About the Author

Rüdiger G. Ballas was born in 1971 in Blieskastel, Germany. After finishing education as an assistant in physics at the Technical School for Natural Sciences Ludwigshafen, Germany, he received the diploma in microsystemtechnology in 1999 from the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern, Germany. From 1999 until 2001 he worked with Tele Quarz in Neckarbischofsheim, Germany, where he was head of the group concerning microstructuring of AT-quartz crystals and development of high-frequency inverted MESA-quartzes. From 2001 until 2006 he worked as a Ph.D. student at Darmstadt University of Technology in the field of piezoelectric bending multilayer actuators with integrated sensors for tip deflection measurements. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2006 from Darmstadt University of Technology. His actual research fields are theoretical mechanics, electromechanical system theory and modeling of the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric actuators.

I bought this book mainly for students to prepare for the HiSet math test. The reviews were very good so when it arrived, I was shocked to see there were no pretests and no real step-by-step teaching or practice materials. The review materials seem highly condensed and may be excellent for a student who was once proficient and just needs a refresher. But it's hard to see how this book would benefit a struggling student with significant gaps in their skills, since there is no step-by-step presentation of mathematical procedures, followed by exercises to drive the new skills home. It's wonderful that it includes full-length practice tests for each area, but, speaking just of the math, if I kid got stuck on a problem in the practice exam, I don't think he could find the help he needed to solve the problem in the body of the text. As other reviewers have noted, it is VERY text heavy (though the writing is high quality and packed with information) with few illustrations to lighten things up. On the other hand, I am just starting to use the book in the classroom, and that will be a better test of its usefulness. If it turns out to be a winner with the students, hopefully I will say so. One noteworthy feature is that the book comes with access to many videos which can be viewed on the Mometrix website. You could not ask for easier videos to get to, just two simple steps.

I purchased this book, along with another well known HiSet book and found that I often used the other book, because it seemed easier to follow. That meaning, the other book seemed to have easier questions.I purchased this book after already passing 4 of the 5 battery of tests. All I had left was math, my worst subject. I wanted a book that had practice tests, and this one did.Today I went to take my final exam. I felt that the questions in this book were much more real to the actual test questions. I have been out of school for 30 years, so this was not an easy task for me. I ended up passing and will be receiving my diploma soon!If you are torn between which HiSet book to purchase,I would suggest this one. The math questions are harder, much like the actual test.

I really love this book I use it all the time its very good for any hiset takers, it has a lot of details and it covers a lot of subjects, I had a science test last week and I passed because of this book its really my favorite I love how in the reading chapter its just covers anything and have all explanation needed . I gave my teacher the same book and he really loved it!!

I truly recommend the book to any Illini fan who would enjoy "reliving" that dream season.Some tidbits:* When Weber entered the Ohio State arena (before that fateful first loss), an Ohio State fan yelled, "You're going down, Coach!"Weber replied, "Thank you."* Weber's voice is the way it is because of a surgery he had when he was 8 or 9 years old. He had polyps in his throat and they were lasered/burned off.His remembrances of the Arizona game, the championship game, and the beginnings of his professional relationship with Gene Keady are a treat to read and too special to be entirely revealed here.No, it's not bestseller material (like Three Nights in August), but for rabid Illini fans such as myself, it's well worth the read.

I am a photography nut and took a darkroom class at my local university. Got this book used and found some good things in it but most of it is way over my head. If you just want to do some basics, even some intermediate stuff like Stand Development, I would say stick with YouTube and save some money even if you can get it for the cheap used price.

Haven't done darkroom work since the 70's.Decided to resume printing photos and thoughtit a good idea to get a reference book.I can't remember everything!Glad to have it. Easily searchable, comprehensive andnot too wordy. A good reference book.

Michael Langford's Darkroom Handbook has it all -- in clear, easy-to-read text and excellent photo examples. This is the book for someone serious about setting up a darkroom and starting to develop and print either B&W or color film, negative or transparency. In addition, a wide range of printing techniques and specialty methods are discussed and described, as well. Lots of good refresher information on techniques and methods for the experienced print-maker, too.

Well worth the money

I am a first time know anything about negatives or what is involved and this was a great start. I gave it a 4 star because it is a great beginning and really wasn't sure if it needed a 5 star since I am a novice. I recommend the book to anyone that is a beginner.

This slim book contains, as the title suggests, short stories about the American Civil War, several of which appear to be memoirs rather than fiction. Bierce fought in the war on the Union side. Although I have read a number of Civil War books, I think this is the first that was written by a veteran of that war. (Shame on me.)The sixteen short stories form a striking and illuminating set; honest, at times brutally so, about the gore and the cost of war, yet allowing improbabilities when it serves the narrative. Individually, the stories are very strong. Collectively, their similarities in tone and storytelling technique made them slightly less effective. I anticipated turns in the tales, some of which might otherwise have surprised me. I read the book, intermittently, over six weeks, but maybe should have stretched it out longer.It is hard to single out a favorite story, but I particularly liked "Four Days in Dixie," which appears to be autobiographical, and which uses humor to offset the terrible plight in which the narrator finds himself.Highly recommended.

I kept this book in my car and read it while meeting up with people or if I was grabbing a coffee. I think it made me show up to things a lot earlier so I would have reading time - like a half hour early so I could read a story.There are lots of books like this one where you can get an actual idea of what the Civil War was like. I would recommend reading this or the many others if you think taking down Jim Crowe era statues is eliminating history.

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) who in my opinion, while not as well known as other American fiction writters, non the less deserves greater recgnition and readership. Bierce was best know for the sardonic wit and grim houmor of his short stories regarding the supernatural, macbre, and the grim reality of life and death. The seventeen US Civil War stories collected here are some of the best examples of Bierce’s fiction. Relying heavily on his own experiences of the War, he describes the darker side of human nature in grim, unflinching narratives. In the characters, we see glimpses of Bierce’s own personality: alienation, gallows wit and fatalism. I believe many adult reader will enjoy reading some, if not all of the stories in this collection.

“I consider anybody a twerp who hasn't read the greatest American short story, which is 'Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,' by Ambrose Bierce.” - Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country, 2005. "Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" provided the plot for the movie Johnny Darko, the series Lost, and probably countless others. Learn to see it coming, read the original!Also, Bierce was a Shiloh veteran, so it is an apt theme for a collection of Bierce's stories.

Bierce has the edge of writing from the perspective of one who was there, and he makes you a part of the action, as though you were in a cyclorama - think Gettysburg or Atlanta. His stories remind me of Karl Marlantes, writing of his experiences as a Marine officer in Vietnam. His title is 'Matterhorn' and his is a book about his tour of combat (already a classic.) Just as with Bierce you're in the moment. And both writers portray the senselessness, banality and cruelty of war. Both also share a taste for the twist, ne the denouement in the 3rd act.Bierce, while being exceptional, also writes in the style of the late 19th century. At that he'll impact you emotionally in a way that's rare. Other reviews here are quite good, and quite descriptive, but you must read it for yourself. Terrific!

A DARK book. This work explores just some of the heartbreak of a civil war. Brother aganist brother. Families divided. Brutality, the order of the day. But, it does put the whole matter of warring into its real perspective. Dehumanizing the enemy to cover any feelings or regrets brought on by slaughtering other human beings, even if they are family.

Ambrose Bierce was an acerbic, conceited, misfit of a man often in conflict with those around him but his distance from people allowed him to observe them with a laser focus. These are not your standard war stories of bravery, cowardice and conflict although all these elements are here in abundance, no, these stories are about the Twilight Zone ending, the Rod Serling irony, the fickle twist of fate, the opposite being true of the obvious. No wonder "An Occurance At Owl Creek Bridge" was the only Twilight Zone not produced by Serling. Ambrose Bierce had already produced it as though he had The Zone in mind as he was writing it. All of these stories will stay with you long after you have closed the pages.

This is a book of short stories all about the everyday lives of civil participants. All are filled with the dark content consistent with the author of life and the consequence of death. It gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of the every day soldier.Overall a good book for the Civil War scholar and anyone who enjoys works of fiction based on the irony of the human condition.
