#3,691 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is the second book in this series and I think I like it better than the first. Avery is on the run from her ex and his friend. Trying to be a phone sex operator didn't exactly work, except for one call that was misdialed. THe voice was something that she couldn't forget and when the caller gives her his name and where he lives, her decision is made.Grayson is the sheriff in town and enjoys going to the local BDSM club. Problem is he can't see to get a certain woman out of his mind. When their paths cross, she knows him but he doesn't know her. What follows is a wonderful story of Grayson introducing Avery to the delights of BDSM. But her past is still following her and due to a jealous woman wanting Grayson to herself, is about to catch up with her. What happens? Can Grayson save her? Well, you need to get the book to find out. I love the flow of this story and it's very easy to fall for the male characters, all of them. LOL Now to wait for Connor's book.

I enjoyed this second book in the series Cowboy Doms. You do not need to read the first book to enjoy this one, but it does help. Avery is an IT tech at a Chicago Police Department and she comes into information about two of the detectives stealing evidence (money, drugs, etc) When she realizes that they are willing to kill her to keep her quiet, she flees. She tries being a phone sex operator, but she has no experience with sex. Grayson calls the phone line by accident and he ends up giving her pointers. He then invites her to his town if she ever needs help. And, of course, she does. What she doesn’t know is that Grayson is a dom and he wants her. She shows up in Willow Springs, Montana and the story starts. There is an eventual HEA and it is a fun ride there.I enjoyed this second story in the series and I look forward to more books in the series. I give this an enthusiastic 5 stars!

On our return trip to Willow Springs, we meet Avery a woman on the run wondering who to trust. Is she a fool for thinking she has found that someone because of his voice? Since there are a few "voices" that make me tingle and sigh, who am I to judge? Will Avery trust Grayson before jealousy and the past catches up with her? I jumped at the chance to read this new book by Ms. Wane. From the time I downloaded it until the final page(two hours later) I was completely lost in the story. Wonder which Dom is the next to fall?I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Avery is a computer nerd working for the Chicago police department when she discovers her policeman boyfriend is crooked, and may harm her. She runs to Montana where she meets Grayson, the local sheriff – and someone she had once spoken to on the telephone. An affair develops – with plenty of spankings as Grayson is a Dom – and it is interesting, although a bit rushed at the end, as to how the story works itself out. Both Grayson and Avery are well described and highly intelligent characters – however, I thought the book would have been strengthened with a little more development in the conclusion of the problems.

Avery and Grayson are people you want to meet and be friends with. You could feel the fear and uncertainty. The joy and happiness. Thank you for another fabulous read!

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the second book in the Cowboy Doms series. In this book, Grayson is the sheriff and is partners with his two best friends in The Barn, a BDSM club. Grayson is a dom and he has no interest in having his own sub, he would prefer to play with the subs at the club. One night while Grayson was making a phone call, he dialed the wrong number and got a phone sex worker. Avery was running from her ex-boyfriend and his partner, who were Chicago cops and were dirty. Avery had the evidence and was running to try and get somewhere safe until she could turn them in. Avery was really bad at the phone sex job and she begged Grayson to help her. Grayson loved how submissive the mystery woman on the phone was and he talked her into submitting to him. Grayson suspected she was in trouble and told her to look him up if she wanted help. Avery headed to see Grayson to she if she could trust him and get help. When Avery showed up in town, she managed to get a job at the local diner. When Grayson came into the diner, she met him and there was an instant attraction. Grayson felt he knew Avery, but couldn't remember meeting her. When Avery came to the club as a guest, Grayson wanted to show her around the club. Avery allowed Grayson to show her around the club and introduce her to the lifestyle. Grayson was becoming attached to Avery, but knew she had secrets and wanted her to tell him everything. I really loved this book. I loved Grayson, i thought he was a great guy who really wanted to protect Avery. I think Grayson accepted Avery was his from the beginning and loved her. Avery knew she could trust Grayson, but she was scared about what would happen after she told him the truth. I loved this book and can't wait for the next one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book is an enticing blend of romance, suspense, humor and hot BDSM scenes. The story line is well written, grabbed my attention and kept me hooked until the last page was read. I liked Grayson and Avery so much! It was supremely easy to fall for Such a swoon worthy hero. Grayson was 100% dominate male, caring, protective, clever and sweet. Avery was a good person, had a huge heart and had a core of steel she never knew was there. It was delightful to witness the evolution of the relationship between these two from just two unknown voices on the phone to soulmates. Beautiful, exciting and spicy, this book delivers on every way. This is my independent, impartial review.

Awesome! 20 years ago, I used to listen to this (cassette at the time) album to fall asleep every night. I bought it to share with my daughter. Funny, silly poems performed with catchy tunes and comedic voices. I purchased the book as well, poems in the book do not follow the same order as the electronic version, but a wonderful option to read at home or listen in the car. Kudos to Prelusky for making poetry fun and silly for kids and adults alike!

I had this book from when I was really young, and it stuck with me for a long time. I still have no clue what happened to the copy I owned, but I still remember some of the poems in it. Great to see it again! I decided to use it form my Children's Literature class. This can be a great addition to other poem books, like Seuss and Silverstein. I remember giving this to my teacher to read to us. I remember the kids in the class loving it jsut as much as I did. Ah, such fond memories from a single book! The poems inside are silly, unique and appropriate for even young-aged kids. A must if your kids like to read. Highly recommended for a classroom collection, too.

I had used this book years ago in an elementary library instruction program. When I recently quoted "Homework, Oh Homework, I Hate You, You Stink" to my 5-yr-old grandson, he asked me if he could have the book. I gave it to him for his birthday and he loves reading from it before bed.

I had to buy this for my niece after I found myself starting a poem from the book and not remembering how to finish it. Imagine that - it's been at least 16 years since I had this book, yet I could still recite stanzas at will. How frustrating it was not to have all of them!Jack Prelutsky is one of the best children's poets out there. You MUST have this book - indoctrinate your kid in the joys of reading poetry aloud when they're young, and you'll never have to unteach them "poetry is boring" when they're older.

I loved this book as a 2nd grader and bought it for my nephew who is in the 2nd grade. I hope he loves it like I did.

Quick: What are the definitions of the following words: mandibular, souvlaki, mangosteen, and diatonic? If you buy this book for bedtime reading to a young child, be prepared. In the product listing, it's suggested for age 5 and up. I bought this for my poetry-loving 6-year-old. We introduced her to the world of Jack Prelutsky some time ago withRead-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young. She loves that book. Although she has asked us to re-read selections from this book a couple of times, I can tell this is one we should have waited a bit for. Plus, this book has plenty of poems with words like "ugly", "mean" and "hate". We try to monitor our kids use of those words, so we've had some explaining to do. So besides the age-appropriateness issue of this particular book, Prelutsky is a gift to children and to all of us who want children to truly explore the world of poetry. It's too bad some think that can happen by forcing them to read poetry that clearly wasn't written for children. This isn't my favorite of his works, but it's hard to be perfect every day. If you think your child will enjoy extra-silliness and big, colorful pictures, take a look at Be Glad Your Nose Is on Your Face: And Other Poems: Some of the Best of Jack Prelutsky

Great book of poetry for kids! Brings back memories!

Son asked me to buy him this book. His classroom had a copy. The poems are great for his age (10), whimsical, fun and with things he can relate to. Makes poetry appealing to him. His entire class loves this book.

Amazon.com Review

Some of Dr. Jack Kevorkian's "patients" traversed the continent seeking relief. Local prosecutors charged that Kevorkian was committing murder, not "medicide." When a court disagreed, the Michigan legislature passed a flawed law to thwart the retired pathologist. Suddenly, medically assisted suicide was out of the closet and onto every newscast. Written by a seasoned journalist who covered Kevorkian for the Detroit Free Press, this book exposes both the macabre and the merciful. Standing on either side are grandstanding attorneys, sanctimonious critics, devoted supporters and, keeping score, an often callous media horde. The patients/victims and their survivors, meanwhile, struggle to deal with untenable lives. Among those who kept appointments with Dr. Death is a young cancer victim who came to Detroit and died just as Michael Betzold sat down to write this book. Incredibly--without her knowledge that Betzold was covering the story, and without his knowledge of her impending death--medicide patient #15 was Betzold's first cousin and childhood friend.

From Publishers Weekly

Kevorkian, the retired pathologist who has helped 18 patients with terminal illnesses or chronic extreme pain to die since 1990, is now facing trial under Michigan's new law banning assisted suicide. In interviews with Detroit Free Press reporter Betzold ( End of the Line ), the doctor, son of immigrant Armenian parents who witnessed his own mother's agonizing death from cancer, states his case. Kevorkian denies belief in an afterlife, and considers his cause an ethical one. The author recounts the actual last moments of the dying patients who have turned to Kevorkian. His critics are vividly sketched: the medical establishment, anti-abortion activists and what Kevorkian calls a "barbaric religious clique." And we also hear from his staunch defenders, notably his attorney Geoffrey Fieger, the ACLU and the Hemlock Society. "It's unstoppable," says Kevorkian, "It may not happen in my lifetime, but my opponents are going to lose." The book may be intended as a pre-trial defense brief, but readers who are willing to hear Kevorkian out are given much to ponder. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The definitive treatment of the zealot who elevated the subject to national attention.

Michael Betzold is a reporter and covers the story and issues of Dr. Kvorkian from a reporters approach by covering the events and including various view points allowing the reader to make their own decision. The book begins with background information on Jack Kvorkian from childhood and personal interest. The story continues laying ground work of events that lead to Dr. Kvorkian's first assisted suicide patient. Then continues to detail the legal and political arena that covers the unanswerable question of personal choice in ending one's life. The complexity and sensitivity of the issue has left laws unmade, which allowed Dr. Kvorkian to continue to assist in 16 more suicides. The book describes each person who is assisted in their deaths by Dr. Kvorkian. Then goes on to provide view point information from the various group, including Right to Life, Hemlock Society, Medical Associations and Religious organizations. Each provide thought provoking ideals. The book is well written, percise, and informative. I had a hard time putting the book down. The topic is one that has effected or will effect each and everyone of us at some point in our lives. This book will leave you uncertain if Dr. Kvorkian was truly the angel of mery to his patients or zealot following his own mission.

Review

“Lively and learned . . . Brands has produced a narrative that pulsates vigorously . . . The three senators wear themselves out and all but die on the job, their respective causes still unresolved, their long public service having earned them fame, but not the political prize for which they most lusted: the presidency (though not for want of trying).” —Harold Holzer, Wall Street Journal   “A historical spellbinder . . . A lively, vivid, and thoroughly researched account of a time when discord gripped the nation and wouldn’t let go.” —David Holahan, Christian Science Monitor   “Brands’s easy prose and superior, simple organization makes this work an engrossing, entertaining, and educating read on issues important then that echo today in the modern debate on the limits of federal government power.” —Robert Davis, New York Journal of Books“They were called ‘The Great Triumvirate’—three senators whose rivalries, alliances, and work in the tumultuous battles of the 19th century profoundly influenced the course of American history. H. W. Brands tells the story of Clay, Calhoun, and Webster with verve and clarity, reminding us of a bygone age when giants truly walked the floor of the United States Senate.” —Jon Meacham, author of The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels   “H. W. Brands has brought us a searching and excellent account of three legendary Americans whose leadership and rivalries did so much to shape the period of our history between that of the Founders and the Civil War. Heirs of the Founders should remind those of our own time how important Clay, Calhoun, and Webster are to the nation we live in today.” —Michael Beschloss, author of Presidents of War   “H. W. Brands, with his characteristic combination of sweep and eye for detail, tells the story—always exciting, often inspiring, ultimately tragic—of the titans who tried to guide the handiwork of the Founding Fathers through the turbulent first half of the nineteenth century. He weaves a cautionary tale for our own time of troubles.” —Richard Brookhiser, author of John Marshall: The Man Who Made the Supreme Court"Brands uses the life stories of three consequential early-19th-century American politicians—all with unfulfilled aspirations to become president—to show how tensions inherent in the founding fathers’ vision of the country led to the calamity of the Civil War . . . This fascinating history illuminates rifts that still plague the country today."—Publishers Weekly"An engrossing and revealing account of personal rivalries that played out on a national scale."—Booklist

H.W. Brands is an excellent historian, highly skilled at researching a topic and at telling a tale in engaging, illuminating prose. This, his latest book, contains many of those elements, making it an enjoyable and informative read. But it is not without its problems. One inherent problem with a book such as "Heirs of the Founders" is that it focuses on the lives of three different men--Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. It is difficult enough to compile a biography of one individual in less than 400 pages, but Brands tells the reader about these three men in only 370 pages of text. Such an approach is bound to leave out much, and that is what keeps this good book from being a great one.For example, Brands says that Thomas Jefferson "rode the wave of opposition [to the Alien and Sedition Acts] into the White House . . ." But the Election of 1800, to which Brands is referring, was far more complex. Indeed, had there been no Three-Fifths Compromise, John Adams would have won the election outright. The compromise allowed southern states to count slaves as three-fifths of a person when determining the state's population and thus the number of representatives the state would get in the House. They would each get an equal number of electors. As it was, no candidate got a majority of electoral votes, sending the election into the House, which elected Jefferson. A simple sentence or two would have clarified the issue.Brands brings up the gag rule but does not explain what it was. He seems to assume his reader knows. The gag rule was a resolution in the House that tabled, without discussion, all petitions regarding slavery. But Brands doesn't tell us this.In addition, Brands makes no mention of Daniel Webster's affair with Sarah Goodrich, a young artist. The affair took place in the late 1820s, while Webster's wife was dying of stomach cancer back in Massachusetts. This behavior certainly gives an insight into Webster's character, but Brands seems to be in a hurry and so skips or glosses over many aspects of these three men and their times. In another example, Brands does not mention Henry Clay's most famous quote--"I'd rather be right than be president." Spoken in 1838, it was seen as sour grapes by many. Nor does he mention that Clay was an inveterate gambler. Or that he could, at times, be downright nasty. The fact that the book has fifty-nine chapters in 370 pages only adds to the rushed feeling of "Heirs of the Founders." What Brands has given us is good. But another hundred or so pages could have made it great.

H. W. Brands has written another superb volume, primarily relying upon the speeches, and written words of the “Heirs of the Founders” in their attempt to prevent the shattering of the Union. Henry Clay was determined to sail between the “Scylla of states’ rights and the Charybdis of rampant federalism”, a perilous choice that still has meaning for us today. He was guided by the realism of a resident of a border state: “A statesman did what he could in his country’s service, not what he would.” The ever more infamous John C. Calhoun; a man whose ambition was disguised as intellect, and believed that the institution of slavery was not a necessary evil; but in fact, a positive good that enabled a superior culture to thrive. Daniel Webster; a ‘Master of Persuasion’ who was weakened by an ever more strident and powerful abolitionist movement in Massachusetts that left diminishing room for compromise. This is the story of their last great work; the Missouri Compromise of 1850; the abomination of the Fugitive Slave Law which allowed the kidnapping and sale of free American citizens, and the compulsion of other Americans to cooperate with this act; as epitomized in tragedy of Solomon NorthrupTwelve Years a Slave. In retrospect we must balance the worth of a ‘compromise’ that gave us ten more years of national misery and the suffering of slavery against ten years in which the North became more industrialized and with an ever more increasing disparity of wealth and population between the regions. My examination copy lacked the index and illustrations, but contained the notes and a brief introduction to the original sources

University of Texas history professor H.W. Brands has written a biography of the three giants who dominated Congress in the first half of the 19th Century, namely Henry Clay, John Calhoun and Daniel Webster. All three were great intellects and orators who had a common dislike, for different reasons, of President Andrew Jackson.Clay comes on the scene in 1811 where in his first term he becomes Speaker of the House. He and Calhoun would join together as the leading “war hawks” and push Madison into war against England. They would later split over the issues of tariffs, slavery and most important, the preservation of the Union. Clay would become the author of the American System based on protective tariffs, internal improvements and a national bank which made him the true heir to Alexander Hamilton. In 1820 he would put together the Missouri Compromise which delayed the ultimate reckoning of the slavery issue and thereby allowed the continued development of a growing America.Calhoun, who served as vice-president to both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, quite a feat in its own right, became the tribune of the South. He fought tariffs, championed slavery and the ability of states to nullify federal laws they opposed which offered the theoretical basis for secession.Webster had a brilliant career as a lawyer where he was victorious in such major Supreme Court cases as McCulloch v. Maryland, Dartmouth College and Gibbons v. Ogden. Although he is most remembered for his “Union, now and forever” speech in his Reply to Hayne, he supported New England secession during the War of 1812.In 1850 all three of them, now all over 70, came together in the great debate over the admission of California into the Union as a free state, the treatment of fugitive slaves and the extension of slavery into the New Mexico Territory. The end result of the debate was yet another successful Clay compromise. And it was here where Webster in order to save the Union bent over backwards against his abolitionist constituency, on the issues of fugitive slaves and slavery in the New Mexico Territory, to agree with Clay. Oh to be in the Senate Gallery to hear the debate. The next best thing is reading Brands’ account. All three would be dead within two years.Brands brings to life these three great personalities as they dominated the Congress for 40 years. It is history at its best. I only wish our current Congress had at least one Clay or a Webster and unfortunately too much of the nullification spirit of John Calhoun is alive and well in both parties today.

Laika, by Nick Abadzis

Amazon.com Review

Laika was the abandoned puppy destined to become Earth's first space traveler. This is her journey. Nick Abadzis masterfully blends fiction and fact in the intertwined stories of three compelling lives. Along with Laika, there is Korolev, once a political prisoner, now a driven engineer at the top of the Soviet space program, and Yelena, the lab technician responsible for Laika's health and life. This intense triangle is rendered with the pitch-perfect emotionality of classics like Because of Winn Dixie, Shiloh, and Old Yeller. Abadzis gives life to a pivotal moment in modern history, casting light on the hidden moments of deep humanity behind history. Laika's story will speak straight to your heart. Questions for Nick Abadzis Jeff VanderMeer for Amazon.com: What inspired you to pick this particular topic for a graphic novel? And why, for example, a graphic novel as opposed to a strictly written account? Abadzis: I'd known it was a good story since I was about six years old. It had always been at the back of my mind as a story to tell. In 2002, new information came to light about the Sputnik II mission and specifically Laika's death. That was the spark, although back then I envisaged something much shorter. It, uh, grew. Why a graphic novel? Well, comics are my language. It's the medium that I'm most familiar and comfortable...so it was first choice. Amazon.com: What most surprised you while researching Laika? Abadzis: There were a few things. I had no idea there were so few Soviet engineers and scientists involved in the nascent space program--not to trivialize their incredible achievement but, in many senses, they just winged it, borne along in great part by Korolev's force of will and political maneuvering. Also it was interesting to find out how much the Soviet scientists cared for their cosmodogs. Events conspired to make Laika a sacrificial passenger on board Sputnik II, but they really did honor their canine cosmonauts. There's even a statue of Laika in Moscow. Perhaps this book will go some small way to re-establishing her position in history: whatever the circumstances, and whether you agree with what they did or not, she was the first earthling in orbit around this planet. Amazon.com: Was there anything that didn't make it into the graphic novel because it just didn't fit? Abadzis: There was quite a bit, actually. I could have done with another hundred pages. But I'd taken a bit of time to write and thumbnail it (which I do at the same time) and when that stage was finished, the publisher and I realized that the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launches was fast approaching. When I first pitched the idea to Mark Siegel at First Second, neither of us realized that it was so close. It felt like we needed to be a part of that, so I drew it extremely fast--two hundred pages in a little over eight months. It's an understatement to say that it was extremely hard work. What got left out was a longer explication of Laika's origins; the scenes with Mikhail, her first owner were much longer.... Originally, I did have an idea of doing three books: Laika would be the first, Gagarin the second, and a full-on comic strip biography of Korolev [the driven engineer on the project] would be the final part that would bind together events seen in the first two. Maybe one day. Certainly, elements of Korolev's life that I felt were important to the story made it into the final version of the book. Amazon.com: Did you worry about the sentimentality inherent in the situation? How did that affect your decisions in creating the graphic novel? Abadzis: I suppose it would have been easy to make it another cutesy, twee, and overly saccharine dead-dog story but that wouldn't have been true either to my taste or to the socio-political system and culture I was attempting to portray. Laika--the real Laika--was a cute dog, as photographs attest. There's no getting away from it, and there's plenty of evidence to suggest her owners thought so, too. I didn't want to anthropomorphize her, at least not to the extent that she was spouting speech/thought balloons like, say Tintin's Snowy (which works just fine for those books). Having made that decision--which I didn't really feel was an option, in any case--I knew that to really do it justice, I'd have to do a lot of research. The sentiment of the story, such as it is, would take care of itself and be implicit in certain character's actions or words (or not, as the case may be).... All that said, it'd be disingenuous to suggest that, in dealing with a true story that involves dogs and their owners (even if they happen to be scientists in a Soviet cosmodog program), there wouldn't be a bit of emotion. There's plenty (and I hope the reader feels it). But there's also the harsh reality of the time, the place and the confluence of events that put Laika into space. Amazon.com: What are you currently working on? Abadzis: I'm currently working on a new graphic novel for older readers called Skin Trouble, which is also for First Second. I'll leave it to your imagination as to what that's all about, suffice to say it'll be an ensemble piece, character-wise. I've also got a children's graphic novel in the works. Can't say anything about that at all, but I'm looking forward to drawing it.

Classic dog-story themes such as loyalty serve as a backdrop for this fictionalized account of Laika, the first living creature launched into outer space. A charming and scruffy little dog, Laika survives an uncaring master and life as a stray before becoming part of the Russian space program circa 1956, just as the Soviet Union had achieved a huge victory over American competition. With a stilted romanticism that doesn't fit the story's tone, Laika is established as "a very special dog," but soon the focus of the complex tale turns away from the dog to Yelena Dubrovsky, the trainer responsible for preparing Laika and the other dogs for the rigors of testing. Through Dubrovsky, the progress of the program and the incredible pressure on the scientists are given effective form. The rough-hewn art, similar to the Joann Sfar's work on the Dungeon books, makes the characters appear constantly nervous and uncertain, lending immediacy to the all-pervasive atmosphere of strict formality and enforced patriotism. An extensive bibliography of sources is appended. Karp, Jesse

Beautiful and tragic. I don't know if I have the heart to read this book again.Nick Abadzis’ LAIKA is a fictionalized account of the short life and sad death of Laika, the Soviet space dog. Be forewarned: it’s a three-handkerchief, bucket-of-tears kind of novel.Laika’s story is one of loyalty and trust repaid with callous abandonment and deception, and the injustice of this tale resonates deeply. “Do not worry,” Laika is told, again and again. “Trust me.” Meanwhile, death waits for her, implacable.Reading Abadzis’ graphic novel, I found myself saying “It’s not fair! It’s just not fair!” A very childlike reaction, one that I’m usually too jaded, or too adult, to voice so vehemently. But the pointless suffering of an innocent animal tends to trigger that kind of vehemence. We want to the world to be less cruel, and when we see a devoted animal suffering and dying precisely because she’s so devoted, then the rationalizations we’re usually able to make as adults don’t work so well anymore.Abadzis isn’t the first artist to engage with Laika’s tragic history. One of my favorite films is Lasse Hallstrom’s My Life as a Dog, available from the Criterion Collection. It’s the story of Ingemar, a young Swedish boy growing up in the fifties and struggling with feelings of abandonment and betrayal. Ingemar’s father is gone, his mother is desperately ill, and no one wants to tell him that his dog isn’t coming back. Sent away to live with relatives, Ingemar sits and looks at the stars and thinks of Laika, who got sent into space without any food, left there to die. “You have to compare,” he tells himself. “You always have to compare.” His grief at being sent away is sustainable, if only because he identifies with Laika, who had it so much worse.

Don't let the art style of this graphic novel fool you, it is defiantly an adult novel, with the politics of the Cold War Space Race at the front. Nick Abadzis has mixed what is unknown about Laika and what is known about her into a story that is very believable. This graphic novel conveys the truth accurately, and holds no punches back. Has a History lover I love this book. I applaud Nick for keeping the record straight. He could have very easily morphed the truth about Laika into a happy ending story. Nick opted to stick the historical truth and for that I applaud him. He got more details right than wrong based on what I know about Laika and the Sputnik II program. Dog lovers beware, this book will leave you in tears, Reading about Laika in historical documents made me cry. If you are looking to memorialize Laika and share her story, then this book is for you. Putting emotion into history is the best way to share it, and this book is a great stepping stone to learning about Laika. If you are a dog lover looking for a tear jerker, this book I guarantee you will leave you in tears.

I was already well aware of the 'official' story of the Soviet space dog Laika (aboard Sputnik 2) but this terrific and poignant graphic novel by Nick Abadzis fills in the missing pieces of Laika's story with skillfully (and seamlessly) interwoven fact and fiction (not too unlike James Cameron's "Titanic" in that regard). Real characters like rocket designer Sergei Korolev and fictional characters such as Laika's various previous owners are well integrated. Laika and the various other dogs in the Soviet training program have their simple, primal (touching) thoughts conveyed to the reader via thought captions which really 'feel' how a dog would/should think. The details of the period (late 1950s Soviet Union) are very authentic, and the characters are all part of a lovely (and heartbreaking) tapestry of Laika's life. The story moved me very deeply.

A wonderfully written and drawn story, that is mostly factual. Being an animal love, I couldn't stop thinking about Laika and feeling terribly emotional after finishing the book (a couple of months ago), and continue to feel sad even till today :'(

This tender graphic novel deals with the birth of spaceflight from the point of view of Laika, the first dog in space, who went aboard the Soviet Union's Sputnik 2, in late 1957, in a flight that was never meant to return to Earth. As the story is told here, after the success of the first Sputnik in October 1957, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev wanted to capitalize on the propaganda value of the world's first satellite and pushed for a new launching for the anniversary of the Russian revolution, just a month later, this time bringing into orbit for the first time a living being into space. There was little time for preparing a proper satellite, so a non retrievable rocket was launched. Thus, the moral of this tale is that a dog's life was sacrificed for the honor of the nation (there was little scientific value in Sputnik 2). The story here has three protagonists: Laika, the female stray dog turn sacrificial space pioneer (a moving, presumably invented story about her troubled, wandering life as an unwanted dog before being caught for the Soviet space program is presented here in the first chapters), Korolev, the driven and ambitious chief designer and a former gulag inmate during Stalin's time, and the fictional Yelena, the female lab technician in charge of Laika's health who, despite the advice of her superiors, comes to care for her personally. With drawings that are attractive without being flashy, this is a very entertaining book. It is also quite poignant, without being overtly sentimental.

This book is incredibly well written and illustrated. It's fantastic. But as a dog lover, it destroyed me. I had planned to take my time looking at the different illustrations closely and processing the story, but the illustrations of Laika's facial expressions were heartbreaking. It was a great book, but it was so hard to read.

I've now read three books on the US Navy SEALs. This will be a combined review I'll post on all three books, because I feel each one is important to understanding these elite warriors. Ever since Operation Neptune Spear, and the announcement that SEAL Team Six had successfully raided a compound in Pakistan and killed Osama bin Laden, I had been wondering why it was that SEAL Team Six had been sent, rather than our other elite counterterrorism unit, the mysterious Delta Force. After all, the mission took off from an airbase in a land-locked country, traveled over land to their target hundreds of miles inland, and then returned, having not flown over any major bodies of water at all. Why send the Navy, when an Army unit presumably could do the job just as well?I've always been interested in the military, and military training. Though that particular life was not for me, I've always admired those who choose it, and been proud of my veteran relatives. I've watched countless boot camp documentaries, shows on special forces fiction and non-, and I want to understand what it takes to be a warrior. To understand what it takes to be a warrior tasked with taking down the most wanted terrorist in the world, I wanted to read books that would explain their training, their lives, and their physical and mental toughness. The Warrior Elite: The Forging of SEAL Class 228 by Dick Couch was the first book I read. It covers the entire Basic Underwater Demolitions/SEAL training course for Class 228. In the introduction, the making of a SEAL warrior is already made clear. Couch, a former Navy SEAL himself, Class 45 during the Vietnam era, explains that the Marine Corps builds 20,000 new marines a year for a force of 174,000, trained over eleven weeks. For the Army, the very tough Ranger School graduates 1,500 soldiers a year from their eight week course. With a twenty-seven week course, only 250 men a year graduate BUD/S, and even then, they are not yet SEALs. BUD/S only earns you a chance, and at least another six months of training await these men before they earn their Trident, and become a SEAL. The Warrior Elite covers the 27 weeks of BUD/S, following along a single class from day one of Indoc to graduation. But first Dick Couch tells the story of Kim Erksine in Grenada, a SEAL who led his eleven men during a mission that went bad when they were unable to use their radios. Along the way, he describes how their training, beginning with BUD/S, shaped their decisions and actions each step of the way. They made it to the water, many of them wounded, but all of them alive and still fighting. Eventually they swam out into the ocean and were picked up. Kim Erskine credits his and his men's survival to the knowledge that each of them had survived BUD/S. Already, it's clear. SEALs don't quit. So how does the Navy find men who just won't quit? They do everything they can to make BUD/S volunteers quit, and then trains the rest. 114 men had orders to BUD/S Class 228, and on Day 1, only 98 are still on the roster, 16 gave up before it even started. At any time, a BUD/S student can quit, and many do. After two weeks of Indoc, where BUD/S hasn't even begun yet, the class is down to 69 men. At graduation, 10 men remain from the original class. Another six would graduate later with another class, having been rolled back for medical reasons. The story of what those men went through to graduate, and to earn the right to continue their training and perhaps become SEALs someday, is what The Warrior Elite explores. Frequently reading the book, I exclaimed out loud "wow", I just couldn't believe it. Everyone talks about Hell Week, the week in Phase One that weeds out a significant number of students, most on the very first day, but that is just one very hard week out of 27 very hard weeks, and the men who survive it learn that to be a SEAL is to only have harder weeks ahead. While The Warrior Elite covers post-BUD/S training briefly in the epilogue, The Finishing School: Earning the Navy SEAL Trident, by the same author Dick Couch, covers this training in much greater depth. This second book is a sequel researched and written in the years following 9/11, and as such a higher emphasis is placed on protecting the identities of the warriors who are training to become qualified SEALs in the platoons, and the secret tactics used by SEALs in their operations. In that regard, the book is much less comprehensive, and much less personal. While a great deal of information is given on the recent reorganization of the SEAL Teams and their deployments, less information is given about actual training. It's hard to read The Warrior Elite without also reading The Finishing School, without the second book you're missing half the story, but The Finishing Book is sadly not the complete story, either. It's understandable for security reasons, but for somebody with a fascination for military training and tactics, as well as the men who go through it all, it's disappointing. Again, though, the lesson is clear in The Finishing School. Not everyone who gets through BUD/S is going to become a SEAL. Some quit, some disqualify for medical or performance reasons, and the graduating class is smaller than the class coming in. One thing that The Finishing School does very well is explain the warrior culture of the SEAL Teams. These are quiet professionals who work together in close-knit groups. All of them are eager to get on deployment, and each of them maximizes their opportunities to continually learn and get better whenever they can. Those who are lone wolves, and can't work safely in a team, are quickly removed from the organization. As always, it pays to be a winner, and no man is left behind. The third book is SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper, by Howard E. Wasdin and Steven Templin. This book is very much a memoir, rather than a detailed day-by-day log of the training done in SEAL Team Six. In fact, for somebody wanting to read about the internal workings of the Navy's most elite-of-the-elite warriors, they wouldn't get very many details at all. What you get, instead, is a sense of the sorts of men who do what Howard Wasdin did, volunteer, and then keep volunteering, for the hardest jobs they could find, always looking for a bigger challenge. At times, Wasdin comes across as incredibly arrogant. He seems to put down other members of the special forces community, as well as federal law enforcement, at numerous occasions. We may never know, since members of SEAL Team Six, the CIA, and Delta Force are so tight-lipped, just how much of it is completely accurate. But nonetheless, this is a story of the sorts of brutal childhoods that spawn special forces operators, and the psychology of a warrior during training and in combat. Wasdin, I think, is more humble than he comes across. What he is, is a straight-shooter. If somebody else screwed up, he says so. At times hilarious, and at times horrifying, the story of Howard Wasdin from childhood to adulthood, with military service in between, is incredibly engaging. I had difficulties putting it down, and read through the entire book in just two sittings. While nowhere near as comprehensive as The Warrior Elite or The Finishing School, it gives us a window into the minds and lives of the men who got bin Laden.I highly recommend all three books, and in the order I read them. Having read each one, I've come to understand, perhaps, some of the reasons why President Obama ordered SEAL Team Six to a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. I'll leave it put to you to decide for yourself why that might've been, but if I learned anything at all about SEALs, reading these three books, it's that they always work as a team, it pays to be a winner, and they'd rather die than quit. The Warrior Elite gets 5 stars for being as comprehensive as it is, and a truly astonishing tale of 10 men from Class 228, and the others who didn't graduate with them.

I loved this book specifically because it follows the story of class 228 going through BUD/S, it shows and follows the men who have the committed to push on and never give up, one of my favorite parts is how even through the pain some of the students can still keep a smile on their face, great respect to the men of class 228 and Jason Birch who smiled through it all. Once again awesome job to Dick Couch on this book.

First off, let me just say if you are interested in becoming a SEAL, know someone who is or wants to become a SEAL, are just interested in elite warrior teams, or just like to read about how people can endure incredible amounts of physical and mental torture at the hands of loving instructors, then you need to read this book.I have read a few books about the SEALs. I was under the assumption that BUD/S and Hell week were the pinnacle of the incredibly tough and demanding training these men have to endure. I was wrong. BUD/S training lasts about 6 months, Hell week happens before month 2. And the pace never lets up. This book covers the additional training these men receive after BUD/S training. They must also complete STT, (SEAL Tactical Training) US Army Airborne training, and a host of other choices like language schools, sniper school, SDV (SEAL Delivery Vehicle) etc. After BUD/S training it will be at least 6 months of arduous training just to get to the point where they have their review board and are deemed qualified to receive their SEAL Trident. Then its another year or so of training before they will deploy somewhere and start earning their keep. That is at least two years, and sometimes even more, before these guys are ready to go start contributing to the war on terror, or whatever other international problem we may have that needs special attention at the moment.I was pleasantly surprised to read about the SEALs "zero tolerance" for alcohol related offenses. After seeing Hollywood characterize these men as hard drinking Rambo types, and after reading about some of the SEALs in Marchinkos books, you would think drinking was a requirement. But the newer policy makes a lot of sense. These men are incredibly well trained, why would you allow someone like that to possibly get drunk and lose control? That would be a scary thought. It is already pretty scary thinking about how well trained these men are, and the calm level of control they maintain. I feel sorry for anyone that is not on their side.I have a renewed interest in the Navy SEALs at the moment. Many, many years ago, right after I finished Navy dive school (which I absolutely loved, maybe I am a glutton for punishment?) I started to seriously think about going to BUD/S. There were a few reasons why I decided not to go, and I put that part of my life behind me. Instead of being cold, wet, and tired, I started a family and had 4 boys. My oldest just turned 18 and was accepted to a great military college in Virginia. His plan is to get his degree (which I have told him was non-negotiable, a degree is a must) and then he plans on becoming a Navy SEAL. Its funny how fate keeps bringing this back into my life. That is why I read this book.I have given this book to my son to read. If he is still set on this course after reading it, I will help him to prepare for his journey. I know I can help him to get to an even higher level mentally and physically and that will be of some help to him. I can only hope it will prepare him for what he will have to overcome.Getting back to the book, I have an even higher opinion of these men than I did before I started reading this book. I am very proud of what they do and I am even prouder that they are on our side! The level of professionalism these men achieve and maintain is incredible. It is hard not to stand in awe of what they can accomplish.

A great read. I like the way the Author took the story, it helps to understand the thinking of these brave men. The one thing I guess I'll never understand is why The country spends so much time, money and effort and then second guess these guys. They really are the last stop before the smelly stuff hits the whirly thing, and yet they die for there country, it really would behest the country to support those that put their life on the line, fighting horrors we will probably never get to see or hear about, in countries that are basically living in another century, except for their very rich and connected overlords whom it seems get educated in the very elite Colleges and universities around the world, in the countries they are trying to hurt. Go figure. To all you Warriors out there, we salute you and thank you for your selfless service for us, and bless you for looking after the very freedom's that we take for granted.
