Benson, who has written seriously about comics for decades, aims to change that situation with this book on the romance titles published by St. John from 1947 to 1958, which were consistently better than their competitors. Their quality was a function of talented writers, artists, and editors, many of whom Benson interviewed, unfortunately not including key writer Dana Dutch, whose character-oriented stories downplayed glamour and moralizing in favor of verisimilitude and happy endings and set the approach for St. John's other scripters. Insightful critiques and a brief biography of company founder Archer St. John round out the volume. The pages reproduced from St. John's titles whet the desire to read the complete stories, which, fortunately, are available in a companion anthology, Romance without Tears (2003). Although this work's usefulness would be greater had Benson provided more context showing St. John's standing in the comics industry, it still offers invaluable guidance on a significant cultural phenomenon. Romance comics are a neglected subfield of comic collecting. When modern comic collecting began in the 1960s, the focus was largely on super hero comics -- particularly Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and the other Marvel comics. There were also a significant number of Disney collectors -- with interest centered on the Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics written and drawn by Carl Barks. Smaller numbers of collectors were interested in Westerns or 1950s horror and science fiction comics. Almost nobody, though, collected romance comics.The neglect of romance books in those days is unfortunate because if collectors had been interested, they could have preserved more copies of these books and they might have been able to interview some of the publishers, writers, and artists who have since passed away.John Benson has helped remedy the lack of information on one particularly important publisher: Archer St. John. St. John had the great good fortune to employ Dana Dutch, who was probably the best writer of romance stores, and Matt Baker, who was certainly the finest romance artist -- and, for my money, the finest comic book artist who ever lived. Unfortunately, by the time Benson began working on this book in the 1980s, St. John and Baker had passed away and Dutch couldn't be located, if he was still alive at the time. Still, Benson was able to locate other people who worked for St. John and was able to gather important information about the company.This book is a quick read, at only 112 pages. It has many nicely reproduced black and white illustrations. The book's only drawback, to my mind, is that the structure seems backwards. After a brief two-page introduction, Benson reproduces interviews he conducted with 10 people connected with St. John. He finishes the book with three brief commentaries on aspects of St. John's romance books, a brief history of St. John's romance comics. and a checklist of all St. John's comics. I think he should have reversed the order, putting the overview material first and the interviews at the end. As it was, there were references made in the interviews that were unclear until after I had read the material at the end of the book. This is quibbling, though, because Benson has done fans a real service by bringing this material together and getting it into print.Anyone interested in this book, may also want to consider Michele Nolan, Romance without Tears and Jim Amish, et al., Matt Baker: The Art of Glamour.

A detailed supplement to Benson ' s large collection of St. John's romance comics, which suffers only from the cheap, pamphlet - styling of the book.Unfortunately, Amazon cannot vet its sellers better, since this book was sold as being in better condition than it turned out to be, a beat up library copy that unfortunately was only worth the heavily discounted price and not a penny more.

Gave this as a gift to a skating student - it is a bit dense, and as a teen she probably won't read it all, but maybe she will look through it once and again to take in a little tid-bit. Very interesting.

This book is good. I love all figure skating books, so I give it a high rating. I've seen some books that have more depth in photos or biography or history, but this one isn't bad.

This book has all the information you could ever want about the history of figure skating.Very nice book.

This book will go over the heads of most skating fans and the author admits it. He even says that most books about figure skating fall into the category of "juvenile literature" because that's who's interested in them.That said, it's a wonderful history of the sport - back to caveman days! - and goes into the story of things many people don't know about now, like school figures, or bat an eye at, like non-white skaters. The photos at the back are fascinating to look at because of the changes in clothing styles and the sport's transition from winter-only to year-round in the 1960s. There is also a chapter on skating teams, including foursomes, a phenomenon almost unique to Canadian skaters, with a bizarre picture of two men and two women doing a simultaneous death spiral. It looked, um, kinda kinky. The section on adult skating - competitive or not - was fun to read as well. Its participants range from late teens to seniors.Little is said about scandals other than the infamous Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan thing, but the AIDS epidemic's impact on male skaters, a huge percentage of whom are gay, is hinted at simply because of the large number of men who died too young in the 1980s and 1990s. There is also a section on the plane crash that killed the entire 1961 U.S. skating team, their coaches, and some of their relatives, and led to the cancellation of that year's world championships and destroyed America's lead in this sport for many years afterwards.I found it was not a book that I could just sit down and read, other than the chapters in the front, but rather looked things up in the index and went from there.Enjoy!

This was ... pretty good ... but kinda like the little girl with the little curl. Where it's good it's really interesting. Where it's bad it just ... dull. Some sections the author goes into a lot of detail about skaters and events. Other sections read rather like a biblical geneology. "Jane Jones won in 1936 and Sue Smith won in 1937 and Mary Martin won in 1938 and 1939." Tell us MORE about Jane and Sue and Mary. What were their performances like? Who was the competition?Skaters who were neither world nor olympic champions, even if their stories are interesting and they've made a major impact (i.e., Paul Wylie) barely rate a mention.Many of the photos are posed shots rather than action photos, making it hard to picture what the events might have been like.I did find it very interesting to read about synchronized skating and adult skating. (Having a friend who is involved in both, but knowing little about it, it was very enlightening.)

Just over half through and I've laughed more than any book since...who knows, everyone writes dark these days. So the premise is outlandish: Space Force has been 'unfunded' and as the last space jockeys are kicked to the curb, earth is attacked by aliens with a penchant for gaming. It doesn't matter to me how it ends, or whether the male/female leads find each other, or that I had to suspend disbelief (yada,yada,yada)--that really isn't the point. From the pink hat parade (won't use the actual reference for fear Amazon will nix my review) to an SS bathroom break, the author pokes fun of everyone. The difference between this book and so darn much else, is that the novel is actually funny. Belly laugh funny. Anyone who doesn't give this novel five star has lost their ability to see the humor all around us. I think Space Force is a contemporary classic in the vein of Catch 22. Oh, one last honorable mention: the choate monster was perfect and a welcome change from Robinson's giant creatures--although, I'm not done yet so there's still time. My only criticism: the voice of the male/female leads sounded the same. I kept getting them confused. Since they were equally funny, I've overlooked that characterization mishmash. Thanks for the fun Jeremy Robinson!

I didn't know what to expect. Began reading as I cooked dinner and didn't stop until finished. Highly entertaining! Very good story.The premise is interesting. I trust Robinson to take me toward new ideas and to deliver an entertaining, smart story. He delivers this with a humor that had me laughing to the end.The entire book pokes fun at everyone. He even pokes fun at himself. I'm sure someone who reads it will be offended.Very, very well written story. Give it a try.

I’m a HUGE Jeremy Robinson fan and I thought I knew what to expect. WRONG! Totally different style and topic and forced me to explore a world I had no idea even existed. Pretty funny! An enjoyable ride and super fun!

Since then I have read about 15 of his creation with Space Force being my latest.Rarely do I actually laugh out loud while reading but this book repeatedly smacked me silly. His outstanding blend of characters and understanding of the science behind his concepts keeps me turning pages as fast as I can. I loved this diversion and have already started another (Apocalypse Machine) and will probably end up reading everything he has done. Not once have I been disappointed in the stories he's woven nor do I expect to be.Thank you for sharing your incredible imagination with us.

If you're looking for a humorous tale with plenty of jokes and social commentary then this book is for you!Narration was superb though the female narrators were a bit on the quiet side, perhaps a post-processing issue? I found myself playing volume tag depending on the narrator. I felt like all narrators performance were well paced with great character variety and energy.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

If you enjoyed Jon Hudson from the Nemesis books, you’ll love this. If you like space, aliens, and laughing, then you’ll love this book. If you don’t like any of those three things, read it anyway :)

This book was not what I expected. It was so much better. I absolutely love Jeremy Robinson's sense of humor. Space Force was hilarious, well timed, impressively creative and...gross. I sacrifice hours of sleep to curl up with his books every night...you will not regret reading this.

As well as editing the translation of Livy’s The War with Hannibal she translated Livy’s Rome and Italy, Pliny’s Letters, The Letters of Abelard and Heloise and Erasmus’s Praise of Folly, and also wrote the introduction to Horace’s Complete Odes and Epodes, all for Penguin Classics. This is a review of this Kindle edition of "In Praise of Folly". It is not a review of Erasmus' work, except indirectly. I bought this version from Amazon and have read it through.Short version: this Kindle edition is probably worth 99 cents, but don't expect too much.1. It is an unaltered "reprint" in digital form of the 1876 London edition by Reeves & Turner and includes the charming woodcut illustrations.2. The translation (unattributed) is a version of Kennett's 1683 translation, which was updated in the 18th century and often reprinted without attribution, since it is in the public domain. It is a pretty free translation, not particularly accurate, but with a charming turn of phrase. Very lively. But if a 200 year old translation will annoy you, don't get this one. Buy either Clarence Miller's or Betty Radice's translations from the 1970s. Both are on Amazon, Miller on Kindle. Miller is the most thorough, with the best helpful footnotes, and IMHO the best version to get. Get the paperback, not the Kindle, if you want to easily see the notes. Radice may be more readable, depending on your tastes.3. As usual, this Kindle edition is full of scanning errors. ("Doesn't any human being proofread these things?" he asked foolishly.) Periods have disappeared, but the following capital letter will help. Words are misspelled: clumb for climb, Une for line, and so on. Most are obvious. One particularly egregious example is Just for lust, a mistake which will really make you think: "Why is Just such a bad thing?"In short, if you are willing to put up with errors and somewhat old-fashioned language, 99 cents may be a reasonable price for the convenience of having this classic on Kindle.

Bottom Line: This review is of the Kindle edition of Erasmus’s In Praise of folly. Mine has a very good intro written by Jean Asta and no additional footnotes or commentary. My opinions aside, Praise of Folly is an important book in Western Civilization. It is worthy of your time on its own merit. The style of the period tends to weigh the humor down and a lack of internal division can make it a difficult read.Unless you come to this book as a student of Western Literature or a related educated background having some context before you begin In Praise of Folly is critical. This is fairly well provided in the Introduction. From small things like; the original Latin title can be read as a playful pun directed at England’s Sir Thomas Moore. The two had become friends while Erasmus was visiting him in England and the book was begun if not entirely written under Moore’s roof. The historic context is that Erasmus was also in close contact with Martin Luther. Much of what Erasmus prints in In Praise of Folly is at the expense of some contemporary Roman Catholic practice. Luther had an expectation that its author would follow him into the Protestant schism. Luther would not take it well when Erasmus chose to remaina Catholic. Indeed he had been a monk and am ordained priest. He lived as a scholar, thinker and writer. He is best known as a central figure in the creation of the Humanist Philosophy.In Praise of Folly is written in the form of a speech given by the Goddess of Folly making her claim of the primacy of Folly in human affairs. Her argument is intentionally faulty and occasionally contradictory but this is all part of the satire. Typical of Folly’s argument is an early one wherein she states that all humans are born in an act of folly. This is a favorite passage of mine, if only because it is early in the book. By the end of the book, about 85 pages, intro included, Folly has touched upon every phase of human life and made some pointed jests some of the extremes and apparent contradictions in religious practice.It is said that humor does not travel well across time. There are parts to this short book that left me smiling. I cannot claim to have understood many references. There is near the end an appeal to a very aesthetics religious outlook even at the expense of what we now call the sciences. Does Folly/Erasmus intend this to be taken literally or sardonically? Annotation and or footnoting would be a major help in addressing that which is obscured by history or requiring additional context.By the end of Folly, I felt as though I had been reading a run on sentence. There are distinct parts built into the flow of Folly’s speech. These could have been sectioned off, if only by skipping a few lines between them. The author may not have them in the original. Either way, the cascade of words with no breaks and the heavy, wordy style of the day made this a less pleasant read than it was intended. The right scholars may be able to read this and savor every joke and twist. For the rest a few explanations would help. These are not the fault of the Erasmus, but a recommendation that a better edition might include this additional help.

Long, long, extra long sentences. Counted 235 words in ONE sentence. Problem is he can't see to get a certain woman out of his mind. When their paths cross, she knows him but he doesn't know her. What follows is a wonderful story of Grayson introducing Avery to the delights of BDSM. But her past is still following her and due to a jealous woman wanting Grayson to herself, is about to catch up with her. What happens? Can Grayson save her? Well, you need to get the book to find out. I love the flow of this story and it's very easy to fall for the male characters, all of them. LOL Now to wait for Connor's book.

I enjoyed this second book in the series Cowboy Doms. You do not need to read the first book to enjoy this one, but it does help. Avery is an IT tech at a Chicago Police Department and she comes into information about two of the detectives stealing evidence (money, drugs, etc) When she realizes that they are willing to kill her to keep her quiet, she flees. She tries being a phone sex operator, but she has no experience with sex. Grayson calls the phone line by accident and he ends up giving her pointers. He then invites her to his town if she ever needs help. And, of course, she does. What she doesn’t know is that Grayson is a dom and he wants her. She shows up in Willow Springs, Montana and the story starts. There is an eventual HEA and it is a fun ride there.I enjoyed this second story in the series and I look forward to more books in the series. I give this an enthusiastic 5 stars!

On our return trip to Willow Springs, we meet Avery a woman on the run wondering who to trust. Is she a fool for thinking she has found that someone because of his voice? Since there are a few "voices" that make me tingle and sigh, who am I to judge? Will Avery trust Grayson before jealousy and the past catches up with her? I jumped at the chance to read this new book by Ms. Wane. From the time I downloaded it until the final page(two hours later) I was completely lost in the story. Wonder which Dom is the next to fall?I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Avery is a computer nerd working for the Chicago police department when she discovers her policeman boyfriend is crooked, and may harm her. She runs to Montana where she meets Grayson, the local sheriff – and someone she had once spoken to on the telephone. An affair develops – with plenty of spankings as Grayson is a Dom – and it is interesting, although a bit rushed at the end, as to how the story works itself out. Both Grayson and Avery are well described and highly intelligent characters – however, I thought the book would have been strengthened with a little more development in the conclusion of the problems.

Avery and Grayson are people you want to meet and be friends with. You could feel the fear and uncertainty. The joy and happiness. Thank you for another fabulous read!

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the second book in the Cowboy Doms series. In this book, Grayson is the sheriff and is partners with his two best friends in The Barn, a BDSM club. Grayson is a dom and he has no interest in having his own sub, he would prefer to play with the subs at the club. One night while Grayson was making a phone call, he dialed the wrong number and got a phone sex worker. Avery was running from her ex-boyfriend and his partner, who were Chicago cops and were dirty. Avery had the evidence and was running to try and get somewhere safe until she could turn them in. Avery was really bad at the phone sex job and she begged Grayson to help her. Grayson loved how submissive the mystery woman on the phone was and he talked her into submitting to him. Grayson suspected she was in trouble and told her to look him up if she wanted help. Avery headed to see Grayson to she if she could trust him and get help. When Avery showed up in town, she managed to get a job at the local diner. When Grayson came into the diner, she met him and there was an instant attraction. Grayson felt he knew Avery, but couldn't remember meeting her. When Avery came to the club as a guest, Grayson wanted to show her around the club. Avery allowed Grayson to show her around the club and introduce her to the lifestyle. Grayson was becoming attached to Avery, but knew she had secrets and wanted her to tell him everything. I really loved this book. I loved Grayson, i thought he was a great guy who really wanted to protect Avery. I think Grayson accepted Avery was his from the beginning and loved her. Avery knew she could trust Grayson, but she was scared about what would happen after she told him the truth. I loved this book and can't wait for the next one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book is an enticing blend of romance, suspense, humor and hot BDSM scenes. The story line is well written, grabbed my attention and kept me hooked until the last page was read. I liked Grayson and Avery so much! It was supremely easy to fall for Such a swoon worthy hero. Grayson was 100% dominate male, caring, protective, clever and sweet. Avery was a good person, had a huge heart and had a core of steel she never knew was there. It was delightful to witness the evolution of the relationship between these two from just two unknown voices on the phone to soulmates. Beautiful, exciting and spicy, this book delivers on every way. This is my independent, impartial review.

Don’t waste your money.

Horrible CD.

I first received this CD...put it in my car and it did not play, Error!!!! I returned it and they replaced it with another CD. Again this does not play right, it plays for a few questions/answers then gets stuck like it's all scratched. When I looked at the CD it was fine no scratches. I was going to return it again but it just wasn't worth the hassle. It is not worth it.I now have been charged again for not returning it. That's twice I have been charged for a CD that does not work AND YOU CAN"T CONTACT A TALKING HUMAN TO TRY TO FIX THE ISSUE

Awesome! 20 years ago, I used to listen to this (cassette at the time) album to fall asleep every night. I bought it to share with my daughter. Funny, silly poems performed with catchy tunes and comedic voices. I purchased the book as well, poems in the book do not follow the same order as the electronic version, but a wonderful option to read at home or listen in the car. Kudos to Prelusky for making poetry fun and silly for kids and adults alike!

I had this book from when I was really young, and it stuck with me for a long time. I still have no clue what happened to the copy I owned, but I still remember some of the poems in it. Great to see it again! I decided to use it form my Children's Literature class. This can be a great addition to other poem books, like Seuss and Silverstein. I remember giving this to my teacher to read to us. I remember the kids in the class loving it jsut as much as I did. Ah, such fond memories from a single book!The poems inside are silly, unique and appropriate for even young-aged kids. A must if your kids like to read. Highly recommended for a classroom collection, too.

I had used this book years ago in an elementary library instruction program. When I recently quoted "Homework, Oh Homework, I Hate You, You Stink" to my 5-yr-old grandson, he asked me if he could have the book. I gave it to him for his birthday and he loves reading from it before bed.

I had to buy this for my niece after I found myself starting a poem from the book and not remembering how to finish it. Imagine that - it's been at least 16 years since I had this book, yet I could still recite stanzas at will. How frustrating it was not to have all of them!Jack Prelutsky is one of the best children's poets out there. You MUST have this book - indoctrinate your kid in the joys of reading poetry aloud when they're young, and you'll never have to unteach them "poetry is boring" when they're older.

I loved this book as a 2nd grader and bought it for my nephew who is in the 2nd grade. I hope he loves it like I did.

In the product listing, it's suggested for age 5 and up. I bought this for my poetry-loving 6-year-old. We introduced her to the world of Jack Prelutsky some time ago withRead-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young. She loves that book. Although she has asked us to re-read selections from this book a couple of times, I can tell this is one we should have waited a bit for. Plus, this book has plenty of poems with words like "ugly", "mean" and "hate". We try to monitor our kids use of those words, so we've had some explaining to do. So besides the age-appropriateness issue of this particular book, Prelutsky is a gift to children and to all of us who want children to truly explore the world of poetry. It's too bad some think that can happen by forcing them to read poetry that clearly wasn't written for children. This isn't my favorite of his works, but it's hard to be perfect every day. Kevorkian denies belief in an afterlife, and considers his cause an ethical one. The author recounts the actual last moments of the dying patients who have turned to Kevorkian. H.W. Brands is an excellent historian, highly skilled at researching a topic and at telling a tale in engaging, illuminating prose. This, his latest book, contains many of those elements, making it an enjoyable and informative read. But it is not without its problems.One inherent problem with a book such as "Heirs of the Founders" is that it focuses on the lives of three different men--Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. It is difficult enough to compile a biography of one individual in less than 400 pages, but Brands tells the reader about these three men in only 370 pages of text. Such an approach is bound to leave out much, and that is what keeps this good book from being a great one.For example, Brands says that Thomas Jefferson "rode the wave of opposition [to the Alien and Sedition Acts] into the White House . . ." But the Election of 1800, to which Brands is referring, was far more complex. Indeed, had there been no Three-Fifths Compromise, John Adams would have won the election outright. The compromise allowed southern states to count slaves as three-fifths of a person when determining the state's population and thus the number of representatives the state would get in the House. They would each get an equal number of electors. As it was, no candidate got a majority of electoral votes, sending the election into the House, which elected Jefferson. A simple sentence or two would have clarified the issue.Brands brings up the gag rule but does not explain what it was. He seems to assume his reader knows. The gag rule was a resolution in the House that tabled, without discussion, all petitions regarding slavery. But Brands doesn't tell us this.In addition, Brands makes no mention of Daniel Webster's affair with Sarah Goodrich, a young artist. The affair took place in the late 1820s, while Webster's wife was dying of stomach cancer back in Massachusetts. This behavior certainly gives an insight into Webster's character, but Brands seems to be in a hurry and so skips or glosses over many aspects of these three men and their times.In another example, Brands does not mention Henry Clay's most famous quote--"I'd rather be right than be president." Spoken in 1838, it was seen as sour grapes by many. Nor does he mention that Clay was an inveterate gambler. Or that he could, at times, be downright nasty.The fact that the book has fifty-nine chapters in 370 pages only adds to the rushed feeling of "Heirs of the Founders." What Brands has given us is good. But another hundred or so pages could have made it great.

H. W. Brands has written another superb volume, primarily relying upon the speeches, and written words of the “Heirs of the Founders” in their attempt to prevent the shattering of the Union. Henry Clay was determined to sail between the “Scylla of states’ rights and the Charybdis of rampant federalism”, a perilous choice that still has meaning for us today. He was guided by the realism of a resident of a border state: “A statesman did what he could in his country’s service, not what he would.” The ever more infamous John C. Calhoun; a man whose ambition was disguised as intellect, and believed that the institution of slavery was not a necessary evil; but in fact, a positive good that enabled a superior culture to thrive. Daniel Webster; a ‘Master of Persuasion’ who was weakened by an ever more strident and powerful abolitionist movement in Massachusetts that left diminishing room for compromise.This is the story of their last great work; the Missouri Compromise of 1850; the abomination of the Fugitive Slave Law which allowed the kidnapping and sale of free American citizens, and the compulsion of other Americans to cooperate with this act; as epitomized in tragedy of Solomon NorthrupTwelve Years a Slave.In retrospect we must balance the worth of a ‘compromise’ that gave us ten more years of national misery and the suffering of slavery against ten years in which the North became more industrialized and with an ever more increasing disparity of wealth and population between the regions.My examination copy lacked the index and illustrations, but contained the notes and a brief introduction to the original sources

University of Texas history professor H.W. Brands has written a biography of the three giants who dominated Congress in the first half of the 19th Century, namely Henry Clay, John Calhoun and Daniel Webster. All three were great intellects and orators who had a common dislike, for different reasons, of President Andrew Jackson.Clay comes on the scene in 1811 where in his first term he becomes Speaker of the House. He and Calhoun would join together as the leading “war hawks” and push Madison into war against England. They would later split over the issues of tariffs, slavery and most important, the preservation of the Union. Clay would become the author of the American System based on protective tariffs, internal improvements and a national bank which made him the true heir to Alexander Hamilton. In 1820 he would put together the Missouri Compromise which delayed the ultimate reckoning of the slavery issue and thereby allowed the continued development of a growing America.Calhoun, who served as vice-president to both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, quite a feat in its own right, became the tribune of the South. He fought tariffs, championed slavery and the ability of states to nullify federal laws they opposed which offered the theoretical basis for secession.Webster had a brilliant career as a lawyer where he was victorious in such major Supreme Court cases as McCulloch v. Maryland, Dartmouth College and Gibbons v. Ogden. Although he is most remembered for his “Union, now and forever” speech in his Reply to Hayne, he supported New England secession during the War of 1812.In 1850 all three of them, now all over 70, came together in the great debate over the admission of California into the Union as a free state, the treatment of fugitive slaves and the extension of slavery into the New Mexico Territory. The end result of the debate was yet another successful Clay compromise. And it was here where Webster in order to save the Union bent over backwards against his abolitionist constituency, on the issues of fugitive slaves and slavery in the New Mexico Territory, to agree with Clay. Oh to be in the Senate Gallery to hear the debate. The next best thing is reading Brands’ account. All three would be dead within two years.Brands brings to life these three great personalities as they dominated the Congress for 40 years. It is history at its best. I only wish our current Congress had at least one Clay or a Webster and unfortunately too much of the nullification spirit of John Calhoun is alive and well in both parties today.
