This book could have been so much more. What an important and currently pressing topic Alex Kotlowitz chose to write about. The homicide and violent crime rate in Chicago is staggering. Kotlowitz says that in the past 20 years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and roughly 60,000 have been wounded by gunfire. The vast majority of the killings happen in a small space in Chicago--but the violence has been spreading out all over the city. National and regional papers report of the killings daily.I've read another book by Kotlowitz and have found him to be a very gifted writer. He's an artist with words. He has a very smooth writing style and uses words to paint pictures in a way that few others can. I know little about what's going on in Chicago, so I was excited to learn more--especially through the writing of Kotlowitz. But this book felt flat.During a summer in Chicago, Kotlowitz chronicles the life of African American male teenagers and some men past their prime previously involved in gang violence. In only a few months, we learn of many gruesome murders and lives ruined by the violence.Kotlowitz seems to blame the failures of his main characters on the society that they've grown up in. Even when adopted out and moved to the suburbs, Kotlowitz's characters return to a life of crime. It's almost, as if, the main characters in the book are destined to kill others. Robbing people seems to be in their blood and hurting others seems to be the fault of the character's lapse of judgment, society, or something else. But Kotlowitz doesn't seem to rest blame in the murderer or perpetrator himself. The murderer or perpetrator is portrayed as a victim and his family as victims too.By the way--why aren't women included as characters in this book? Do they not perpetrate the violent crime? If they don't, then why not?The book is entirely predictable. In fact, it's so predictable that it's absurd. We're meant to see that the murders in jail actually are good people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe that's true. I don't know. But it's hard to believe that every murderer followed in the book has a good heart and is rather blameless. I would have liked to know more about the character's upbringing, their experiences in school, and the rest of their life. Two paragraphs--or even two pages--about any of these topics doesn't suffice. The violence in Chicago results from complex matters and it would have been nice for Kotlowitz to consider and develop each of the potential causes for the high crime rate. Glossing over the lives of the main characters and their families doesn't serve the topic justice.Perhaps it's worthwhile to read a few chapters of this book. But if you want to learn more about what's going on in Chicago, I'd suggest reading another source.

Excellent book on the effects of violence in Chicago. Generally each chapter introduces us to a new person/family touched by violence (either losing a family member to violence or having a family member commit violence or committing violence themselves and trying to come to terms with what they've done) though there are a few people who have several chapters devoted to their stories (again dealing with violence that they've witnessed, experienced, or committed).Kotlowitz writes with powerful prose, really showing the humanity of these people and the very challenging lives they lead and often horrific experiences they, well, experiences. Some people might say Kotlowitz is making excuses for bad behavior, but I think he is really showing the societal factors that surround people. So many children randomly killed, so many children/young people killing or hurting others, so many petty squabbles escalating into death. Kotlowitz shows how people struggle with being defined or stereotyped as gangbangers or drug dealers--the assumptions mothers deal with when a child is killed that "he must have been in a gang or dealing drugs." Sometimes they were, sometimes not. Either way the person gone was still a person.Though some of the people profiled make it, there aren't many happy endings in the book. Some seem promising. Some are very sad. It just felt like a gut punch to me, reading about the things people live with and through. I can't imagine having the strength to endure. Just an excellent book. It would be hard to read this and still dismiss Chicago's violence as just faceless black on black crime (or whatever talking point it is today) that "those people" need to deal with (or as a justification to treat them all like animals and criminals.) These are people struggling with poverty, economic depression in their neighborhoods, mass incarceration, death, and still most manage to keep on living, despite the loss and sadness. I can't recommend it enough.

Difficult book to review because Alex Kotlowitz is an amazing reporter of urban life and he once again brings empathy and closeness to American cities...but I never quite connected with it. I have read "There Are No Children Here," and that's a classic of the type.Maybe it's empathy overload, or just being so depressed by it all, but I felt like this could have been a 20K magazine article and accomplished the same thing. Here, I just felt overwhelmed and sad. I put it aside and then didn't come back to it for days, and found myself skimming and forgetting where I was. So that's all the downside. The "up" is that these are powerful, meaningful stories of people in dire situations - and many of them made bad choices and don't deserve much sympathy. But, I can't help but feel shame and regret for how this country has let all this happen without ever coming up with even a tepid effort at a solution. This is a powerful book despite my personal disconnect.

The victims of crime aren't the only victims of "the system".In his years of documenting "inner city" Chicago, Alex Kotlowitz has met many people. Here he chronicles the summer of 2013 by ticking off the days, with an account of the life of one individual or family, mostly colored by their experiences with the criminal justice system and with gang culture.Although the events described are more than five years past, anyone without their own experience with poverty or helping those in poverty would do well to read "An American Summer". Life in the "inner city" can be toxic, and anyone who votes should be thinking about how our government often rewards prosecutors and others who punish some of the victims and how, if this treatment leads to hopelessness and recidivism, we're not even reducing crime as a result.

This is a sumptuous tome that will hold you all summer long, unless, like me, you can't put it down. They say there are no stories that haven't already been written, and King has once again proven that saying to be untrue. Hugely original, and for those who like King but get squeamish when he's at his very goriest (think Cujo), you should be okay here. Brilliant work from a highly under-rated writer.

I'm glad I saw the TV series before I read the book. I enjoyed the first two seasons; I could have done without the third. Still, although the TV series did convey the claustrophobic atmosphere of the Dome, the characters on the whole were much more likeable, and even "Big Jim" Rennie wasn't quite as villainous, although he was certainly no hero, either.King himself, in the Author's Note, admits there is quite a large cast of characters in the novel. It seemed to me he was trying to balance the bad characters with the good. Perhaps I am overly optimistic, but I believe that most people are basically good, and especially in a town the size of Chester's Mill, with a thousand or so people, it would be hard to come up with a police force of a couple dozen people who were willing to ignore their conscience and follow Rennie's orders. And I don't think Rennie could have fooled so many people into trusting him. At one point, Colonel Cox mentioned that Rennie had done things like charging interest rates up to 40%, having people pay for their car two or three times over, and the like. There had to be enough people in Chester's Mill who knew Rennie for what he was - a greedy, heartless moneygrubber - to prevent him from acquiring so much power.Another difference between the book and the TV series is Dale Barbara ("Barbie") spends almost three-fourths of the book in jail, whereas in the TV series he is one of the main characters and in almost every scene. Except for the few times Barbie is visited in jail, he is only active in the book in the very beginning and in the end, after his friends bust him out of jail.Just because I liked the TV series better, that doesn't mean I didn't like the book. I did, it's just that there were times when I got really tired of reading about mean, nasty people, or people who were drug addicts or alcoholics or otherwise had serious problems. Like, for instance, Junior's brain tumor which caused him to act on impulses which must have already been there but he managed to control them until the tumor started eating away at his brain.Speaking of which, even though the book for the most part didn't have the graphic violence of the TV series (I closed my eyes during the opening credits every time the Dome split the cow in half), there were plenty of descriptions of some pretty nasty stuff. Typical King, but somewhat restrained, for which I say a resounding "Thank you!"I was glad that King offered an explanation for the origin of the Dome in the book (no spoilers), something the TV series never really dealt with. It reminded me of several Twilight Zone episodes, however. So many books are written these days, it's hard to come up with truly original ideas. The Dome as something that is done to people, as opposed to something that is done for people (which I've read in other science fiction books) is original. And the book doesn't have the easy answers for problems caused by the Dome that the series did.Is the book worth reading? Definitely. But this is another case where I would advise watching the TV series first, before reading the book, simply because the series is more enjoyable - in my opinion. It appears most people categorize this as horror/supernatural fiction, because Stephen King is a horror writer. There are a few instances where there are occurrences which could be labeled supernatural: a dog hearing (and understanding) the voice of a dead person, for example. But considering the origin of the Dome and the detailed description of the effects of the explosion on the Dome, I would call this speculative fiction at the very least, if not science fiction.

Let me start by saying that I've been a King fan from the beginning. But, I strayed to Dean Koontz (a hellava storyteller!) when King got weird toward the end of the 90's. Duma Key made me hopeful, although it wasn't King at his best. It was almost like he had ran out of ideas and was stringing us along with the short stories and the novellas. I had given up until 11/22/63. And, let's face it folks... the "KING" had never ran out of ideas, he was just holding back! I was back in the saddle with 11/22/63 and everything else he has written since then and it's my opinion that his work has gotten so much better with age. I never fail to be amazed that his work can seize me with fear and hope and disgust and rapture ALL AT THE SAME TIME! So, how did I manage to miss Under the Dome until now? This book popped up in my recommendations. I must have been on the outs with the Big Kahuna or under a rock when it was released. Got it in the mail on Monday. Started it during my lunch hour on Tuesday. Finished it on Saturday. It's 1074 pages. That's 1074 pages of Stephen King, folks. I had to put my life into limbo to get to the end of this novel. Hear me when I say it spun my world into a state of suspension! My family had to eat cereal, the laundry piled up, and the bed barely got slept in. I basically only showered, droned through work and rushed home to get back to this book. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! It's The Stand meets Needful Things meets Tommyknockers meets Survivor. The basic concept is that an invisible force field claps down over a small New England town and seals them off from the rest of the world. But, throw in a megalomaniac and retired war-hero who begin trying to save the town in their own special way and what you get is King's magic. The characters you love become the characters you hate. What seems impossible becomes reality in the pages of the book and then the story begins to parallel with things that are happening in our real world. Then it's 3am and you're not sure who you hate in the book anymore because you see a little of yourself in the vilest villain King creates. But, you know one thing for sure... you can't put that book down because you're going to see where the next twist takes you!

For Pete's Sake, by Ellen Stoll Walsh

From Publishers Weekly

The sole alligator among three flamingos, Pete knows he is green, but he wants to be pink because "everyone else is." In one of this brief yet insightful tale's typically witty passages, his flamingo pals reassure him: "Don't worry.... You probably aren't ripe yet. It takes longer for some." Pete's cronies continue to comfort him when he disgruntledly observes that he has four rather than two feet ("You're lucky, Pete.... Two, and two extra") and that he doesn't have any feathers ("The best feathers take the longest to grow"). Finally he meets three fellow alligators or, as the text says, "flamingos who looked just like Pete"?and he proudly announces to his pink pals, "I'm different but the same." To which they respond, "Well for Pete's sake, Pete.... You always have been." Disappointingly, Walsh's (Jack's Tale) minimalist cut-paper collage art varies little in some sequences. Yet the narrative's inarguably sound messages, among them the superficiality of appearance and the importance of being a supportive friend, coupled with the lightness of the delivery, virtually guarantee that this read-aloud will spark worthwhile discussion. Ages 3-8. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-A gentle and amusing story about an alligator who believes himself to be a flamingo, despite all evidence to the contrary, and his total and unconditional acceptance by his flamingo friends. The notion that we do not need to be alike to enjoy one anothers' company is nicely expressed and beautifully illustrated by Walsh's collages that employ papers of gloriously varied textures. Simple enough for a three or four-year-old to grasp and attractive enough for adults to respond to, this picture book is an all-around winner.Miriam Lang Budin, Mt. I love reading this to my grandchildren. It is a great story with much teaching in it.

We read three books to our children every night. This book was by far the most amusing.

A wonderful little tale of being different and wanting to belong. Said with very few words with wonderful art, this book has what every parent requires from a good early reader. A easy well told story with a very clear and good message. From strangers to friends what it means to belong. great art.

This is a very good book that is small enough not to overwhelm a beginner. Also, it is ASL-based with a great explaination of how deaf think (samples of letters written by Deaf individuals are included). Many signs are out-dated, but most of the important ones are the same. You will need another book (or a deaf friend) to explain the signs for the countries listed, as the ones in the book are not used anymore. There are short lessons followed by practice work such as sentences, songs, and a Bible verse. You might need the help of a deaf friend to check your abilities on this. This book is a religious book written by a woman who desired to share the Gospel with her deaf child. If you aren't looking for religious sign, don't buy it. It does include many basic conversational words.I sign and used this book to teach my hearing children. Very good book!!

I just got the book and am studying it with earnestness. It's a great book and easy to follow. I bought a used copy and it came with some great notes from the previous owner. The book is written by a Christian camp counselor and contains many Christian references which will be very helpful. It's a really good book to start your studies with sign language.

These are excellent books for beginners. I purchased several for teaching young girls in my church how to sign the words to the music being sung. They did an excellent job.

Dr. Cathy Rice is very good at teaching all of the signs needed to communicate and witness to others about Christ. It's very clear and easy to understand and she's quite humorous. My two teenage boys have learned all of the signs in the book.

Excellent resource to continue my studies of ASL

I like this book and have learned many things from it. It does have a Christian viewpoint and that's mentioned throughout the book, so if that is something that would bother you you'd probably be better off with something else.

Good books. Great to have the pictures and explanations. Easy to understand and put into practice.

Great starter for those who desire to learn sign language. Easy read material. Get a partner and get started. Learn at your own pace. I've always though that signing was a beautiful work of Art!

We all know how difficult it can be to get a teen to do a thorough review of materials for anything. Learning to drive is too important to take it lightly, as the author points out in book. This book does a great job of boiling down the 100+ Page NY State Drivers Manual to it's key elements. It does not skip anything important but condenses the often boring government type writing into key points that help keep the young driver focused on what is important. This is a must have tool for parents to share with children entering the world of driving.

This book is very educational..highly recommend

AMAZING, HELPED ME ACE MY TEST- RN

Great reminder of things we forget being every day drivers, and lots of new tips that keep up with the current technology age. Well worth the read!

Great book! Michael R

This book had my brain waves jigglinnnnn ;)-Christian Davis

Once again Hank has written a clear concise book for new drivers. This book gives the reader an understanding of the rules and laws to attain a Driver’s License. Not only will this book help the reader in passing their Driver’s License test, it will help make them a better and safer driver. I highly recommend that if you know anyone that is about to start driving, that you purchase this series of books for them.

This book is very informative! Definitely recommend.
