About the Author

Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered. The art was first-rate. The story was bad. Where the Amazing Screw-On Head was inspired craziness, this was uninspired craziness. This is a big surprise, coming from Mignola. It's a shame because that art deserved a good story.

Mignola has a talent for finding exceptional artists to help bring his work to life, and Warwick Johnson Cadwell is certainly an artist to watch. He illustrates with a voice and personality that brings magic to his storytelling. If you like strong illustration and strong story-telling, this is the book for you.

As a big Mike Mignola fan, I had to preorder this as soon as it was announced. I received it last night and immediately sat down and read away. It's a nice, short read that's interesting the entire way through. Mignola did a good job of taking a theme that people use pretty regularly and make it his own. I particularly liked the twist at the end. I will say that it felt a little too short in my opinion.

But it is still functional, telling a good story very well, with a lovely mignola ending. I recommend it, the wacky art being the only thing keeping it from 5 stars.

This is a really cool, short but interesting, vampire story. The illustrations are humorous more than edgy. Good quality all around and suitable for all ages.

Wickedly fun in some places, but ultimately seems too short to really dive into the world and get to know the characters. It leaves you wanting more, but as of now it will be remembered as a pointless yet fun ride.It doesn’t seem like a return to form for Mignola.

Purchased to surprise my husband and he was delighted. Interesting read and good art work.

One of the scariest books ever, afraid to read again even though it was a pulse pounding thrill ride, filled with the stuff you wish was in Hellboy more, but this is definitely not Hellboy. I would recommend for a mature audience.

I was first curious about this epic when I read that Sri David Hawkins, in his Power vs Force book, using kinesiology, had given this classic a fantastic rating, 810, a very high consciousness rating, higher than the Bible. So I was wondering why? How could it be? I found out when I read William Buck's retelling of the story, but only because I had this question in mind from the beginning. Because, the thing is, most people reading this, are going to just read it for the story on the surface, and look no farther. They will just read it as the fairy tale that it is, the life of Rama, and see it as no more than this, and otherwise irrelevant. But looking deeper I discovered that this is much more than a fairy tale. It is an allegory, an allegory of ourselves. And this is hugely interesting and relevant. We ourselves are the monster here, potentially; and we are the Divine here, in battle with our monster selves, and it is a life battle. And Sita? This is the rub for most Westerners. Reading the book simply as a superficial story, Rama, the Divine, comes off very badly. But discovering that this is an allegory, we begin to see that this ending is very appropriate. Sita stands for Nature, Prakriti. She is of, and from, the earth. She is born from the earth and returns to the earth, Mother Earth. Rama is spirit itself and must remain Spirit; Spirit and Nature must part company. That is the spiritual endeavor, and that is what we have. Rama and Sita, Spirit and Nature parting company leaving Spirit alone for the remaining years. Very appropriate and how the story should end: Rama vindicated and Divine. Seen in this way, we see that calling Rama, Rama, the mantra, means we are calling our deeper Self, with a capital S. Calling the Reality of our Selves. The Divine Self kills the small monster self, the ego self. And what could be greater than seeing this epic in this way. It's all about ourselves.

William Buck offers readers a wonderfully authentic but Western version of one of the greatest works of Indian literature. He captures the essence of the tale in a dramatic and poetic retelling of this age-old story. It is not a translation as such, but a deeply illuminating re-expression of this powerful allegory of the struggle between good and evil, between gods and demons.

I initially read this for a class in college. This is by far one of the most awesome (in awe insipiring sense) stories I have ever had the please of reading. The fantastical and absurd happenings in this story are most captivating. The imagination of this culture is mesmerizing. Thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so that I lost my original years ago and found the same one here. Btw, this translation is really easy to follow and understand. I'm sure there's others out there but Buck's interpretation is smooth.

Best version of the Ramayana since Valmiki's 3 volumn set, which is lush but tedious. Wm Buck tells it beautifully with more detail than you find in ordinary translations of the Tulsidas version.

Expensive but worth the money.

Item arrived promptly and am very excited to read it. I have read William Buck's Mahabharata and he is an excellent writer. Love reading Indian books in a way that relates to today's reader.

The Ramayana is exceedingly good and this was a good and inexpensive translation. However, I should point out that this is printed in prose rather than poetic form.

As a hardcore Nancy Drew fan and late bloomer into the world of comics and graphics novels, I wholeheartedly recommend Goldie Vance. This is the second volume chronicling Goldie's adventures as she solves mysteries out of the hotel that she and her father work at. While the first volume would, obviously, help you understand what is going on, I'm not sure I would call it a 100% pre-requisite. The art is absolutely gorgeous and I found myself taking longer than necessary to appreciate certain panels. Everything about this volume, from the storyline to the artwork, is absolutely awesome. If you are a mystery-lover nervous about taking the plunge into the world of comics, this is a great place to get your feet wet.

SO GOOD.

If you're a fan of Lumberjanes, but want something with fewer supernatural elements and a few more Nancy Drew-esk mysteries, you'll enjoy Goldie Vance. This is such a fun series with great characters and great diversity that's set in Florida (in the 60s? possibly, I'm not sure) at the hotel that Goldie's dad owns.Boom! Box continues to put out fantastic content, and as always I enjoyed every page. This is a perfect series for middle-grade readers but also still great for young adults and adults.
