I bought this book and Auto Body Repair Technology, Fourth Edition. They are very similar since they have the same author and publisher. Collision Repair Fundamentals was a better classroom book and more user friendly, but there is more information in Auto Body Repair Technology.I recommend Auto Body Repair Technology for anyone that is looking to use the book as a reference or to learn on their own. I do not know what the 5th edition adds, but currently it is 10 times the price of the 4th edition and can't imagine them adding much information aside from waterborne paint.

A necessary book for anyone working in the field. Especially helpful for new employees.

I guess he did warn us with the picture on the front that reads "A Memoir of Fumbling Toward Adulthood", but I was disappointed that he stopped his tale at the point he got his first Broadway show - after all, he's been in 2 of the biggest hits in the past 15 years, I'd have liked to hear about his work on them and his famous friends (Gavin Creel is the only semi-famous person that appears in this book). I guess he's holding out for a 2nd book?Part inspiration for future actors, part a sad tale of love(s) gone wrong, but all heart, this really is a lovely debut for the author. He's sassy and brassy in all the right places, you'd definitely want to be in his posse in late night NYC.

Over-night success takes a LONG time to achieve. Andrew Rannell tells the story of his professional and personal life with great wit and charm. As a performer, naturally, he delivers the goods as an audio presentation without it ever feeling as if he is 'performing' his story for the microphone. If you are at all sensitive about gay life (I'm not - if you are, get over it...) you may relate to his personal/sex life stories as well, but they are not shared to be 'shocking' , in fact some young people in his camp may find his frankness inspiring. He paints a vivid picture of the NYC club scene of his youth as well as the long journey of luck, drive, and determination that has lead him to be the talented star he is today. My only complaint is (as is the case with all audio books) I would love to see the photos that the print edition must have! Would it kill them to give us a link to a PDF of the photos with memoirs like this?

as a big andrew rannells lover and fan, i may be a bit bias but i thoroughly enjoyed this book! i’m more into fiction and rarely read biography or nonfiction but his writing is so fun and it made the experience so delightful. anyone how knows andrew can see he has this wonderful energy and such a fun person and in his writings that personality really shines through! the book is full of wild and wacky stories to give you laugh but still shares dark past and give makes you view andrew in a different light. you really start to know him more and i’m happy i got to read this!! i really suggests it to anyone who wants to pursue a career in theater, book includes real stuggles from a very talented actor and funny theater jokes!!

What a great read. Rannells' writer-voice is fun and funny, which is not a surprise if you have ever heard him speak or watched an interview with him. If you enjoy his work as an actor, you will most likely enjoy this book as well. I was also struck by how touching--and honest--the book is. I'm part of the Omaha theatre community, so I know a bit about the world he grew up in. I was just getting involved in the community as he was preparing to leave, though I remember meeting him once after he saw a play I was in, and I was struck by what a friendly, open kid he was. To his credit, it looks like that quality remains in the man he has become.

I started this book when I came home from work one night and couldn’t put it down until I finished it roughly 4 hours later. One of the best and most relatable memoirs I’ve ever read. To me, it’s a perfect book.

There's a nice balance of humor and heart throughout the book. He's an easy person to relate to as he shared his feelings of not having a clue at what he was doing most of the time and just kinda had to learn along the way. Your heart breaks when he goes into detail about the times he was taken advantage of by sexual predators. When he starts to experience some success, you can't help but feel happy for him. Overall, a good memoir and I would love reading another book in which he talks about his life after making it big.I received a free advance copy from the publisher but was under no obligation to post a review. Was looking forward to this book but unfortunately everything in it is either outdated (the longest chapter being slate board routines) or gimmicked. There are only a few tricks that are impromptu. Almost everything requires preparation, which for some people is fine. Personally I dislike anything I cant do at a moments notice with a borrowed object.

This is one of the best sources to have to mental magic. There are effects in this book that fool other mentalist. This material has been overlooked and under used. It is the best investment you can make as a mentalist.

Interesting reveal of some standard techniques.Now to watch some youtube to see if I can learn about application and presentation

Practical mental magic includes a lot of magic tricks. I think that it is a good book for beginners of mental magic. Actually, the reason I bought this book is because the famous mentalist Max Maven recommended this book in one of his interviews. He said that although this book was written long ago, some of the methods were still used in these days. After I read this book, I have to say it is awesome, though some tricks were not really good. However, I picked a few tricks from the book and performed to my friends, they were all freaked out. Looking at their faces, I knew that I have bought the right book.

Journalist Scott Pelley crafts his book around a theme that arose from his reporting on the 2015 terrorist bombings in Paris: " Don't ask the meaning of life. Life is asking, what's the meaning of you?" In these essays, some brief, some long, Mr. Pelley sets out to explore our times through the people who have brought meaning to the global events he has reported on as a "60 Minutes" correspondent and CBS anchor and managing editor.For me, the most interesting chapter was "Gratitude: Early Lessons," about Mr. Pelley's own life and how he got started in journalism. I'm always up for a good story about a journalist's career, especially when it's set in the heyday of journalism, when teletype machines clattered away in the back of the newsroom, acrid fumes wafted out from under the darkroom door, and copy editors chewed up your stories and spit out something only vaguely resembling them.I also enjoyed the essays that indeed focused on people who had found meaning in their pursuits. Some are famous (Bruce Springsteen) while some are simply people going about their daily lives who have been stopped for a man-on-the-street interview. In the closing chapters, Mr. Pelley gives advice to writers and wannabe journalists that provides a window into his reporting methods. There are some great takeaways here.But a good number of the essays depart from the theme of meaningful lives. I didn't particularly care for the political essays -- how much redeeming meaning can be found there? I have no desire to revisit the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal or the Clinton/Trump election night. In these essays, Mr. Pelley relates the stories he's covered, which is the point of a journalist's memoir after all. But they don't really fit into the stated theme of the book, and sometimes the conclusions he comes to made me roll my eyes. In the Clinton/Trump essay, for example, he explains why Hillary Clinton turned down an on-air interview with Mr. Pelley shortly before the election. He hints that if she had agreed to the interview, over 13 million people would have watched it and she wouldn't have lost to Trump by 77,000 votes. Hmmmm.My other issue is the way Mr. Pelley begins the book with a 9/11 story. Yes, many people stepped up and did heroic things that day and in the aftermath of the attacks. So, this essay fits the theme of meaningful lives. But he relies on other people's reporting to tell the story. In the backmatter, Mr. Pelley credits the FDNY World Trade Center Task Force for the oral histories he rewrites in his essay. Mr. Pelley was in New York on 9/11 and he does include his impressions of the scene, but to me the essay felt like a heavy-handed attempt to pull the reader into the book by emotional manipulation. These sketches are not really Mr. Pelley's to tell. And no matter how many heroic stories came out of 9/11, I can't get past the fact of the tragedy itself. For me, the heroism doesn't outweigh the horror. May those innocent souls rest in peace.

These are well written stories. The author is obviously a very good writer, or what he might say, a very good rewriter. And the stories are good. Most all of them show some incredible people doing some incredible work. But the reason I gave it 3 stars is that a lot of the stories are stories we all think we know. And no, we don't know them must at all, but they were big headlines and a lot of the people are famous people and so we think we know them too and so for those two reasons, they just don't inspire me. That shouldn't be, but it is. That isn't the author's fault. It's just that cliche -- "familiarity breeds contempt" is true here I think. It shouldn't be, but it is. I did like the story of the pigeon being a possible sign when Pope Francis was picked. That seemed like was trying to find some meaning in the story. The subtitle messes up the book because it seems he is finding the heros. And maybe that is what he means by finding the meaning. He kind of alludes to this at the very end of the book. "With all our diversity, in all our languages and cultures, we should agree on one big idea -- each of us belongs, each of us contributes and each of us must be heard." I guess that could be the meaning he finds in his stories. But I think that statement would mean more if the book was filled with unknown people who the world would never say are important but are in fact important. Like maybe 9/11 could have been thought about by looking at a survivor of that horror today -- that survivor being a hero because she is thriving without her husband/son/etc. He kind of did this with the Sandy Hook story, but I just don't know. I don't know why this book missed the mark for me. Maybe it's me? But then again I am reading another book right now that is already touching me. It is written by an unknown person who writes about refugees who are unknown to the world (I'll write that review in a few days). There's nothing wrong with Scott's book. It is well written. And he obviously feels a great deal about his subjects. He's good at his job (oh, I loved the short story about Mick Jaeger -- that one was my favorite I think). And I got this book to be inspired. I just wasn't.

Scott Pelley is a wonderful writer.I've read many accounts of the attack on the Twin Towers, but he put me there (and I didn't want to be there) more vividly than any other author. I distinctly felt an overwhelming sense of hopelessness, loss, the insane waste of human life, and the total destruction of two majestic buildings. So powerful is his writing, I had to put the book down a couple of times, and that's coming from a guy who was in the thick of things as a soldier in Vietnam and as a city cop for 25 years.Get this book.Loren W. Scott Pelley is a gifted storyteller. These are all stories I know or have lived through, and it was nice to hear his interpretation and how he has made meaning of the events and experiences in his life as a journalist. There is definite bias in his writing - I agree with him, but if there are particular politicians you support you might disagree with his opinions or interpretations. I found the stories moving, especially when he discussed his experiences of being in NYC on 9/11, interviewing the parents and family members of those killed in Sandy Hook, and working with troops in war zones. I also felt like I was getting the insider view when he talked about interviewing candidates on the campaign trail, such as Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump. The most interesting chapter to me was the last chapter of a Letter to a Young Journalist that gives his views of freedom of the press and the role of journalism today. It is a nice, quick read that I really enjoyed.

I just received this book and have only had time to thumb through it, but I am so impressed with the structure, illustrations, robust information, and beauty of this book. The value far exceeds what the cost would imply. I know I will spend hours with this book and think it is a valuable nucleus to my home library, which weighs heavily towards history. It is just incredible!

Personal backstory:-I just purchased this for my homeschooling brother. I haven't, and likely won't read it, as I'm not a history person myself, but it is my brother's favorite subject. And of course, when you see the word "Smithsonian", you expect high quality and educational value. And maybe even information you can't find anywhere else.Pros:-I decided to write a review anyway, because the proportions and design alone, makes it worth the money. The cover is absolutely GORGEOUS. The cover picture, and title letters, as well as the spinal lettering and logos, are a glossy gold. Not brown, like you may interpret from the Amazon picture. And maybe this is due to the fact that I'm currently looking at it with mild sunlight shining through my window, but the picture doesn't do justice to just how beautiful this book really is. Like I said, SHINY, GOLD. Even if you're not a history person, this book will tempt you to explore what treasures lie inside.-You'll be the envy of any history lover who comes over-Would make a beautiful and sophisticated display piece.Cons (really just concerns):-Make sure you're getting this for an older kid (like 11+), who actually enjoys history, if not for an adult, or yourself. I leafed through a couple of pages, and they all seem packed with detail. Also, because of the size being almost 1 foot by 1 foot, and 440 pages long, this thing is BIG and heavy, and could possibly intimidate younger academics.I might have my brother review the content of the book, once he's read a fair amount.

I am a history buff, so when I saw the preorder for this, I got really excited. I also love maps. Finally, an up-to-date book that combines both aspects: history and maps. The maps are large and vivid without the book being too big. This is a great reference when reading different historical books. My only wish is that the maps had a mileage scale so distances could be easily judged. This book, in my opinion deserves all five stars. Well done everyone involved in the creation of this book!

The book is beautiful, full of information and is a pleasure to look at.However a book of maps should include for each map a north point if it makes sense, a scale, even an approximate one, and identification of the lines of latitude and longitude, 30 degrees, 50 degrees, whatever it is.That none of the maps in this book provide such basic information is a disgrace to cartography.

I bought this book as a gift for my 13yo son and am thrilled with it. So thrilled, in fact, that before wrapping it my husband and I both spent a couple days poring icee it while the kids were at school. Great way to learn history, drawn connections over time, and see not just snapshots in time, but trends and the natural geographic manner in which history takes place. The fact that it’s absolutely stunning as a book means that I won’t be bugging my son to put his books away, this one he can happily leave out in the family room for everyone to enjoy. Highly recommend.

A great compilation history. It’s going take me a long time to read and digest the content of this very large beautiful book.

I've only owned the book for a few minutes and I just went through the reviews written, just 5 so far and all mention how beautiful the book is. It is indeed a beautiful book. It is a large book as well but there is so much detail within the pages.This might be the book I am most proud of owning.

I've always loved finding older maps, seeing the different boarders and finding the history behind it, this book does all the work for you! A very thorough but not overly scholarly/dry run through the history of the civilized world, Its checking all the boxes! I'm like a kid in a candy shop! I've purchased 2 more copies to give as gifts because everyone deserves the splendor and awe that this book unfurls at your fingertips!
