Since both Saturday and Sunday are easier puzzles, this isn’t as much of an issue with having to write in numbers. I can usually figure out the patterns without having to write in numbers.The weekday pages have big squares so you have plenty of room to write in potential numbers. Nice, mostly fairly simple puzzles.The holder should include a way to store a pen -either a large hole in the plastic tab at the front,or a 1/.4" hole straight down vertically through the pages to use it as a pen holder.

Got this as a gift for my husband for Christmas. He enjoys doing a puzzle each day although he has said that even the "hard" ones are not very challenging. He also was not a fan of the different colored blocks but is slowly getting used to them.

A gorgeous book in illustrations, language, and sentiment. When a Cree girl asks her grandfather about the language, she learns why he doesn't remember it anymore (from the boarding school days when culture and language was taken away from the Native Americans). A powerful, beautiful, heartwarming story that will be important to share with kids of all cultures.Pair with When We Were Alone, I Am Not a Number, and other books relating the boarding school experience, or Hungry Johnny and My Heart Fills with Happiness to relate to contemporary culture of First Nations people.

An absolutely lovely read! I highly recommend all Melanie Florence's work.

Stolen Words is a children's book written by Melanie Florence, and illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard. It tells the story of the beautiful relationship between a little girl and her grandfather. When she asks her grandfather how to say something in his language – Cree – he admits that his language was stolen from him when he was a boy. The little girl then sets out to help her grandfather find his language again. This sensitive and warmly illustrated picture book explores the inter generational impact of the residential school system that separated young Indigenous children from their families. The story recognizes the pain of those whose culture and language were taken from them, how that pain is passed down, and how healing can also be shared.Stolen Words is a beautifully illustrated picturebook that points out something from our history that is often forgotten, and shows that some things can be done. We forget that while the Native Americans, and pretty much every indigenous culture around the world, has had more than just land and lives stolen from them. They were striped of language and culture and forced to adopt the language and in many cases religion and/or culture of those pushing them out or putting them in captivity. It is gently put, in deference to the target audience, but I think the adults sharing this with young readers will be reminded of all that these cultures have lost. I love that the granddaughter, with the help of another trusted adult, made an effort to do what she could to return the stolen words to her grandfather. I only wish that more resources were available to those seeking to regain lost parts of their heritage, and that they were as easy to find as in this book. Some languages are lost completely, or are remembered by only a few and not recorded in any way. Perhaps this book will inspire young people to learn their own culture, and inspire elders or older members of the family to rediscover it as well. I would have loved to see some resources listed at the end of the book to help those seeking to reclaim the language or culture of their ancestors.

A short but extremely powerful book about the impact on the residential schools not only on the children that lived in them, but on the future generations. A young girl asks her grandfather how to say Grandfather in Cree, his native language. Unfortunately, he does not know. When he was forced to live and attend the residential schools, his language was taken from him. He very simply states how this happened and you can not help but feel his pain, both physical and emotional. His granddaughter wants to help him regain the Cree language and finds him an old Cree dictionary and they learn together. This is a very moving story. It is simple, yet powerful. This is a dark spot on Canadian History which is just beginning to be recognized and spoken about openly. An excellent book to be in every school library to share this experience and learn from it.
