I cannot say enough great things about this book and Melissa’s recipes in general. From family to friends, every recipe I’ve made from this book has been met with “this is the best X ever.” Super easy to follow with basic ingredients that every home cook has on hand, this is an easy book to pick up to simply make something delicious. Melissa’s tips for pantry and for ways to stretch and reinvigorate ingredients that are already made are super helpful! I cook all the time and I’ve learned a few quick tricks to simplify the process of making things. Love this book!

The food, pictures, and simplicity are everything I love and look for in a cookbook—10 stars for those if I could. Like her, I prefer to eat little meat, so I loved that most recipes are plant-based. The flavors in them are incredible, the food is aesthetically a treat as well, and the recipes are easy to make in little time without a big mess. It's also been great to see that when I meal plan from this cookbook, my weekly grocery lists are simple and I'm spending less on groceries--the recipes are economical in a way I hand't expected, and they're also incredibly satisfying and clean "comfort foods." I also love how she writes and describes her approach, I just wasn't quite convinced it's really "minimalist." She acknowledges that minimalism is a spectrum/journey, and very few people arrive at the far end of it, so I like that honesty. I just would've liked to have been more challenged and guided in paring down my kitchen and pantry, but her suggestions for a stocked pantry and some of the equipment she mentions (tortilla and butter warmers were surprises) call for more buying and storing than I already do. But the recipes are some of my new all-time favorites, and I probably wouldn’t have bought the book without the title. It would be nice to see a follow up, though, that offers a more challenging application of minimalism to the kitchen. It's such an important philosophy, but it's become watered down and (I think) calls for more rigor in the paring down of what we consume than some of this book suggests.

First, the negative: I heard about this book on the Thug Kitchen podcast. Both that interview and reviews on amazon led me to believe that this was a vegetarian-heavy cookbook, but I’m not really impressed with the proportion of vegan meals. If I had thumbed through this book at a Barnes and Noble, I may not have bought it. I’ve also been interested in minimalism, and was eager to hear the author’s advice on that front. Turns out I already own even fewer kitchen appliances and stuff than she does, so I didn’t gain a ton of advice there.Positives: the recipes are clearly-written, approachable, and have reasonable ingredients lists. If I weren’t a vegan, this would be a great weekday meal resource. It might also be more helpful to people with full and established kitchens trying to cut back, rather than student 20-somethings who already have very basic kitchens out of economic necessity.

A great resource for easy, fantastic meals. I've been making Melissa's recipes for a long time and I wasn't disappointed with those featured in the book. I also love the section on pantry, seasoning and gadget essentials. I thought it was brilliant.

This cookbook was game changer in every sense of the word. It changed me mentally, physically and fiscally. In college I started the habit of eating out almost every meal and that continued after college so much so I started a foodie Instagram of everything I was eating out. With a depleting bank account and an increased waistlaine I knew something had to give! I had purchased many cookbooks in the past only for them to serve as decor for my dying succulents, but this one was different! It got me excited about cooking, made me more confident in my abilities and overall just changed my outlook that cooking at home can be just as exciting!

I have a cookbook problem so I tend to borrow cookbooks from the library (and try my best to avoid buying them). However, I felt the need to purchase this one after I had made a number of great recipes in the week since borrowing "Minimalist Kitchen" from my local branch. I am vegan, my husband eats meat and my kids tend to eat a very limited number of foods (chicken nuggets) so I was not looking for a cookbook to solve my dinner problem, just make it a little easier (and fun). So far I have tried: BBQ Black Bean and Quick Slaw Tacos, Chickpea Tikka Masala with Curry Cauliflower, Quick Vodka Sauce Pasta, Diner Burgers (GAME CHANGER per husband), Garlicky Potato Wedges, Thai Spiced Rice Bowls, Roasted Chickpea Bahn Mi Salad, Maple Salty Dog (such a pretty drink and very tasty), Maple Bourbon Sour. The only miss out of all of these was the Thai Spiced Rice Bowl. I love the ingredients as parts but I didn't feel that the broth was tasty enough and I didn't love the raw garnishes. That said, the rest of the recipes were easy, TASTY and fun (since I was also trying the drink recipes). Melissa -- thank you for this book. I have been carrying my library copy around all week to plan dinners and I look forward to my purchased copy arriving in 2 days.Oh! And there is a great section on organization and achieving a more minimalist home. Some day I'll refer back to this chapter. It spoke to me, for sure.

I have a problem buying cookbooks. And things for the kitchen in general. But this was a great purchase that will help me in both areas. I love the way she lays out essential pantry and kitchen items, but encourages you to adapt to your lifestyle. Her recipes are delicious and flexible. I’ve made a few already (including the pasta, using broccoli instead of asparagus), and they are very good! I’ve bookmarked many more to make! Thank you Faux Martha!

I rarely purchase cookbooks anymore these days (because Pinterest) but this is just one of those books you want to own. Sure you can visit the authors blog but the book just puts it all together, recipes that build on recipes and ways to use different ingredients in more than one way which minimizes the always potential waste when it comes to food. Oh, and everything I’ve tried so far has been delish.

It's quirky and had a bit of an old school vibe to it where nothing is as it seems and even though a crime is committed you aren't expected to take it too seriously. I feel like the style was a breath of fresh air and not something you really get to see much in today's books. I did think the first half of the book was stronger than the second. I probably would have enjoyed this one a tad more if it was written as a novella rather than a full length novel. Bluff starts off with a bang, literally. Because Maud, or Mad Maud as they call her, has shot Sun Sutherland while he was dining at The Four Seasons. What continues is an unfolding of the people connected to Sun and subsequently, his best friend Burt Sklar, who was Maud's intended target.Bluff is told through various pieces of information, not just Maud's point of view, by Sun's wife Jean, and Sklar and the stripper he's chasing after. Maud is a very strong character, she's smart, so much smarter than people give her credit for. I found myself cheering her on.Sklar was such a sleazy character and I felt he was written so well. From scamming Maud's mother out of money to cozying up to Sun, everything he does is with an ulterior motive, he's a social climber who is always looking for the next easy paycheck.I loved that the book centered around poker and the various aspects of playing it, hence the title, Bluff. Anyone who plays knows the cunning and skill involved is impressive. I think it will make a fan of non-players. As I'm writing this review, I find myself coming back to Maud again. She was such a fun character and I found myself surprised by her. I think because she lived so long as the outcast in society, people seriously underestimated her, and that label of Mad Maud allowed her to focus on getting what she wants.The writing style is very unique and engaging because you find yourself racing through each chapter, anxious to piece it all together. Just when you think you've figured it out, the author throws you a twist. It's a fun and witty read, the characters are so well-written and you find yourself cheering Maud on. I loved the camaraderie among the woman, as it's nice to see strong women in a book. Jane Stanton Hitchcock has a new fan!

After the death of her mother, Maud and her brother were informed that there was no money left from the millions that he initially controlled. Now Maud has carefully plotted her revenge. Having become a frequent poker player, she knows the importance of a good bluff and she uses this to her advantage.She was referred to as “Mad Maud” when she first start d making accusations against Sklar, but time has passed and she was forgotten by most of her old friends. Now Sunderland is dead. News of his infidelity and financial manipulations ar flying through society and his best friend Sklar played a part in all of it. It seems “Mad Maud” was right and now she has to find a way to use these accusations to her advantage.Jane Stanton Hitchcock has written a story that is full of unexpected twists. From Maud’s opening shot to her final surprising testimony in court, her actions are calculated and she never shows her hand until the game is over. From the New York society dinners to the illegal poker dens, this story was pure fun to read and I would highly recommend it. I would like to thank Bookish First for providing a copy of this book for my review.

I have got to say that this is one of my favorite books for this year! The author starts with a bang, literally and continues to reveal why the killing was justified throughout the book. Maud is a likeable character, who seeks revenge for her mother’s lost fortune. She is also a master at the poker table and this whole book is about her “bluff.” I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, including quirky Danya and the lady who was better than a gossip magazine, Magma. In fact, I liked all of the characters, except for those due retribution, of course. The novel is written in such a way that the reader is quickly drawn into the story and the desire is to continue to speed read until the end. I didn’t understand the poker hands or jargon, but that did not distract from my total enjoyment of this amusing and entertaining book. As I read this book I found everything Chris said clicking with how I work. He pretty much summed up my own outlining process, but in a clearer way (totally going to use the exercises as a step-by-step guide). I basically start with the concept/synopsis for the book, which I derive from brainstorming/snowflaking. Then I do some quick character sketches and move onto Dan Harmon's story circles for the main characters. BTW, I really like how detailed Chris got in this section of the book. He tackled each each point with clear explanations and multiple examples. Very useful! Then I use Russell Blakes' action beat and reversal/surprise technique. Its very comforting and affirming to read that Chris has come to the same workflow :)I don't stop there though. I find I need a little bit more for my scenes before I start writing. I do some location scouting, which I learned from the guys over at Sterling and Stone. I'll find some pictures/art for the locations along with writing down key features, props, and smells that might be in the scene - that way I don't have to think of them on the spot as I'm writing, letting me focus on the story instead of the details. I also add info I picked up from Jim Butcher and Deborah Chester - Goal, Conflct, Disaster, Reaction, Dilemma, Decision. Sure this is more work up front, but it makes the writing process so much more enjoyable.

I've read The Writer's Journey, Story Engineering, The Art of Character, Layer Your Novel, and many more. But this book is different because it explains the creative process in addition to what-to-do. How do ideas form and fit together to create a whole. When an idea pops into your head, what do you do with it and why? If you're suffering from writers block, and don't know what story to write, I could see how Fox's beginning suggestions could help you turn intangible ideas into concrete sentences and put inspiration into your writing. Very well done and I will read often for reference.

Lately, I've steeped myself in information on outlining novels in an attempt to level up my craft.Even so, Chris Fox managed to provide a fresh take on the subject, which helped fill in gaps that I now realize were missing from my approach.My Kindle is full of highlights from this book that I plan to revisit the next time I sit down with pen and paper to outline a novel. Whether it's thinking of each plot development in terms of its proper setup, choosing the right kind of character flaws for your genre, or A/B testing plot developments to see which one results in the richer story..these are tools I plan to keep in my gardener's toolbox for each time I plan a new harvest!

So this actually taught me how to plot effectively!Often when asked if I were a pantser or plotter, I would answer "pantser" -- but the truth was I'm sort of in the middle. At some point I started saying "plantser", which no one seemed to understand; a better word was "percolator" but even fewer people understood that one.Now I can say I'm a gardener, because after reading this book not only do I know I am in the middle of the two things, I know *how to do it more effectively*. (Also, composting ideas is a lot like percolating them.)If you're vacillating somewhere in between pantsing and plotting and can't really figure out what works for you, I recommend reading this book. It helped me a lot and now I have way more self-confidence in my plotting skills. Turns out it wasn't that I was *bad* at plotting -- I had just never been given the right tools to do it effectively for my writing style.

This book will absolutely change how you write your stories. I have always been a pantsing plotter, suffering from constant questioning and retooling. Plot Gardening has changed that for me. Provocative questions and examples of why the seeds of your story are more important as to how tall your tree will grow. If you don't take care of the garden before you sow, your reap will bear little fruit. It is as heavy with Character Development as it is with Plot, and Chris reminds us we cannot have one without the other. Plot Gardening systematically leads you from the ideas to character development and world building. There are helpful links throughout the book in case you find yourself lost in your own head. If you want to go from a good writer to an amazing author; GET. THIS. BOOK!

You can tell Chris has done the time as an experienced writer and lays out some of the best methods for planning your novel.I think every writer could gain something from this book. I’ve always been partly a pantser and plotter for writing my stories, however, after reading this book I’ve gained a much better system for plotting and writing my current series.Read this book, do the exercises at the end of each chapter and watch how your story develops. I dare you!

I've really enjoyed Chris' nonfiction book series so far, and this installment is certainly no exception. He does a great job of presenting a lot of different options when it comes to considering how to plot a story, and backs it up and examples from well known works of fiction that the reader will easily understand (or can easily get access to). Even for longtime writers like me, Chris was able to present new information to consider in my own writing disciplines.

This book contains the best explanation of the Hero's Journey for writers I've ever found. Most explanations get bogged down in stuff about threshold guardians and which character should be your trickster archetype. But Chris gives you just what you need to create strong character arcs and outlines. My outlining has already improved since finishing this book the other day.
