What an amazing book! It is so easy for the child to interact with the story in finding the poop under the flap. My grandson could hardly wait until we turned the page to find the next poop. The illustrations are vivid and bright and the animals are easy to recognize. The dialog between the parents and the children is really, really good and the child grasps the idea that it's okay for Mom and Dad to ask about pooping.This is one book that every child should have in their own personal library. I'm glad I bought it for my 2 year old grandson!

I have never written an online review in my life but I cannot go another day without acknowledging the miracle that is THIS, THE MAGICAL UNICORN OF ALL POOP BOOKS. By far my best purchase of 2018, possibly in all of parenthood. My almost 3-year-old had struggled to successfully poop on the toilet for 9 fantastic months (so. much. laundry.). We'd tried EVERYTHING. Elsa underwear, stickers, relaxing music, candy, miralax, iPad on the potty, naked time, more candy, promising her a fish, promising her Disneyland(!?) - weak parent moment. But NOTHING could get this girl to poop on the potty, resulting in numberless treasure hunts to find the hidden turds throughout the house. Then, in one of those desperate maternal late-night google rampages (How to force kid to poop on potty), I purchased this book. And LO AND FREAKING BEHOLD. The very next day after we read this book together she pooped. On her own. IN THE BLESSED TOILET. And she has done so every single day since. THANK YOU JULIE MARKES you are my hero. This is now our most prized family heirloom and will probably be going with her to college in 15 years.

I'm not going to lie, I bought this book without high expectations of results. I have a 2 1/2 year old son who is potty training. He refused to go poop on a potty chair, instead he would hold it in until we left him to go to sleep at night, then would go in his pull up. It was getting so frustrating, so I ordered this book. He was so excited that it was his own special book and it was about poop. So, I made him a deal, I would read it to him, but he would have to sit on the potty chair and poop while I read it. Not even kidding, he pooped on the first day and hasn't gone back since. Of course, I have to have patience and read the book slowly and let him lift all the flaps and talk about all the pictures, but he loves this book and he's pooping on a toilet, so I really have no complaints.

This book has been an AMAZING tool in my 24 mo. old's potty training "tool box". We got it for him the week before we started potty training and started to read it ahead of out "Potty Party." He loves it and a week later still wants us to read it to him at least 3 times a day. When I ordered it, I did not realize this was a book with flaps to lift. My toddler thinks flap & pop-up books are the best, so the flaps were a great surprise. Also, the pages of the book are very thick and sturdy, which is great with a heavy handed toddler. It is not a board book, but the pages are very heavy stock and would be difficult to tear. The story line is great too, progressing from cute animal families to a human family, showing the kids and how/where they poop. The animal families include BOTH mommy and daddy animals. I thought this was nice, as I find most books are heavy on a mom influence, with little mention of dads. Overall,this is a truly wonderful book!

My son loved reading this while learning how to potty train. It was a great introduction into this life long skill. Each page has multiple flip-ups to help keep my child engaged and interacting with the story. He loved how each page had a parent and a few things to throw him off of finding the poop. The last page we both found hilarious and adorable. The author took a topic that is not usually talked about and made it cute, fun, engaging, and easy to talk about. Everyone does it and this book also helped talk about science like animals, habitats, and the digestive system. The book isn't long either. He liked reading it while using the restroom or right before bed. The drawings are vibrant and adorable, really showcasing the animals in their environments. The only draw back is if your child isn't ready for flip-up tabs then you have to watch them very closely. My son pulled about five off before I caught him in the act. Also, the pages or a little thicker than regular pages but not hard like a board book. We really enjoyed this book and all it had to offer.

This may be a good book for for a child about to potty train. However, I bought this for my daughter who is having withholding problems. This isn't a book to help with that. She likes the pictures and the flaps and we cheer when we find the poop, but it isn't helping me in any way.

We have been struggling to get our 3 year son to poop on the potty. He has only gone poop once on the potty since we have actively been trying (about 1 month). So I decided to order a "poop" book. We got the book this afternoon during his nap, shortly after his nap he pooped in his underwear. So we sat down and put his poop in the toilet like we usually do so he knows where the poop belongs. We also sat down and read this book, Where's the Poop? He then sat down and "read" his book and looked at the pictures. Our son is typically a once a day pooper, but this evening he came running in the room saying "potty" he then proceeded to take his underwear off and sit on the potty and poop!!! He did this unprompted. He went from 0 to 60 in less than a day. I honestly think it stems from reading this book.

For anyone else, Where the Wild Things Bite would be a four star book, but Molly Harper is one of my favorite authors, and she just didn't quite pull this one off with her usual skill. As much as it pains my heart, and without spoilers, here's what went wrong.We spend a whole lot of time in the h's head, so much so that the H doesn't really get fleshed out and their attraction doesn't quite seem possible.A pretty serious plot point involving prescription drugs is brought up twice then glossed over. Let's say the person involved would have been sick, possibly incapacitated, but Ms. Harper just tossed that aside. Probably best not to bring it up.Timeline issues. For instance, the h eating something, then not having eaten, then saying she was full.Believability issues. I'm willing to read about almost anything as long as you make it believable. I did not believe the h could have survived much of what she goes through, which makes me go, "Huh?" which takes me out of the story.Then there is a big plot point, a very serious one, and it weirdly doesn't get addressed in any realistic way. It's just shrugged off as, "oh well, yeah that was pretty bad, har har." Wth?While I enjoyed Wild Things, it didn't pull well together to find that "extremely wacky yet still possible" tone of her other books. Even so, I quite liked these characters and hope to see them in a future story.Conclusion? A bit of a miss for Ms. Harper who can do, and usually does, much better. But Molly Harper books are like pizza: even when they're not great they're still pretty darn good.

Anna is sort of a hermit that lives for her job surrounded by old books, until a very valuable one comes to her and Anna believes it is her duty to give it back by hand to its rightful owner and not by courier. So even though she is an agoraphobe, germophobe and a lot more adjectives that end in "phobe", she bravely gets on a plane to Half-Moon Hollow to deliver that precious book to Jane Jameson. And then her plane crashes.I could not put this book down, but I am afraid I was expecting more - probably because whole idea of having a germophobe lost in the woods promised a lot of laugh out moments, but failed short. They basically walked and slept, where were the savage animals, the lost tribes, eating disgusting things, hazardous survival ideas, meeting amazons,...? All those absolutely ridiculous but perfectly plausible scenes to this sort of book? I enjoyed the story, I liked how the main character is so like Jane but also very different, how she grows and fights but I was left wanting more.

If you may have recalled in The Single Undead Moms Club I wanted badly to stab Finn with a fork. I disliked him greatly. But in WTWTB Finn redeems himself..... Kinda. I mean I guess he does. Or does he? Anna is great. I love her knowledge of so many random facts about surviving in the wilderness. She is one tough cookie and she puts up with Finn. I hope that we will see more of Anna & Finn in future stories. I can’t wait to see what/who is next in Half-Moon Hollow.As always I let the amazingly talented Amanda Ronconi read this story to me. I absolutely love Amanda ability to bringing Molly’s characters to life for me. And it is always fun when you are in the car and you are laughing so hard that the people next to you look at you like your are crazy. I absolutely loved this book! cannot wait for the second one. Molly Harper has a HUGE knack for story telling and i own every one of her books. in this story, Nell (the main character) comes alive in a short story with the Jane Yellowrock series but is expanded here. She has a very small part in "Off the Grid" in the Jane Yellowrock series but this story is all hers! She lives alone in a cabin, takes care of herself and even gains a power she did not know she had. I highly recommend this story to all women and to those who want to empower their daughters. Even to men who think that women cannot be as strong as they are.

I adore Molly Harper and Half Moon Hollow!! I did miss a few of the series regulars in this book, but Finn and Anna made the story great! I did feel that there were a few issues with continuity, especially in the last quarter of the book, but it was easy enough to figure out what was going on.As I've come to expect from Ms Harper, this book was filled with action and humor. I'd recommend this book to any fan of PNR books. I'd normally warn that you need to read the whole series, though I always recommend that, but I feel you could read this installment of the series without feeling lost. There are small references to the earlier books, but nothing that would keep you from enjoying this one!!

I really enjoyed the main characters in this book. It is set in the same world as Molly's other HMH books, but the characters are mostly on their own through the book, so you don't necessarily need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. Anna is much stronger than she thinks she is at the beginning and I really enjoyed seeing how she grows, but Finn also grows up a bit. There is one completely terrifying scene in it, or at least I think so as a PhD student, but most of it is fun and Molly's usual combination of sassy, hilarious and a bit sexy. Can't say enough good things about the book or the author.

Brilliant, scathing, heartbreaking and raw. This is the most powerfully honest book on depression and child abuse that I have ever read. Merkin's bereft childhood of brutality and lack seems to be the fertile ground that created her despondency and the tenacious, pervasive longing for suicide. Her parents appear blatantly psychologically disordered, meting out damage as casually as one would order lunch. Merkin is by turns, attached to, and repelled by, a vicious mother, who seems both stunningly narcissistic and psychopathic. I was frustrated by Merkin's struggle to detach from her mother, much in the same way that abused wives return to their abusers, expecting different outcomes. Merkin was drowning in depression, yet repeatedly returned to her parents seeking solace, approval and a revisionist history that neither parent was emotionally equipped to provide. The repeated returns to the abusive environment only seemed to exacerbate the depression and parental control, all in a continuous self-perpetuating loop. I rooted for Merkin to cut the toxic ties in favor of mental health and self actualization, but her journey to contentment was more circuitous. I applaud Merkin's ability to craft riveting and beautiful prose from the wreckage and horror of her early years. This book is both difficult to read at times, and equally hard to put down. My hope is that Merkin never chooses to succumb to the lure of suicide, but instead continues to write, to enjoy simple pleasures and allows herself to heal. A highly recommended read.

I quite loved Merkin's literary asides, I am a reader as well. This book definely brought me into depression, a mood disorder I don't happen to have but the writing here is somehow contagious. I didn't mind that terrible feeling as it lifted when I finished the book. Merkin's strength here is showing in blazingly purposeful detail: The parents, the other kids, and her childhood. If one image stands out for me it is of her Jewish mother drawing Nazi imagery on her arms. I mean, these parents should have been fined, in my honest opinion. My confusion lies in how do the author become happier? Was it the pain pills she mentions. Or the small home on Long Island that she rents, or was it having the energy to have friends visit? Her daughter's love? Her love for her daughter? I am sure all those helped but the leap from abject misery to 'close to happy' wasn't clear to me and so must affect many depressives looking for concrete answers. Merkins writes so well but what she left out is telling. 4 big stars

I read this while severely depressed and found it helpful. This isn't the point of the book—it's a beautifully-written, insightful, firsthand account of someone's lifelong struggle with depression—but as I imagine a large number of people who pick up this book will, like me, be looking for some insight into their own situation, I'll say that I, for one, found some. I, like Daphne, sometimes struggle to accept depression as an illness as opposed to a personal failing, even as I live it, and reading someone else's honest account—experiencing empathy and finding many shared experiences along the way—encouraged me to be a bit kinder to myself.

I'm not quite sure what the author was trying to do as the text jumped between battling depression and her unhappy childhood without getting to a point. I'm not sure there is a there there to this story or why this author's story was chosen.

I purchased this book because I was in a deep clinical depression - a battle I - like the author - have fought since childhood. Reading how others - especially fellow authors - manage their depression is usually insightful and helpful to me.Sadly, this book did nothing to help me to cope with my bout with depression. In fact, it just made it worse, exacerbated by the fact that I had wasted money on this book. Like the other one-star reviewers, I needed to skip ahead - a LOT.Merkin's style of writing might be okay for a New Yorker article. But slogging through nearly 300 pages about emotions written in a journalistic style is too much for this reader. And the psychiatrists Merkin saw certainly did not help her to put her childhood behind her. Sixtysomething is way to old to still be blaming one's parents.

This memoir is the most moving, brave and brilliant book I have ever read about depression. Heartbreaking and harrowing, THIS CLOSE TO HAPPY, A Reckoning with Depression is, remarkably, empty of any bitterness. There are moments of aching tenderness: climbing on her mother's lap as she (her mother) sang in a beautiful voice to the children on the one night a week she put them to bed; waiting by the elevator for her mother to visit at the hospital; an impossible longing for mother love. Daphne Merkin dazzles with her intelligence, wry humor and honesty. A hugely important book for anyone who knows the pain of depression, described with great precision and understanding, or who has a friend of family member going through the hell of depression.

It was riveting and disturbing and beautifully written. I felt very close to her and then a little impatient and wanted to fix her and give her some suggestions, like quit already with the Freudian analysis and try some cognitive techniques.But then I'm worried about her and not objectively observing her writing. Definitely pulled me in, argued wit her that my mother was worse. I would have liked to get closer in to her mind set when she was in the depths of depression,,what sort of thoughts, and I thought she left that kind of vague.Beautiful book, had to be so hard to write, but rewarding.

One of the three best personal descriptions of serious mood disorders for the lay public and professionals (Styron's "Darkness Visible", and K. Redfield-Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind" are the others). A must read for those who suffer from severe depression, or bipolar disorder, their friends, family, and mental health professionals who treat them.

As a great admirer of Bettany Hughes video documentaries, I was excited to finally take a go at one of her books about one of my most favorite cities in the world that I am obsessed with- Istanbul. Being that this book wasn't being released in the USA till September, I was delighted to find a seller in Ireland that would ship to me. Ms Hughes, the writer does not disappoint, her writing is easy but covers a wealth of information concerning one of the worlds greatest cities. This is not a light read, the book is massive but well worth it- you can't cram 2000 years of history of such a dynamic city in 200 pages. Again, she is able to bring history to life, but in a style this is not dense and academic. I highly recommend for history buffs, readers that want to know more about how current events came to be.

Man, Bettany Hughes' books are always such a treat! You always know when you crack open the cover and dive into those 700 pages that you're not going to get straight history. Rather, you get a poetic description rich with content and...well...something that's not simple, linear history.Many great (and terrible) history books are all written in a similar, familiar style. They provide a connect-the-dots presentation of the content: books that are engaging and informative. At their best, they transport you into the past to really feel the culture and issues of that bygone era.Bettany Hughes new book, "Istanbul," (just like her previous two books) approaches history differently. It's complex--almost mythical, but always rooted in her extensive personal research and the most recent scholarship.Hughes uses beautiful prose to interweave past and present. She'll put you in a specific place--some little back alley of Istanbul... or anyplace!--and within a few sentences dazzle you with descriptions from antiquity and present of that one place. Past and present merge. Eras crash together. All history seems to synthesize. You feel it all at once. This isn't straight, linear history... it's mystical, visceral history!Reading "Istanbul" is a bit like being a geologist studying the layers of rock on a cliff face. There it all is, past and present together, piled in artful layers. You get a sense of both history and timelessness.That's not to say there's no linear, historical development in this book. There certainly is a good, old fashioned connect-the-dots, cause-and-effect telling of Istanbul's biography here. Hughes spends 700 pages walking us from antiquity to modernity. But if you pick up this book, open it to any chapter, read it, and you'll find a confluence of many historical streams flowing into that one moment and place.Reading this book is a joy in the same way "Helen of Troy" and "Hemlock Cup" were. God, I love Bettany Hughes' books! I bought both this book and her last one the day they arrived in the store. So, September 12, 2017 was a special day for me when this one hit the shelves. Reading her books can take you on quite a trip. They are a drug I quite enjoy!

This is a good book, but several comments can be made regarding its contents. The first section beginninhg with Byzantione and ending with the decline of the Byzantine Empire with the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmet II in 1453 is very detailed. Within this section I know the destruction of Old Rome, the establishment of New Rome and of the Byzantine Empire. I know in detail the 4th crusade by the Venetians in 1204 whose aim was Jerusalem, but who were so surprised by the beauty of Constantinople that they stayed there, destroyed it and returned to Venice with a variety of art works which today can be observed in Venice. The section is good in describing the discoveries the excavations have made during the construction of the tunnels in Istanbul. My comments refer to the Ottoman section of the book. Early in this section the book emphasizes the role of royal women praising them being the ones whose behavior in bath houses brought the renaissance by playing some role in the palace and/or requiring the construction of mosques. This is not renaissance. Subsequently it returns at length to their behavior in the harem, the way their dress, expresses in detail their behavior in bath houses, inviting guests there, including Lady Montagu and other European visitors. But with respect to events, especially with respect to battles between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, I find it explaining in detail those won by Europe, but mentioning extremely simply those in which Ottomans are defeated. For example, as the first siege of Vienna is concerned it is simply stated that the Ottomans had arrived to the walls of the city, but Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent withdraws due to inclement weather. However, the third siege of Vienna in 1683 by Sultan Mehmet IV occupies a whole chapter, even mentions the decapitation off the Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha who was the commander. Well, it was a successful event for the West. Also the sea battle of Lepanto in 1571, which is a defeat for the Ottomans, is analyzed in detail including the beheading of its commander Muezzinzade Ali Pasha. The Janissary corps is treated very lightly. There is no mention of the gradual decline of their organization after the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, becoming a state in a state, changing viziers as well as killing them, dethroning and killing sultans, even raping them, appointing new ones , and becoming very powerful. Finally Sultan Abdulmecid I eliminates them in 1826. The author mentions their elimination in the list at the end of the book. My most important comment is the slight emphasis on the real renaissance during the reign of Sultan Ahmet III, which unfortunately lasted a short time. The author describes in detail the conquest and the development of the city thereafter with the Sultan Mehmet II increasing its population by bringing in migrants from different areas and undertaking new constructions in the city. The author refers to the successful achievements of the sultan also as renaissance, which it is not. The real renaissance occurred during the reign of Sultan Ahmet III together with his Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha, but lasted unfortunately a short time. The author gives slight emphasis to this real renaissance.As Turkish history books do, the author also refers to this period as the Tulip Age. But in the Ottoman Empire the love for tulip is nothing new. Even before the reign of Sultan Ahmet III tulip was a favored flower. Moreover, the word lale (tulip) and Allah (God), when written in Arabic letters contain the same letters. Sultan Selim I had brought 50,000 bulbs from Aleppo; Sultan Murad III 300,000 bulbs from Crimea to plant in the gardens of the palace. According to Evliya Celebi there occurred a tulip market in Istanbul. But the age is not a Tulip Age. It is an Age that began with the activities of Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha and became the beginning of art, poetry, music, science and westernization, and the first -- and I insist the first -- and the last renaissance period. The great orientalist Bernard Lewis is of the same opinion. The changes it brought could not spread to the entire country; they occurred in Istanbul and to a certain extent in Konya and Nevsehir. A book is required to describe the developments that took place during this period. It was a period when liberal arts and thoughts developed, it was the beginning of an enlightenment in the fields of science, architecture, painting, miniature, music and poetry. For this purpose a movement towards the West occurred. Ibrahim Pasha succeeded in achieving only a part of what needed to be done. But because of the conditions of the society in which he lived it ended in 1730 with the rebellion led by the yeniceri Patrona Halil, as the author indicates in the list at the end of the book. This section should have been given more than its rightful due than the behavior of women described in several chapters.

It is a very interesting book filled with an enormous amount of information. Because of this amount, the quantity exceeds the quality, i.e. a story gives way to a data. It feels like a layer upon a layer of information. On the one hand, it is hard to stop reading but on the other, it is like gathering more and more of dates, names, and events without much of analysis. The language is difficult at times; you need to reread sentense a few times. A titanic job on the part of the author while gathering and systematizing such a wealth of information.

Erudite, astonishing in the plethora of historicaldetail, (big and small,) Ms Hughes tape version (20 discs!) A Tale of 3 Cities: ISTANBUL seduced me into purchasing the book. She's a brilliant historian and captivating writer/ speaker. I wishthis published treasure was available to me when residing in Bebek, Istanbul in the 80's......Dianna Unver

I always enjoy reading good new poets. This anthology definitely had a few of those. I hadn't heard of any of the poets, but I bet I hear more of one or two of them.

Book came in very sketchy packaging (was surprised that the books didn't fall out during shipping!) but overall product is basically brand-new! Would buy again.

Not a particularly exciting read.

This is a mixed bag. Some great stuff, some meh... It's a good place to find new, young poets and to get a sense of what's happening with young poets today

A beautiful, diverse collection, expertly curated.

Not what I wanted, lots of profanity, there are millions of words in English language - no need to use some of the words in this book. Yes we know these words I choose not to use them.
