Best meal plan book I own & and I have about 10! My acupuncturist recommended this as a way for me to reduce my calories but still be balanced with my nutritional intake. I'm not diabetic, but I am tired of all the diets out there that say it's a life plan. This book is the life plan book!! Interesting meals - some take longer to prepare than others - but there are so many quick meals too. Some foods are eliminated (junk food, processed), but otherwise, the variety is astounding. I lost 6 pounds my first week & that was with a little extra on my plate! I feel terrific & just need to focus on my discipline. Totally recommend this book for everyone - diabetic or not.

I have struggled to come up with an interesting, varied menu plan for myself. Here's the solution to that problem. This is a great resource for anyone, not just diabetes patients, trying to follow a balanced, calorie controlled eating plan. There are over a hundred suggestions each for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks, plus a selection of menus for special occasion meals (such as holidays, family gatherings, and picnics). Each entry gives the complete menu for that meal plus any needed recipe right with the entry. In addition each entry gives basic nutrition information (calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates,fiber, etc.).The menus are based on a 1500 calorie daily goal, but there is an easy to follow chart showing how to adapt the plan to 1200, 1800, and 2100 daily goals. There are also brief introductory sections discussing how the menus work, suggestions for eating out, and other useful topics.Pros:Easy to useGreat varietySimple to follow recipesGood index based on main ingredientsReliable informationManageable sizeCons:Most recipes are for more than 1 serving, typically 4 or more. Not all are useful as leftovers.If your main method for controlling your blood glucose is counting carbs, you'll have to do a little extra work. Carbs are listed for each menu, not for each item on the menu.Not everyone agrees with the low fat, moderate protein approach this book takes. If you have found more success strictly limiting carbs this book will be less helpful to you.I highly recommend this to anyone seeking help planning interesting and varied menus that control calories.

The meals are separated into breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. I can mix and match as each meal is consistent in nutrients. This is not an exotic, culinary masterpiece, but down-to-earth everyday meal planning and cooking for those of us who do not have access to gourmet grocery stores or even large metropolitan grocery stores for ingredients. Each time I use one of the meals/recipes I also figure the Weight Watcher points. I highly recommend this book for those who are "ordinary" meal planners and cooks and have someone in the family who is prediabetic or diabetic.

Pretty disappointing book given that it is from the ADA. Meals based on 1200 calories days. As a newly diagnosed diabetic I am restricted to 45 carbs. Too many of the meals have way more than that. Good information on how to adjust for higher calorie plans but if a 1200 calorie plan is already at 50 plus carbs per meal, the book is useless. Very disappointing.

This is a wonderful book which helps me plan my meals and snacks. As I started my diabetic, constant carbohydrate diet I was thoroughly absent of ideas on planning diabetic meals over a long period of time, but this book was just what I needed.

I am a Type 2 diabetic trying to get off oral meds and reactionary and long-lasting insulin. I have conquered the reactionary insulin issues by just cutting out bread, reduced my L/L insulin from 60 units to 40 units each night, and lost 22 pounds in the process. My A1c is consistently 5.5, (that of a non-diabetic), down from a high of 8.5.This book will allow me to tailor all meals so I can reach my goal of zero insulin, and possibly reduce oral meds. I also hope to save the approximately $3,000 cost of insulin and meds per year.UPDATE 6/2/14: Down 31 pounds and down to 20 units of Lantus... heading to zero insulin.

After my mom recently being diagnosed diabetic I searched the book stores and public library for an easy to read, information and not to overwhelming book that offers tons of examples for those new to counting carbs and adjusting to a new lifestyle without feeling like it's life sentence of boring food and fear of what to eat and not to eat. I also suggest Gretchen Beckers Book The first year, type two diabetes, great and packed with lots of info.... needless to say after doing the research I purchased this book from amazon and it has been a great help.

A very good cookbook recommended to me by my nutritionist! Loved just the first few pages so much I felt it was worth it. It took me a long time to buy the book but when I read it I slapped myself. Great for low fat, low carb, heart healthy or even pre-bariatric dieters, or anyone who needs a low prep but doesn't mind a higher prep meal with simpler ingredients and wants to be healthy.
