I enjoyed these three stories, and the historical events that inspired some of the fun and interesting details. I always enjoy reading historical notes about the author’s inspiration at the end of each story. I have read other stories by this author and enjoy her writing so much that I decided to purchase this trio. I liked reading how the once wealthy mail order brides adjust to learning new skills and getting to know there would be husbands.
These short stories give a person a chance to escape to the West for romance and adventure. Nothing complicated or earth shaking. I recommend them for those looking for interesting short reads.
I like all the books by vivi holt. They keep my attention from beginning to end. I don't like to give a review for every book before i can go to the next one.
This review is written after listening to the audiobook of this box set.DELIA:Delia has had three seasons as a debutante but she's in no hurry to marry. She likes living with her parents in New York City, that is until her family loses its fortune, social standing, and reputation in the community when her father loses all his money. Then all the men who had been interested in her disappear.Della and her two sisters are sent West to become mail order brides. Livingston, Montana Territory is where Delia ends up. She is forced to adjust to her new life as the wife of a kind but unsophisticated cowboy turned banker. Della is unhappy and frustrated at first but as time goes by she learns how to cook and clean house and she also learns to accept and make friends with people who would be considered unacceptable to her so-called New York friends.Della has to make a choice when her father's wealth is restored, will she return to her privileged life in New York City or stay with the man she has come to love?HATTIE:The blurb for this book starts with: When Hattie Stout boards the train bound for the western frontier, she doesn't think things can get any worse. Her father lost his fortune and made her a pariah in New York society. Then, the man she was engaged to marry, backed out of the arrangement to marry his cousin. When her parents decide there is nothing left to do but send her west as a Mail Order Bride, she thinks she's hit rock bottom. She's wrong! The story starts with the stage Hattie is traveling on being attacked by outlaws and she finds herself in an even worse situation when she arrives in the small mining town and finds that her groom is not there to meet her, she has no money because of the holdup and is left on the street. Fortunately for her the sheriff of the town, Ed Milton, takes pity on her, he feeds her and finds her somewhere to stay.Ed is from the South and is a perfect gentleman, he is happy with where his life has taken him and the life he has made for himself but Hattie has dreams of going home but in order to do so she will have to earn her train fare and pay for her board and lodgings, no easy feat for a woman who has been pampered her entire life. Hattie, however, has an incredibly strong inner core and is determined to do this. There are a few things which could stop her from achieving this goal, the outlaws, the sheriff's deputy and the fact that she is falling in love with the sheriff. This story did not lag at all it flowed beautifully and held my attention the whole way throughPEARL:This is a story that I really enjoyed listening to it is such a unique story which captivated me totally. Pearl was unhappy when her parents sent her West to be Mail Order Bride. Her intended, Hilton, was a highly organized newspaperman with OCD issues whom she felt nothing for. She does manage to delay their nuptials but for how long?Hilton’s brother, Hank, was very different from his brother and she was attracted to him but afraid to let herself feel too much, he's a wanderer with no plans to settle down but her heart didn't seem to be listening to her! Pearl really needs to find herself and learn to make her own choices she's a strong woman who wants her independence but falls in love with an unsuitable man. Fortunately for her, he did realize that he was ready to settle down with her in the end.To add to the story there is a mysterious creature, what is it? This added an extra layer, and whilst I was trying to figure out what it could be I found myself laughing out loud several times. In all three stories, the characters are well developed and engaging they are also realistic and easy to connect to with because of their imperfections, faults, and attitudes.I loved the narration of these books it was so well done, each character was individually defined and there was never any confusion as to who was speaking - well done Meghan Kelly for the narration and Vivi Holt for the stories
The three books comprise of sisters and cousins who will find themselves in a riches to rags situation and their fathers deciding that the best thing for the girls will be to find them, husbands, making the women, Mail-order brides. This set was originally released as single books, written in tandem by two separate authors, Kit Morgan and Vivi Holt. Now you can have three stories in this box set by the author for less than the price of one story. The three stories cover Della Stout, Hattie Stout, and Pearl Stout and where their journeys will take them. They may not have a charmed life that had been their upbringing, but that doesn’t mean they won’t find happiness.Della (Cowboys & Debutantes Book 2) by Vivi HoltA FUTURE SHE COULD LOOK FORWARD TOEach of the Cowboys and Debutantes will read as a standalone book. The story will have the family of Della Stout in dire straits when s swindler damages her father’s business and the reputation of the Stout family. From one day being a social butterfly debutant to the family being destitute and now Della has been ostracized. The best her family can do for her and her sisters is to make matches as mail-ordered brides and to send them westward.Della will travel from New York to the Montana Territory to become the bride of a banker, Clement White, in the town of Livingston. It is a far cry from the lifestyle she was accustomed to. For Clement, he is hoping to have a partner, a helpmeet, someone to be able to make his life more pleasant. With Della, he gets a pampered girl who is clueless on how to run a home, cook, or clean. The plot will have a very patient and compassioned man, Clement, married to Della, who must learn how to cook, clean, and run a home. Clement has a wonderful reputation among the townspeople, and slowly Della will learn that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to her new husband. She also makes friends with some of the ladies that are looked down upon by some of the ladies of the church. These friendships will become her lifeline in her new hometown. What had started out as a disaster for the Stout family, will become a blessing in disguise for Della as she learns that she is right where she needs to be with her husband and future. The story is a clean historical western.Pearl (Cowboys and Debutantes Book 6) by Vivi HoltTHE TALES LEGENDS ARE MADE OFEach of the Cowboys and Debutantes will read as a standalone book. The story will have the family of Pearl Stout in dire straits when a swindler damages her father’s business and the reputation of the Stout family. From one day being a social butterfly debutant to the family being destitute and now Pearl’s father has made a mail-order match for her to Hilton Pullman, a newspaperman in Tucson, Arizona. Not only her but also her sisters have also become mail-ordered brides and sent them westward.Seventeen-year-old Pearl Stout will be shocked to learn her father has made a match for her to become the bride to Hilton Pullman without her opinion and placed on a train westward from her life in New York City. But once she arrives, she questions why she is allowing him to control her life since he didn’t care for her opinion on the matter and she decides to do her own thing. What a shock to apply and to be hired to become a stagecoach driver. She will talk her friend, Belle, into signing on too.“She was a pioneer woman now—strong, capable and at ease handling a team of horses.â€Hilton Pullman is a man who must have order, neatness, and control. He is thrown for a loop when his bride-to-be, Miss Pearl Stout of New York City announces she isn’t sure she is ready to marry. While he has rented an apartment for her, it was only to be a very short-term arrangement. Not only dealing with his errant mail-order bride but his older brother, Hank, has shown up in town and moves in with Hilton, disrupting her orderly world. The plot will have Pearl not wanting to be controlled by her father and deciding she isn’t willing to just marry unless she is in love. While Hilton is a nice man, she doesn’t feel the connection she wants in a marriage. Hank Pullman, Hilton’s older brother, has a reputation as a gunman and traveler, but when Hank and Pearl are together, there is more than just being friends. The area of Arizona is known as a legend of the Red Ghost and not once or twice, but several times now, Pearl and her friend and co-worker, Belle, have seen this monstrous creature. Pearl is determined to solve this mystery.“It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. It was orange and big, bigger than a horse, but it runs like a horse. Its head looks misshapen, and it’s got a hunchback. The sound it makes send shivers down your spine. I want to know why it carries a headless rider. It’s so macabre, so bizarre.â€Once Pearl and Hilton dissolve their betrothal, he moves on with plans with another young lady. Will Pearl become a spinster or will she find her happily ever after? While she and Hank become close, he has previously stated he has no plans for marriage and settling down. Maybe making her own way will work out.“She was in control of her future and had taken on challenges.â€What makes this story unique is that it is a story with a real legend that will be solved and has historical value to it. Also, there really were women who drove stagecoaches. While the story is fictitious, it is based on some actual events and truths, and the author has used her artistic liberties to create this amazing and fun story.
Della, Hattie and Pearl will delight you, but each book is a standalone and no character appears in the other books except through the mail when the girls write to each other. I'm not sure I would happily forgive my parents for selling me off as an mail order bride without my permission. The parents only got one of the men right and that took some time on Della's part to come to love and accept her groom. The other two don't even marry the man their parents set them up with and we thank the Lord in heaven for Hattie could never live with an outlaw. Pearl falls in love with the brother of the man who sent for her. Unfortunately, I feel the author did the man an extreme injustice when the man clearly had OCD. Pearl wrote him off because he didn't measure up to her expectations and she gave him no chance at all. I think Pearl was the most shallow of all the sisters. Wyatt, the brother, took every advantage to pull Pearl's attention and any affection she might have developed for his brother away, because he really wanted her.
