(This is about the kindle version!) ... Of course, the contents are, in general, excellent and substantial. This review is not about that. It's about how this e-book does not take much advantage of the possibilities offered by the electronic format.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The main thing to get this for is the introductions, essays, notes (annotations), and the complete NRSV w/ apocrypha. But it can be very hard to use the kindle version as a true study Bible because citations and cross-references in the notes are not hyperlinked -- meaning that you would have to manually find the verses being cited or given as cross references, and finding a specific verse is time consuming because there are no chapter links within individual books. Etc. However, the introductions and notes are good.RAMBLING, FULL-LENGTH VERSION: Navigability should be improved. Links should be added for all verse citations/cross references. A real table of contents with links for each book and book chapters should be added. Once you navigate to a book, there should at that point be a (hyperlinked) list of the book's chapters, so you can touch (for example) "Chapter 12" and go straight to Chapter 12 (instead of having to manually go one page at a time to get there). This e-book, I think, really should be updated to take advantage of the electronic medium. As it is now, it's nicely formatted, but it only very minimally takes advantage of the possibilities of the electronic format - the main issue is navigability. The annotations are somewhat inconsistently implemented. Some verses you touch the verse number and a pane comes up in the bottom 1/3 of the screen with the commentary/note. Other verses, you touch the verse number, and then are taken to a page (like end notes). Some verse citations (all of them within the footnotes) are not hyperlinked. It would be extremely time consuming read through a book's chapter, read the notes for that chapter, and then manually find the verses/cross references cited in the notes, and then go back to where you started reading from -- because of the lack of hyperlinks. But that kind of intense study reading, and going back and forth and following the cross-references, etc., is exactly what a study Bible like this is supposed to be for - if you want to do that, you may be happier getting the paper version of this.Again - in the commentary/notes, cross-references and citations to other verses are NOT hyperlinked! (You would have to manually search for them.) OUP really should update this so that all verse citations and cross-references are hyperlinked! (Note: the kindle of the NABRE translation (ASIN: B0054SLCOQ) has this feature (all it's notes/cross-references ARE hyperlinked - each and every one! the kindle version of that Bible really takes advantage of the electronic medium. It's the best kindle Bible I've found. For $5.99 it's a great deal. It's a Catholic Bible, so includes most of the "apocrypha" and the notes/commentary are extensive and detailed.) Anyway, the NOAB 5th Ed could really use an update to make it a really functional electronic book: namely, all verse citations should be hyperlinked and the annotations should be implemented in a more uniform way.I was actually pretty surprised about these two issues: (1) that verse references and cross references within the annotations do NOT have ANY hyperlinks, and (2) - not really as important - the inconsistent way in which verse annotations are implemented (some appear as a pane in bottom half of screen, others as end notes, others (infrequently) seem not to work, and for some verses you touch the verse number and it takes you to the endnotes and, somewhat confusingly, there is not always a specific note for that verse there.Anyway, it's still very nice to have this in a portable (kindle) format, but it takes some time to get used to how the annotations can be accessed, and navigation could be VERY much improved (e.g., add a real table of contents with links, add chapter links, add links for verse citations and cross-references in the notes).Re lack of chapter links: As the book is now, if you want to read, for example, John 3:16, you would have to find John in the list of books at the front, and then manually keep tapping to reach "John" in that list (going all the way from Genesis), and then once at the start of John (there is no chapter list there), so you would have to manually go one page at a time until you get to the 3rd chapter. This isn't always so bad, especially in shorter books, but what if you're trying to get to the 48th Chapter in Isaiah? Find Isaiah in the list of books, then touch that, then manually go one page at a time until you reach chapter 48?! I can't believe OUP didn't provide better navigation - at least for chapters. As it is now, this is - for me - a little arduous to navigate through sometimes. In a way, that has a certain charm: this kindle e-book will not surrender forth all of its riches without some effort on the reader's part! But - this is an e-book. It is SUPPOSED TO BE easy to navigate! OUP really should be updated to take advantage of and utilize the possibilities, presently mostly latent, offered by the electronic format. Perhaps the 6th Edition will fix these problems or OUP will make an update to this (5th) Edition?Again, I would love to see an update of this with all verse references/cross-references hyperlinked, like in the NABRE noted above, and with improved navigation, with a real table of contents including links for individual chapters within books. Also the verse citations in the introductions/essays should also be hyperlinked. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. Would be nice to see an update to this kindle volume.(Again, re the NABRE: It stands for New American Bible Revised Edition - it's the Bible used for liturgy in the Roman Catholic Church in the US (you can take a look at the text and notes for free on the USCCB web site, to see what it's like) - it contains most of the "apocrypha" you would find in this 5th Ed. NOAB, plus, in my opinion, useful notes and commentary, from a mainstream Catholic viewpoint, and very useful (and ALWAYS hyperlinked) citations and cross-references to really help you see how various parts of the Bible are related (and quickly jump around by pressing the links and then the back (<-) button), it's especially useful to see/understand connections between the Old Testament and New Testament. I think anyone interested in a kindle Bible should get a copy of it - see ASIN: B0054SLCOQ.)ALSO -- If you don't really need the annotations in this 5th Ed. NOAB, another NRSV with all the same apocrypha is available from HarperOne (ASIN: B003YUCE98). It is a very nicely done kindle book, with excellent navigation, links where you would expect them, fully functional table of contents, chapter links at the start of books, etc. And it also has the nice feature of chapter/section headings (descriptive titles of what follows, e.g., "The Parable of the Sower" at the start of Mark, ch. 4), unlike - it seems - all Bibles produced by OUP.

I really like this translation of the Bible and also enjoy all the notes printed on the bottom half of each page. this is excellent for studying. I compared quite a few NRSV Bibles trying to decide which to get. I wanted to get something good for studying with thorough notes. Personally I liked this Bible better than the Harper Collins Study Bible because these notes felt more accessible and more useful for my studying. I don't have any formal religious education; I am merely interested in understanding my faith better through studying the Bible. I feel this Bible suited this purpose very well. I took off one star because the pages are so thin it is sometimes a bit hard to read, as you are trying to read one line and can see a good amount of the backside of the page through it. I understand they are trying to cram an extreme amount of writing into this book and don't want it to be too thick, but personally this seemed a little too thin since it was to the point of being a little hard for me to read. (And I have better-than-average vision.)

***Updated Review: 18.Dec.2018****[So far so good, I keep learning and growing.]BINDING (One big "Why" this new version was needed):This new version, at first glance does not seem to have changed drastically when I compared it to the 4th. I want to point out that it's binding has been reinforced to correct the major flaw the 4th had (it would rip from the spine; you could tell it was a badly constructed); Now, the glue binding has been sewn which has definitely improved it's sturdiness. I've not gone through the whole of it, but most probably this was the chief reason for a new edition. I know how frustrating that is, mine (4th), ripped after two months in. But now the 5th has come!CONTENT:The introductory essays at the beginning of each book have remained the same, except for some minor editing that I've noticed so far. Comments at the foot of every page are marvellous. If you want a new perspective on every book that is an evidence-based critical analysis this is the bible for you. It provides different perspectives without diminishing the Bible's credibility. That is precisely why I favour this study bible more than the Harper Collins Study Bible. A version in which the authors appallingly downgrade the Bible's religious importance to a fictional book. Which, for me, it is a drawback. I do understand, this approach is used in Divinity schools; but the authors kept in mind that lay readers would seek and Oxford Bible in an attempt to better understand the Scriptures. And that, I liked.AS A RESOURCE:The Oxford's Annotated Bible offers a historic/preterist view (one does not have to agree with all of provided content). Something I found highly informative was current and past theories as to why it is possible for books to have been edited or had multiple authors instead of the widely held beliefs taught in church. Or better put: the theological approach to the study of the Bible. BUT, is not done without disrespecting one's beliefs. I feel many academic books do a fine job in that regard. It is an honest and serious approach to enhance the scope for the reader. My devotionals have thus become intellectual and spiritual experiences. I enjoy every contributor's commentaries, because they put into context every book's contemporary politics. The reader has a better grasp of the political background that may or may not influenced a book's contents: some were destroyed and rewritten—edited too—over hundreds of years. The NRSV is a magnificent translation in itself. Now add Oxford's reputation and deep academic tradition to it and voilà : That is how the The Oxford Annotated Bible was born.BOTTOM LINE:I highly recommend this study Bible. if you desire to nourish your thirst for knowledge, then, this will be a great resource for you.Arrivederci!

Excellent study bible. The navigation on the Kindle version could be improved, but I have found it much more useful since discovering that tapping the chapter or verse numbers will pull up the footnote box allowing quicker access to the annotations. Perhaps I am still missing something but there does not appear to be a quick way to navigate a list of chapters or verses for the individual books. Despite the less than perfect navigation I am glad to have it on my Kindle reader.

There is simply no way one can select a specific book, chapter and verse of the bible. For instance, if you wanted to read Isaiah 55:11, you can select Isaiah 55:11, you have start at chapter 1 and then continue to page all the way to chapter 55. This is far too time consuming.

This author can certainly write stories. The pace is engrossing, the descriptions of the locations vivid and the characters well formed. The reasons why I deduct a star are a) Because there are parts where the action becomes too much, stretching credulity too far. And b) The ending is too inconclusively predictable and comes up too fast. If you like a good story, though, Marius Gabriel will not disappoint and does not with the Seventh Moon, the title of which I am still unable to connect with the book, but don't let that put you off.

This is my first Marius Gabriel book. When I saw the number of titles published by this author, I hoped that I’d found another writer to follow. I have!I’m not much of a genre reader, because I do like the characters I undertake a journey with in a book to be well-developed – I want a relationship with them.I also want a novel to teach me something: about history, human nature, the supernatural, the world…anything that will leave me feeling better informed.Despite the above, I am uncompromising when it comes to the basic requirement of a novel: it must be a good story. The plot must be well developed; the action must be at a good pace; I must feel that I do not want to miss a day in my reading, so eager am I to unravel the secret woven into its pages. Finally, in addition to all the above, if an author is able to create a mood, a sense of time and place, through the use of patient, poetic prose, than I am perfectly satisfied. My reading experience could not be any better. The Seventh Moon, by Marius Gabriel, fulfilled every one of my requirements for a perfectly crafted novel. I’ll be back.

Very well written. A lot of interesting information about the Vietnam war that I never knew intermingled with a great story of love and loss. Good characters and lots of action.

This book was as new experience for me. I generally don't like fantasy, but I did fall in love with these characters. This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Gabriel, and I marvel at the imagination that a lot of these authors have. It is a very different, and great read. I'm going on to another of book shortly

He is really a good writer. The storyline s far fetched, but it really kept my interest! What I didn't like were the three or four descriptive sex scenes. To me, that takes away from the story. But it was good. Whether or not I will read more, I don't know. I will have to reD the reviews first.

This is one of the most intriguing stories I have ever read. Clive and Francine were two amazing people and the book impossible to lay down. Thanks

I just recently discovered Marius Gabriel"s novels and, while I haven't read them all as yet, this one is definitely my favorite so far. The story line moved back and forth in time with ease and proper coordination. I cared about both of the main protagonists and found that the author's imagery caused me to clearly picture the various settings in my mind. A good story - interesting characters - an exciting climax.

What an awesome storyteller. Read nonstop until the end. Really hope there is another book to this story. Please consider writing it.

I bought this book out of appreciation for the 2008 edition signed-out from the local library, which was impressive. The author offers insightful, soul searching questions that should be answered that ensure the new business entrepreneur will not be venturing forward without a solid plan and expectation. I need this new edition to keep close at hand while my "business thinking and attitude" is being formed, for which the book definitely provides the guidance and illustrations. Yes, I would definitely recommend this book.

In general, Nolo press writes the best Pro-per books available for the layman. I've been using them for over thirty years, still do, and have a complete library of their publications. They've never let me down as to quality, completeness, and accuracy.

How to Write a Business Plan really got me thinking about many things I didn't realize was important when starting a business. The author uses an easy to follow writing style and gives real life stories to help you understand what he is trying to convey. It is not written just for the business owner who is trying to get funding but for the new or want to be business owner as well. It's not the cure all book for business plans but it's the best help I've gotten so far. In the end you'll be glad you bought it.

This is a great book. I had purchased this book with others, at a time before I re-enrolled in class for business. The old MIT book, business plans that make $$$ should be a supplement when purchasing this book. You want to write your plan yourself and avoid pre-generated forms. This will at least help you until you take a few entrepreneurial classes.

Good if you are writing a business plan for the first time. It is kind of like a Business Plans for Dummies book, simple, to the point, and does not cover any grey area.

It has good info in it but if I wasn't taking it for a class I probably wouldn't have gotten it. There is one with the CD in it which is better.

This book helped me easily write my business plan. If you're new to business and need a business plan, this is a great resource.

This is a handy book for cleaning supply recipes and hints. I wish more had been said about some of the products listed being tested on animals, since that is about 90% of the reason I want to go green in my cleaning. In some cases this issue was addressed, but my concern is that if animals are tortured to prove the safety of a product, I'd rather not use the product anyway. But, with some of the recipes for supplies it is obvious that the product would not harm humans or animals unduly, so those are the ones I have chosen to use. They do a fine job. If you want to get rid of chemicals in your home this book can give alternatives. The price was too good to be true, but it would have been a bargain at a much higher price.

This book helps to accomplish the task of cleaning in a quick, easy way. The products are to buy are much cheaper than using commercial products. It is very easy to read and use. Green living should be quick and easy. I highly recommend it for those who are conscious of their environment and want ways to have a cleaner interior in their homes. I have used some of the solutions in the book and found they worked well.

Do not be fooled by the "for Dummies" marketing or nomenclature, this is a very reasoned and well thought out book. Though the main focus is on green cleaning, there are many ideas in this book which can help in green living and in minimizing our resource consumption.Going through this book helped me rethink several aspects of cleanliness that we often overlook - dust mites etc in your pillows/bedding and window curtains/drapes; the usefulness of sunlight as a cleaning agent; the deception behind the new car smell and so on. It gets these ideas across in a thoughtful manner, in going beyond the green washing that companies often use nowadays and understand the real impact of a consumer choice - Is a local non-organic apple better than an organic apple from far away Chile?More practically it offers several solutions for maintaining a healthy living condition. The chapter on home "recipes" for day to day cleaning agents is useful.

#3,788 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

What an amazing book! It is so easy for the child to interact with the story in finding the poop under the flap. My grandson could hardly wait until we turned the page to find the next poop. The illustrations are vivid and bright and the animals are easy to recognize. The dialog between the parents and the children is really, really good and the child grasps the idea that it's okay for Mom and Dad to ask about pooping. This is one book that every child should have in their own personal library. I'm glad I bought it for my 2 year old grandson!

I have never written an online review in my life but I cannot go another day without acknowledging the miracle that is THIS, THE MAGICAL UNICORN OF ALL POOP BOOKS. By far my best purchase of 2018, possibly in all of parenthood. My almost 3-year-old had struggled to successfully poop on the toilet for 9 fantastic months (so. much. laundry.). We'd tried EVERYTHING. Elsa underwear, stickers, relaxing music, candy, miralax, iPad on the potty, naked time, more candy, promising her a fish, promising her Disneyland(!?) - weak parent moment. But NOTHING could get this girl to poop on the potty, resulting in numberless treasure hunts to find the hidden turds throughout the house. Then, in one of those desperate maternal late-night google rampages (How to force kid to poop on potty), I purchased this book. And LO AND FREAKING BEHOLD. The very next day after we read this book together she pooped. On her own. IN THE BLESSED TOILET. And she has done so every single day since. THANK YOU JULIE MARKES you are my hero. This is now our most prized family heirloom and will probably be going with her to college in 15 years.

I'm not going to lie, I bought this book without high expectations of results. I have a 2 1/2 year old son who is potty training. He refused to go poop on a potty chair, instead he would hold it in until we left him to go to sleep at night, then would go in his pull up. It was getting so frustrating, so I ordered this book. He was so excited that it was his own special book and it was about poop. So, I made him a deal, I would read it to him, but he would have to sit on the potty chair and poop while I read it. Not even kidding, he pooped on the first day and hasn't gone back since. Of course, I have to have patience and read the book slowly and let him lift all the flaps and talk about all the pictures, but he loves this book and he's pooping on a toilet, so I really have no complaints.

This book has been an AMAZING tool in my 24 mo. old's potty training "tool box". We got it for him the week before we started potty training and started to read it ahead of out "Potty Party." He loves it and a week later still wants us to read it to him at least 3 times a day. When I ordered it, I did not realize this was a book with flaps to lift. My toddler thinks flap & pop-up books are the best, so the flaps were a great surprise. Also, the pages of the book are very thick and sturdy, which is great with a heavy handed toddler. It is not a board book, but the pages are very heavy stock and would be difficult to tear. The story line is great too, progressing from cute animal families to a human family, showing the kids and how/where they poop. The animal families include BOTH mommy and daddy animals. I thought this was nice, as I find most books are heavy on a mom influence, with little mention of dads. Overall, this is a truly wonderful book!

My son loved reading this while learning how to potty train. It was a great introduction into this life long skill. Each page has multiple flip-ups to help keep my child engaged and interacting with the story. He loved how each page had a parent and a few things to throw him off of finding the poop. The last page we both found hilarious and adorable. The author took a topic that is not usually talked about and made it cute, fun, engaging, and easy to talk about. Everyone does it and this book also helped talk about science like animals, habitats, and the digestive system. The book isn't long either. He liked reading it while using the restroom or right before bed. The drawings are vibrant and adorable, really showcasing the animals in their environments. The only draw back is if your child isn't ready for flip-up tabs then you have to watch them very closely. My son pulled about five off before I caught him in the act. Also, the pages or a little thicker than regular pages but not hard like a board book. We really enjoyed this book and all it had to offer.

This may be a good book for for a child about to potty train. However, I bought this for my daughter who is having withholding problems. This isn't a book to help with that. She likes the pictures and the flaps and we cheer when we find the poop, but it isn't helping me in any way.

We have been struggling to get our 3 year son to poop on the potty. He has only gone poop once on the potty since we have actively been trying (about 1 month). So I decided to order a "poop" book. We got the book this afternoon during his nap, shortly after his nap he pooped in his underwear. So we sat down and put his poop in the toilet like we usually do so he knows where the poop belongs. We also sat down and read this book, Where's the Poop? He then sat down and "read" his book and looked at the pictures. Our son is typically a once a day pooper, but this evening he came running in the room saying "potty" he then proceeded to take his underwear off and sit on the potty and poop!!! He did this unprompted. He went from 0 to 60 in less than a day. I honestly think it stems from reading this book.

For anyone else, Where the Wild Things Bite would be a four star book, but Molly Harper is one of my favorite authors, and she just didn't quite pull this one off with her usual skill. As much as it pains my heart, and without spoilers, here's what went wrong. We spend a whole lot of time in the h's head, so much so that the H doesn't really get fleshed out and their attraction doesn't quite seem possible.A pretty serious plot point involving prescription drugs is brought up twice then glossed over. Let's say the person involved would have been sick, possibly incapacitated, but Ms. Harper just tossed that aside. Probably best not to bring it up.Timeline issues. For instance, the h eating something, then not having eaten, then saying she was full.Believability issues. I'm willing to read about almost anything as long as you make it believable. I did not believe the h could have survived much of what she goes through, which makes me go, "Huh?" which takes me out of the story. Then there is a big plot point, a very serious one, and it weirdly doesn't get addressed in any realistic way. It's just shrugged off as, "oh well, yeah that was pretty bad, har har." Wth?While I enjoyed Wild Things, it didn't pull well together to find that "extremely wacky yet still possible" tone of her other books. Even so, I quite liked these characters and hope to see them in a future story. Conclusion? A bit of a miss for Ms. Harper who can do, and usually does, much better. But Molly Harper books are like pizza: even when they're not great they're still pretty darn good.

Anna is sort of a hermit that lives for her job surrounded by old books, until a very valuable one comes to her and Anna believes it is her duty to give it back by hand to its rightful owner and not by courier. So even though she is an agoraphobe, germophobe and a lot more adjectives that end in "phobe", she bravely gets on a plane to Half-Moon Hollow to deliver that precious book to Jane Jameson. And then her plane crashes.I could not put this book down, but I am afraid I was expecting more - probably because whole idea of having a germophobe lost in the woods promised a lot of laugh out moments, but failed short. They basically walked and slept, where were the savage animals, the lost tribes, eating disgusting things, hazardous survival ideas, meeting amazons,...? All those absolutely ridiculous but perfectly plausible scenes to this sort of book? I enjoyed the story, I liked how the main character is so like Jane but also very different, how she grows and fights but I was left wanting more.

REVIEW PROVIDED BY: KellyNUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2As always I am blown away by Ms. Harper’s ability to write a story that makes me fall in love with her writing, her characters and the world she has created all over again.Where The Wild Things Bite we get to meet up Finn Palmeroy again. If you may have recalled in The Single Undead Moms Club I wanted badly to stab Finn with a fork. I disliked him greatly. But in WTWTB Finn redeems himself..... Kinda. I mean I guess he does. Or does he? Anna is great. I love her knowledge of so many random facts about surviving in the wilderness. She is one tough cookie and she puts up with Finn. I hope that we will see more of Anna & Finn in future stories. I can’t wait to see what/who is next in Half-Moon Hollow. As always I let the amazingly talented Amanda Ronconi read this story to me. I absolutely love Amanda ability to bringing Molly’s characters to life for me. And it is always fun when you are in the car and you are laughing so hard that the people next to you look at you like your are crazy. I look forward to our next audio meeting Ms. Ronconi!!!Disclaimer:I received a complimentary copy of this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. I also purchased an audio copy of this book from Audible.com. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

I absolutely loved this book! cannot wait for the second one. Molly Harper has a HUGE knack for story telling and i own every one of her books. in this story, Nell (the main character) comes alive in a short story with the Jane Yellowrock series but is expanded here. She has a very small part in "Off the Grid" in the Jane Yellowrock series but this story is all hers! She lives alone in a cabin, takes care of herself and even gains a power she did not know she had. I highly recommend this story to all women and to those who want to empower their daughters. Even to men who think that women cannot be as strong as they are.

I adore Molly Harper and Half Moon Hollow!! I did miss a few of the series regulars in this book, but Finn and Anna made the story great! I did feel that there were a few issues with continuity, especially in the last quarter of the book, but it was easy enough to figure out what was going on.As I've come to expect from Ms Harper, this book was filled with action and humor. I'd recommend this book to any fan of PNR books. I'd normally warn that you need to read the whole series, though I always recommend that, but I feel you could read this installment of the series without feeling lost. There are small references to the earlier books, but nothing that would keep you from enjoying this one!!

I really enjoyed the main characters in this book. It is set in the same world as Molly's other HMH books, but the characters are mostly on their own through the book, so you don't necessarily need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. Anna is much stronger than she thinks she is at the beginning and I really enjoyed seeing how she grows, but Finn also grows up a bit. There is one completely terrifying scene in it, or at least I think so as a PhD student, but most of it is fun and Molly's usual combination of sassy, hilarious and a bit sexy. Can't say enough good things about the book or the author.

Review

"[Merkin narrates] with insight, grace and excruciating clarity, in exquisite and sometimes darkly humorous prose . . . For all its highly personal focus, [This Close to Happy] is an important addition to the literature of mental illness." ―Andrew Solomon, The New York Times Book Review (cover review)"I will not be the last to thank Ms. Merkin for resisting this desire [to die] long enough to give us what is one of the most accurate, and therefore most harrowing, accounts of depression to be written in the last century . . . Ms. Merkin speaks candidly and beautifully about aspects of the human condition that usually remain pointedly silent." ―John Kaag, Wall Street Journal"Wry, self-aware . . . a work of lacerating intelligence about a condition that intellect cannot heal." ―The New Yorker"[A] triumph on many levels . . . As insightful and beautifully written as it is brave . . . This Close to Happyearns a place among the canon of books on depression . . . books that offer comfort to fellow depressives and elucidation for those lucky enough to have dodged its scourge." ―Heller McAlpin, Washington Post"[A] stunning self-portrait." ―Christian Lorentzen, New York“A hybrid of memoir, case study, and confession, which joins such classics as Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind and Andrew Solomon’s The Noonday Demon in the contemporary literature of depression. . . Merkin has written [a book] that will illuminate, challenge, and possibly even console.” ―Adam Kirsch, Tablet"[This Close to Happy is] a testament to Merkin's commitment to capturing the grim distortions that depression can produce. . . This Close to Happy is more than a memoir of mental illness. Merkin is a good writer―perceptive, provocative, relentlessly interrogative of her own experience―and despite her difficult subject matter, she does, in this memoir, what good writers do: she sends urgent, cogent dispatches from another world, a protracted battlefield that we might not otherwise know about." ―Lisa Fetchko, Los Angeles Review of Books"[A] compelling chronicle . . . Merkin's work is unique in describing the mundane burden of a deeply felt and closely observed life lived with depression . . . [H]er account of depression is both personal, literary and, at the same time, existential." ―Tom Teicholz, Forbes“Merkin is a wonderful writer whose keen eye for detail and human foibles enables her to brilliantly light her subject. . . . In page after page, she delivers elegant, evocative prose.” ―Psychology Today"This Close to Happy is as illuminating and hard to put down as it is painful." ―People "Merkin is a fine stylist . . . She has at her disposal wide-ranging allusions, and she draws on poetry with a charming ease, a frankness that assumes her reader’s sophistication, even as she capably holds the reader’s hand and clarifies the relevance of a particular reference.” ―Forward"Daphne Merkin exhibits shocking honesty in allowing readers to look into her journey. . . Her depth of writing experience on the topic comes through in emotion-packed prose . . . This book offers the education necessary for readers need to follow depression as it rises and falls in one woman’s life, as well as in the lives of thousands of others." ―Wyatt Massey, America Magazine“Merkin’s deeply intimate account of living with clinical depression is illuminating, heartbreaking, and powerfully written. With lively prose and shrewd observations . . . Merkin’s exploration into her complicated yet unconditional devotion to her mother is rendered with compassion and profound perception. Merkin eloquently blends the personal with the researched; her intellectual tenacity and emotional rawness impress as much as they entertain. This book is a wonderful addition to literature about the unrelenting battle against depression.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Dark thoughts hover over virtually every page of this mesmerizing memoir, and yet there is also the very real possibility of hope. . . Merkin’s exceptional book belongs on the same shelf as such classics as William Styron’s Darkness Visible (1990) and Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind (1995).” ―Booklist (starred review)“[Merkin] has a signature method to her writing, one that exuberantly crosshatches high- and lowbrow, and one that reveals and protects in equal measure.” ―Bookforum “Opening This Close to Happy was like getting a long letter from my best friend at sleepaway camp. I had no idea it was this bad for you, was my first thought, and then, we have both been so paralyzed by grief. This is why we all feel so lonely right now―the longing, the depression, the comedy of it all, wrapped up in a story about sex and Judaism, our mothers. I felt so whole when snuggling up alone with Merkin’s brilliant, full-of-feeling masterpiece. I flew through it and hated to let go when it ended.” ―Jill Soloway“Fierce, clear-eyed, and beautifully honest, Daphne Merkin’s is an essential voice. This Close to Happy, a lucid and elegantly written account of her lifelong struggles withdepression, unsettles and illuminates in equal measure. This is an important book.” ―Claire Messud“If the face presented to the world is a mask to protect ourselves, Daphne Merkin bravely removes hers, revealing the truth of herself, courageously exploring, seeking―and sometimes even finding―the hope that glimmers at the end of the tunnel. Please read as soon as possible.” ―Gloria Vanderbilt“This beautifully written tale of Daphne Merkin’s depressive demons is by far the most accurate and human account of depression and its impact that I have ever read. I highly recommend it, both to those in the mental health professions and to those who care about the suffering of their loved ones.” ―Glen O. Gabbard, M.D.“The greatness of this book is in the way Merkin takes the measure of the adversary.” ―Peter Sacks“D. W. Winnicott wrote that depression is the fog over the battlefield. In this extraordinarily lucid and moving book, Daphne Merkin illuminates the dark and desperate battle that depression can be. This is a book for all those who know nothing about depression and for those who know too much.” ―Adam Phillips “This Close to Happy belongs on the shelf with William Styron's Darkness, Visible and Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon. It brings a stunningly perceptive voice to the forefront of the conversation about depression, one that is both reassuring and revelatory.” ―Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice"This Close to Happy is honest, fearless in the way we have come to expect from Daphne Merkin, and, as a bonus, frankly informative. From Merkin we get the inside view of navigating a chronic psychiatric illness to a realistic outcome. As she writes, 'the opposite of depression is not a state of unimaginable happiness, but a state of relative all-right-ness.' For some, that insight alone will speak volumes. Her candor discussing the fears, tribulations, and triumphs of a lifetime of treatment will be valuable for anyone who loves someone with depression but makes necessary reading for the mental health professionals on the other side of the couch." ―Harold S. Koplewicz, M.D., President, Child Mind Institute

Brilliant, scathing, heartbreaking and raw. This is the most powerfully honest book on depression and child abuse that I have ever read. Merkin's bereft childhood of brutality and lack seems to be the fertile ground that created her despondency and the tenacious, pervasive longing for suicide. Her parents appear blatantly psychologically disordered, meting out damage as casually as one would order lunch. Merkin is by turns, attached to, and repelled by, a vicious mother, who seems both stunningly narcissistic and psychopathic. I was frustrated by Merkin's struggle to detach from her mother, much in the same way that abused wives return to their abusers, expecting different outcomes. Merkin was drowning in depression, yet repeatedly returned to her parents seeking solace, approval and a revisionist history that neither parent was emotionally equipped to provide. The repeated returns to the abusive environment only seemed to exacerbate the depression and parental control, all in a continuous self-perpetuating loop. I rooted for Merkin to cut the toxic ties in favor of mental health and self actualization, but her journey to contentment was more circuitous. I applaud Merkin's ability to craft riveting and beautiful prose from the wreckage and horror of her early years. This book is both difficult to read at times, and equally hard to put down. My hope is that Merkin never chooses to succumb to the lure of suicide, but instead continues to write, to enjoy simple pleasures and allows herself to heal. A highly recommended read.

I quite loved Merkin's literary asides, I am a reader as well. This book definely brought me into depression, a mood disorder I don't happen to have but the writing here is somehow contagious. I didn't mind that terrible feeling as it lifted when I finished the book. Merkin's strength here is showing in blazingly purposeful detail: The parents, the other kids, and her childhood. If one image stands out for me it is of her Jewish mother drawing Nazi imagery on her arms. I mean, these parents should have been fined, in my honest opinion. My confusion lies in how do the author become happier? Was it the pain pills she mentions. Or the small home on Long Island that she rents, or was it having the energy to have friends visit? Her daughter's love? Her love for her daughter? I am sure all those helped but the leap from abject misery to 'close to happy' wasn't clear to me and so must affect many depressives looking for concrete answers. Merkins writes so well but what she left out is telling. 4 big stars

I read this while severely depressed and found it helpful. This isn't the point of the book—it's a beautifully-written, insightful, firsthand account of someone's lifelong struggle with depression—but as I imagine a large number of people who pick up this book will, like me, be looking for some insight into their own situation, I'll say that I, for one, found some. I, like Daphne, sometimes struggle to accept depression as an illness as opposed to a personal failing, even as I live it, and reading someone else's honest account—experiencing empathy and finding many shared experiences along the way—encouraged me to be a bit kinder to myself.

I'm not quite sure what the author was trying to do as the text jumped between battling depression and her unhappy childhood without getting to a point. I'm not sure there is a there there to this story or why this author's story was chosen.

I purchased this book because I was in a deep clinical depression - a battle I - like the author - have fought since childhood. Reading how others - especially fellow authors - manage their depression is usually insightful and helpful to me.Sadly, this book did nothing to help me to cope with my bout with depression. In fact, it just made it worse, exacerbated by the fact that I had wasted money on this book. Like the other one-star reviewers, I needed to skip ahead - a LOT.Merkin's style of writing might be okay for a New Yorker article. But slogging through nearly 300 pages about emotions written in a journalistic style is too much for this reader. And the psychiatrists Merkin saw certainly did not help her to put her childhood behind her. Sixtysomething is way to old to still be blaming one's parents.

This memoir is the most moving, brave and brilliant book I have ever read about depression. Heartbreaking and harrowing, THIS CLOSE TO HAPPY, A Reckoning with Depression is, remarkably, empty of any bitterness. There are moments of aching tenderness: climbing on her mother's lap as she (her mother) sang in a beautiful voice to the children on the one night a week she put them to bed; waiting by the elevator for her mother to visit at the hospital; an impossible longing for mother love. Daphne Merkin dazzles with her intelligence, wry humor and honesty. A hugely important book for anyone who knows the pain of depression, described with great precision and understanding, or who has a friend of family member going through the hell of depression.

It was riveting and disturbing and beautifully written. I felt very close to her and then a little impatient and wanted to fix her and give her some suggestions, like quit already with the Freudian analysis and try some cognitive techniques. But then I'm worried about her and not objectively observing her writing. Definitely pulled me in, argued wit her that my mother was worse. I would have liked to get closer in to her mind set when she was in the depths of depression,,what sort of thoughts, and I thought she left that kind of vague.Beautiful book, had to be so hard to write, but rewarding.

One of the three best personal descriptions of serious mood disorders for the lay public and professionals (Styron's "Darkness Visible", and K. Redfield-Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind" are the others). A must read for those who suffer from severe depression, or bipolar disorder, their friends, family, and mental health professionals who treat them.
