white to indigenous to African, with much admixture. Likewise, there are a few brown and red color options for black people, but black people range in color from very pale to very dark; like Latinos, there is a good amount of racial admixture within black populations. You could say the same for Asians, perhaps not the mixture, but there is a diversity of skin tones, and far more than the few shown here. India, alone, has people who range from very light to very dark, many with undertones that are not commonly found elsewhere. This is not just an academic objection, but a practical one. The categories are simply insufficient. So, if you are painting people who are not strictly Caucasian, just ignore the arbitrary classifications, and use the swatches to find colors that may suit.I found that red/pinkish/orange-based skin tones predominate, and it was harder to find representations of yellow/neutral/olive undertones (this is an issue with cosmetic foundations too, incidentally.)The formulas for hair colors were very useful. The section on watercolor is rather small (pages 38-43), so another resource may be necessary. Overall, an interesting book, which works for many. Just not what I needed.

Wow, white is not white and black is not black. So many shades and colors to make them both!I am learning about skin tones and my makeup artist instructor uses this book to teach color theory for Makeup Artist.

As an art teacher I suggested this book to several of my students. I like the spiral binding and the clear way it is laid out for easy reference. If is broken up into sections, so if you want a quick eye color its is easy to find. There are al lot of different ways to make and mix colors with acrylics, and just like cooking, getting a different perspective on color is helpful, The pages have a plastic coating that can be wiped off if used in the studio. In the back of the book there is a reusable chart that is gridded for laying out a particular color to get the right ratios of paint. This is a well though out book.Recently one of my favorite Acrylic paint companies offered a contest to artists for a color they mix, that might later be sold by this company. We all have different ways of getting colors, and it is interesting that even paint companies recognize that mixing custom colors is an art and there are a lot of different to go about it.

It came in as described but it is quite hard to read and understand, took longer to make colors using this book than watching a video. The only good thing Is that it gives you name and photo of the colors Even though the chart wasn't helpful.

I'm a portrait artist, and whether I'm following a specific picture, going off different references, or just painting from my head I love having this reference. After going through some color theory and mixing techniques, it gives some basic color recipes for skin tone bases and then adds to them for different skin tones. It classifies based on the nationality and tone of your subject, then gives you a page of recipes for that skin type based on the lighting of your subject. I mainly use it for the skin recipes, but it also has some eye, lip and hair color recipes. It mainly supports oil paint, but also has a helpful section on watercolor and a conversion chart for acrylic. I'd recommend it for anyone who is into doing portraits.

Very helpful, but some of the formulas need to be checked, because some of the colors dont match the labels that they have. had to improvise to get some of the shades i want. So its not 100% accurate but it gives you a rough idea about the shades that you want.

About the Author

Cathy O’Neil earned a Ph.D. in math from Harvard, was postdoc at the MIT math department, and a professor at Barnard College where she published a number of research papers in arithmetic algebraic geometry. She then chucked it and switched over to the private sector. She worked as a quant for the hedge fund D.E. Shaw in the middle of the credit crisis, and then for RiskMetrics, a risk software company that assesses risk for the holdings of hedge funds and banks. She is currently a data scientist on the New York start-up scene, writes a blog at mathbabe.org, and is involved with Occupy Wall Street.Rachel Schutt is the Senior Vice President for Data Science at News Corp. She earned a PhD in Statistics from Columbia University, and was a statistician at Google Research for several years. She is an adjunct professor in Columbia’s Department of Statistics and a founding member of the Education Committee for the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering at Columbia. She holds several pending patents based on her work at Google, where she helped build user-facing products by prototyping algorithms and building models to understand user behavior. Not for the general reader.This is a somewhat difficult book about an emerging discipline of Data Science by a pre-eminent practitioner. But it is a necessary book to explain what this discipline encompasses. It is still too early to be absorbed into popular culture.This is really a text book which requires the reader to do the exercises so that the reader can grasp the topics. This is what makes the book difficult for the general reader. One has to be sufficiently competent enough with computers, programming, and statistics in order to appreciate the evolution of Data Science.Despite its difficulty, this book is a necessary introduction for the general public to understand the threat to democratic society from the misuse of Data Science. O'Neil explains this further in her call-to-arms (Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy).Unfortunately, public culture still regards computers as magic. Say the right words, and the answer magically appears. Data Science is far more than just using computers -- Data Science involves the collection, analysis, cleaning, and presentation of enormous amounts of data.

Book review - Doing Data Science by O'Neil and Schutt, O'Reilly Media.More breadth than depthWhat is data science? The book Doing Data Science not only explains what data science is but also provides a broad overview of methods and techniques that one must master in order to call one self a data scientist. The book is based on a course about data science given at Columbia University. However it is not to be considered as a text book about data science but more as a broad introduction to a number of topics in data science.In the spring of 2013 I followed two Coursera courses. One about the statistical programming language R and one on Data Analysis. I had for some time been looking for a book that could be used as a follow-up reading on topics in data science. This was the reason I picked up "Doing Data Science".The book begins with a chapter about what data science is all about is followed by four chapters on topics like statistical inference, explanatory data analysis, various machine learning algorithms, linear and logistic regression, and Naive Bayes. I have a background in both mathematics and statistics and I was able to understand these chapters but the material is covered in such broad terms that I find it hard to believe that a newcomer to this topics will understand or gain much knowledge from reading these chapters. Basic math is presented about the models but without some kind of detailed explanation one cannot develop any deeper intuition for the approach explained.The best parts of the book is definitely chapter 6 to 8 and 10. In here we find interesting discussion about coverage of data science applied to financial modeling, extracting information from data, and social networks. I really enjoyed the examination of time stamped data, the Kaggle Model, feature selection, and case-attribute data versus social network data. The math behind these topics was however once again explained quite superficial. Centrality measures is central to social network analysis but it is very hard to develop intuition for there measures without a more detailed explanation about the underlying math. These chapters contains lots of useful resources for finding additional information about the discussed topics.Data visualization is an integral part of data science for communication results. Beginners in the field of data science needs concrete and easy to follow instruction on how to get started with visualization. Unfortunately the book focuses more on the use of data visualization in modern art projects. The content is simply to abstract for beginners to learn about the usage of visualization in data science.When I was browsing the book before actual buying it I was kind thrilled to see that it covered topics like causality and epidemiology. Topics that I did not found covered in any other book about data science. However the chapter about epidemiology is not about using data science in epidemiology but 'just' about using data science to evaluate the methods used in epidemiology. Likewise there seems to be no link between data science and causality. I later discovered that the authors used an entire blog post ([...] to explain why causality was part of the university course underlying the book. This material or parts of it should have made it into the book. I am still not convinced that causality is a topic in data science.There are several examples in which the book assumes the reader to have knowledge of US government structure and organizations. Examples include page 292 when discussing US health care databases and page 298 where FDA is mentioned without further introduction or explanation about what FDA is.A book than contains programming examples should always make the code accessible to download. Typing in the code yourself is simply waste of time. It is possible to download some of the datasets used in the book through GitHub. But the code does not seem to be available. I also own the electronic version of the book and I tried to copy-paste some of the examples from the e-book but there are several examples of code that hasn't been proof written or tested prior to publication. The sample code misses references to required R libraries or refers to computer folder structures on some local Columbia University computer. The companion datasets that can be downloaded on GitHub consists of a number of Excel files. The R sample code uses the gdata package to load these Excel files into R for further analysis. It took be quite some time to figure out why this process didn't work on a Windows computer. The gdata package requires Perl to be installed on the computer and this is not default software on Windows. In my opinion one should always publish data in a simple format, e.g. csv files and definitely not proprietary formats like xls for Excel files.Data Science is both science and a lot of practical experience. I guess the title of the book Doing Data Science tries to capture that. You need to do data science in order to learn it. The covered topics are interesting but the material is more breadth than depth. Luckily there are lots of useful links and resources to additional materials. Personally I would prefer more details about the actual data science topics like e.g. extracting meaning from data and social network analysis and less focus on math. The book already requires some knowledge of math, statistics and programming, so why not presume that the reader has the background knowledge and dive straight into the data science discussions.I really like the idea about having a lot of different people present various topics in data science and the book is well written and contains lots of useful resources for further studies of data science. I will recommend to book to people new to the subject but be aware of the fact that source code is not available and that is a major drawback.Disclosure: I review for the O'Reilly Reader Review Program and I want to be transparent about my reviews so you should know that I received a free copy of this ebooks in exchange of my review.

We are in 2013, no one knows what the heck is “data science” but there are plenty of jobs out there. Here is a course for you, future data rockstar. Rachel and Cathy invited a bunch of people from industry to talk about a wide range of topics: from statistical inference to data visualization with plenty of algorithms, R code and data sets. This is therefore a hands on course with good theoretical depth. And the take away message is: if the world is a bunch of data pipes, don't just be a plumber. Rather behave like the freaking Mario Bros!

It's an OK book. It has some nice parts, although you don't learn data science from it. It's like a compendium of blog posts about where data science is used. There are some great articles on it, from interviewees, however, it lacks something.

The books is fairly dated, a lot of the exercises have broken links/outdated code.

Reading this book, you feel like you are talking to the authors. With 10 years of experiences in data analytics, I can still learn so much from the authors' way of explaining Big data to novice. If you like "Cajun Cooking", you will like the recipes in this cookbook ... please note the recipes are developed using the "old style" rice cooker ... the ones I have tried in the "new style" (Sanyo) rice cooker did not turn out well ... less water is required when using the "new style" rice cooker ... I'm still working on a conversion ... the recipes I have tried using the "old style" rice cooker turned out great and were very good ... but the recipes are great even if you decide to cook them in a standard pot using the stove top ... RPH

If you like Cajun food this is the book for you! The sauce piquant recipes and crawfish and shrimp recipes are amazing!! Cabbage rolls used to take all day to make and now I use the cabbage casserole recipe to make it easier. This is the only recipe book where I have actually made and loved 75% of the recipes. And they all use simple ingredients that I keep in stock already. Nothing fancy I have to buy!! I know it sounds weird to use a rice cooker for meals but this is like a crockpot that cooks in 45min or less. If you have a fancy rice cooker you need to use the rice setting, not slow cook. And if it says to cook for a certain time then I set my timer and stop the rice cooker after that so the shrimp are not overdone.My family likes meals with substance and not just rice. This book also has a lot of recipes with potatoes instead of rice. The fajita chicken stuffed baked potato recipe is great! And it just uses frozen French fries for the potato part. It doesn't get much easier than that!!This is the perfect book for someone who loves to crockpot but wants their meal done in 45 min or less! I wish I was paid or given some compensation for this review , but sadly not. My aunt gave it to me years ago and my friends are always asking where to buy it.

I was hoping that this book would have "from scratch" recipes. Instead, it uses so many canned and packaged mixes that the food becomes more of a chemical cocktail than a meal.

I wasn't sure I'd be able to get the hang of using rice cooker for anything but rice. But as soon as this book arrived I read it from cover to cover and could hardly wait to try his recipes. This book is a little gem. With a little imagination you can easily adjust ingredients to make your recipes more spicy, less spicy, beef instead of chicken, broth instead of canned tomatoes with chiles, less butter, etc. etc. This is a no brainer. To some people it might look too plain but that's fine with me. It's just a good, easy to follow, minimum preparation, delicious collection of recipes, some of which are typical of louisiana cooking....which is what the author himself did not dispute. I have never used as many recipes out of any cookbook I own..and I own a lot!!! I'm currently going through all the recipes but so far my favorites are Shrimp Jambalaya, Black Eyed Peas & Sausage Jambalaya, Tex-Mex Pasta, Chicken fried rice, and Mexican Rice. There are also soup recipes, yams, potato and cabbage recipes but haven't tried these yet. Mr Bertrand I'm anxiously waiting for your next cookbook, if there is one, but in the meantime thanks for this one!

My latest "kick" is rice cookers. I learned you can make entire delicious meals in them, not just cook rice. This cookbook makes rice cooking/entire meals easy. It's mostly a Cajun cookbook but you'll find many delicious other recipes too. I had a question, emailed the author, and he actually emailed me back with the answer!! Recipes are for 8 to 10 cup On/Off/Warm rice cookers, not for fuzzy logic cookers. Rice cooker recipes can be made in the fuzzy logic cookers but adjustments would have to be made. I'm also experimenting using olive oil instead of butter and the author has been helpful with that. I HIGHLY recommend this rice cooker cookbook for On/Off/Warm ricer cookers.

It was handy to tell me the different types of rice and how they are cooked but that was where the helpfulness ended. The meals seemed quite involved for a book that states "Fast home cooking for busy people" and it just wasn't that helpful. I guess some people might find it useful but to me I had to do too many adaptations to find it necessary.

I didn't find any of the recipes appitizing enough to want to try. Only ordered the kindle addition and the paging is messed up. Titles for recipes on bottom of page before it and such. Its ok, but wish I hadn't spent the 3 dollars on it.

This book is chock full of one-pot-meals that you can prepare and cook in your Rice Cooker appliance. Jambalayas, casseroles, pastas, soups, potatoes. Yum. And if you are into spicy foods this is definitely the book for you. Lots of Mexican, Italian and Cajun cooking. And after each recipe there are reviews from people who have tried it and gave their opinions and alternate suggestions.

Instant Pot Cookbook: 550 Instant Pot Recipes by Angela Rossi I love cookbooks I have many so it was easy to compare with others, I will say first that the number of recipes is amazing, 550 recipes, when you read them carefully you find out that one has just a little twist that the previous one and the other has some additions to the first one, but it doesn't matter because they happened to be different recipes with different tastes, It is arranged by type of principal component, like beef recipes, chicken recipes, etc. which makes it easier to look for what you are looking for. At the end of the book, she wrote a section of Paleo recipes which is a plus when you think that in these days many people are trying to eat healthier, so that is a plus to the book. There are some pictures, but for a cookbook I think they are not enough as we say “love is born from the view” especially talking about food, so I would have like to have more pictures, other thing that may be good or not is that you need to use the Instant Pot that she uses or a very similar one, which means that if you do not have one and are going to buy it is perfect to have the latest technology, but if you already have an instant pot that is not the new “model” you can hardly follow the recipes because they are based in the new technology.

This book has so many recipes that sound delicious and are actually good for you too. What I really appreciated is that there are so many that are vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, or paleo. Essentially, there is something that pretty much anyone can eat, no matter what they are comfortable eating. If there are things that you really like to eat, pretty much anything you can think of, there happens to be a recipe for it in this handy book. There are even tons of desserts. Besides that, there is a rundown of what the instant pot is and why it is helpful to use. This makes it a great companion book for people that are beginners, as well as those that have used this piece of machinery before. My favorite parts were the rice and beans sections, since those are always something that are a staple at my house.

I can't recommend this book, because many recipes have misspellings or information that has been omitted that makes following the recipe extremely difficult. I can't believe this book got past the publishers.

Very informative. Detailed more then most recipes I have looked I at. Now need to find the best recipes for my family.
