I guess he did warn us with the picture on the front that reads "A Memoir of Fumbling Toward Adulthood", but I was disappointed that he stopped his tale at the point he got his first Broadway show - after all, he's been in 2 of the biggest hits in the past 15 years, I'd have liked to hear about his work on them and his famous friends (Gavin Creel is the only semi-famous person that appears in this book). I guess he's holding out for a 2nd book?Part inspiration for future actors, part a sad tale of love(s) gone wrong, but all heart, this really is a lovely debut for the author. He's sassy and brassy in all the right places, you'd definitely want to be in his posse in late night NYC.
Over-night success takes a LONG time to achieve. Andrew Rannell tells the story of his professional and personal life with great wit and charm. As a performer, naturally, he delivers the goods as an audio presentation without it ever feeling as if he is 'performing' his story for the microphone. If you are at all sensitive about gay life (I'm not - if you are, get over it...) you may relate to his personal/sex life stories as well, but they are not shared to be 'shocking' , in fact some young people in his camp may find his frankness inspiring. He paints a vivid picture of the NYC club scene of his youth as well as the long journey of luck, drive, and determination that has lead him to be the talented star he is today. My only complaint is (as is the case with all audio books) I would love to see the photos that the print edition must have! Would it kill them to give us a link to a PDF of the photos with memoirs like this?
as a big andrew rannells lover and fan, i may be a bit bias but i thoroughly enjoyed this book! i’m more into fiction and rarely read biography or nonfiction but his writing is so fun and it made the experience so delightful. anyone how knows andrew can see he has this wonderful energy and such a fun person and in his writings that personality really shines through! the book is full of wild and wacky stories to give you laugh but still shares dark past and give makes you view andrew in a different light. you really start to know him more and i’m happy i got to read this!! i really suggests it to anyone who wants to pursue a career in theater, book includes real stuggles from a very talented actor and funny theater jokes!!
What a great read. Rannells' writer-voice is fun and funny, which is not a surprise if you have ever heard him speak or watched an interview with him. If you enjoy his work as an actor, you will most likely enjoy this book as well. I was also struck by how touching--and honest--the book is. I'm part of the Omaha theatre community, so I know a bit about the world he grew up in. I was just getting involved in the community as he was preparing to leave, though I remember meeting him once after he saw a play I was in, and I was struck by what a friendly, open kid he was. To his credit, it looks like that quality remains in the man he has become.
I started this book when I came home from work one night and couldn’t put it down until I finished it roughly 4 hours later. One of the best and most relatable memoirs I’ve ever read. To me, it’s a perfect book.

Loved the use of humor in this one and the stories of what led him to getting his first big break on Broadway.After graduating high school, Andrew Rannells left his hometown of Omaha and moved to New York City with dreams of having an acting career. In this book Andrew shares stories of getting involved with community theater as a kid, coming to terms with being gay in Middle America, and surviving in a city that is full of people with the exact same hopes and dreams of making it big in the acting world.Andrew is just a really good storyteller. There's a nice balance of humor and heart throughout the book. He's an easy person to relate to as he shared his feelings of not having a clue at what he was doing most of the time and just kinda had to learn along the way. Your heart breaks when he goes into detail about the times he was taken advantage of by sexual predators. When he starts to experience some success, you can't help but feel happy for him. Overall, a good memoir and I would love reading another book in which he talks about his life after making it big.I received a free advance copy from the publisher but was under no obligation to post a review.
