I'm always suspicious of a book from an author I hadn't heard of before and ordering it online didn't help. Within the first couple of pages I was sure I had bought a rehash of everything I had read about COM in so many other books during the last yearand a half. Seeing the many pages of printed code, while I 'fan previewed' the book convinced me that this was the 'filler' of a lightweight. But this was not so. By page 50 Mr. Harmon was clearly taking me places I hadn't been and by the end of the third chapter, I knew that this book would fit nicely between Danny Thorpe and Ray Konopka on my programmers bookshelf.Eric explains COM from a perspective familiar to a Delphi programmer and doesn't waste time teaching OOP 101 as so many other books of the genre. He starts each new area on friendly turf to a typical delphi programmer, creates a framwork, and builds on that structure to explain rather complex concepts quickly and effectively. I found his method of teaching comprehensive and thorough - yet demanding. If you aren't already reasonably comfortable with OOP than you still have a little more homework to do before you move onto COM. But it'll be here when you are. Even a general understanding of interfaces, com and dcom would be advisable though though he does review the basics briefly. But then he quickly moves through interfaces and drills down into levels that I hadn't encountered and I'm not yet at page 100. About a third of the way through chapter three and I knew I was on the clock - that this book would pay for itself in no time.I must admit that I am only into Chapter 5 now but did catch a peek of all to come. If you are a reasonably seasoned programmer and want to move on to COM with the rest of the Windows programming community, this is how you do it. Simply start reading at page one, do every example in the book as you go along, sometime before the appendix you will have your COM/DCOM wings. The embedded source code is there because it has to be there. Nearly every line is referenced in the narrative and the text depends on it. If you already have programmed some COM/DCOM experience as I had, you may still find the read worthwhile.I must caution that the book is exceptionally dry and without witticisms or amusing anecdotes. Mr. Harmon is down to business and makes no effect to entertain the anyone that I can tell. You won't even find a jab at Microsoft here. But if you want to learn COM/DCOM as a Delphi programmer, you have come to the right place. You can always go out to the club when you're done.

Definitely an improvement over the brief sprints through the subject found in other general Delphi guides, but... When I got my copy, I wondered if I got a different edition. My copy has a picture of ruins, not the elephant in the phone booth pictured above(NOTE: The cover photo has since been changed on Amazon to the ruins.) I was also surprised when several examples from the book didn't work right on Delphi 3 or 5.(Surprised because previous reviewers commented on the examples being usable.) Several features discussed, including not needing to define functions that return HRESULT, would work when called by another Delphi app (only when using an Interface, not DispInterface or Ole Variants), but not from VBA. Changing back to the 'old-style' HRESULT code fixed that. Not only that, but the author seems to forget the names of the recently defined interfaces when referring to them later (ex: IAreaUnitConverter becomes IUnitAuto! ). When I checked the web site to download the examples to try and compare with my code, I found that only selected examples were actually contained in the zip file. All I can figure is that I got a "beta" copy.

Until now the only decent Delphi reference on COM has been the two chapters by John Lam in Marco Cantu's "Delphi Developer's Handbook". This new book presents 500 pages of well written, focused coverage of the practicalities of Delphi's COM implementation. It is ideal for those with moderate Delphi skills who want to come up to speed quickly in writing ActiveX Control or Form solutions, or who want a good explanation of the usage of interfaces, variants, connection points, automation or DCOM.Although it goes into depth in a couple of places - structured storage and property sets in particular - readers will still need to look to people like Binh Ly for advanced discussion of threading models and so forth. I was hoping to find detailed discussion of the internal workings of DAX, TOleContainer and the TComObject/Factory descendants, but most of the code in the book focuses on *using* the VCL framework rather than on its design and the various bugs and gotchas it works around.Those with C++ COM/OLE experience looking for Delphi solutions (eg those rolling their own OLE DB providers, windowless ActiveX controls or Active Document servers) may be disappointed: it's not "Inside ATL" for the VCL. However I think the majority of Delphi developers - who don't have time to read Brockschmidt or Box but just want tools and solutions that work - will find the book a great time-saver and reference. COM newbies wanting Delphi tutorials need look no further.It's certainly an excellent contribution to the Delphi literature. I'll be buying a second copy for the office, but it left me thirsty for more.

Its hard to find any published music and lyrics for Edith Piaf so I was pleased to find this. Still, I wish I could find a larger collection and especially something with lyrics in English. I am researching for a play I am writing about Piaf's life and I am finding it hard to get material I need. Still this little collection has several familiar and well loved songs including La Vie en rose, Milord, Padam...Padam and several less familiar to me.

Love it! Except that "Non, je ne regrette rien" is not in it.

At the top of the hierarchy are the Golds, who through genetic and surgical manipulation have evolved as superior human beings. At the bottom of the hierarchy are the Reds, who are unskilled manual laborers, conditioned to a brutal environment. The remainder of society falls into one of the other “colors” that fill a specific need within society.Red Rising focuses on the Golds and Reds: the Golds rule society with an iron fist and no compassion; the Reds toil all day in their underground city where they remain miners from generation to generation. These Reds have no actual knowledge of the rest of society; they have been deceived into believing that by mining helium-3 they are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. In reality, Mars and the rest of the solar system had been successfully colonized centuries earlier. The Golds control not only what and where the Reds live and work, but what they know. Our hero, Darrow, is a Red. He and the Reds like him are essentially slaves to a decadent ruling class, enslaved for generation after generation with no voice and no hope.But there are those who have learned the truth and want change. The story takes shape as Darrow is rescued by a group of rebels known as The Sons of Ares; Darrow has been selected to infiltrate the Golds at its highest levels.The book is fast paced and exciting, although it takes roughly two thirds of the book to establish the backstory. This is both a positive and a negative: it takes a long time to get to the exciting part, but one of the things I liked about this book is the in-depth character development and backstory. I gave this book a rating of four out of five due to the excellent character development and backstory, and the quick pace once it reached its stride.

A young slave born into a mine working family. After suffering loss and hardship he must make a choice: continue on as before? end his life? or strike back at the oppressors? What follows is basically GATTICA and The Hunger Games. On Steroids.+ Overarching themes. A back and forth look at the human spirit, what drives people, and what people are willing to overcome.+ Awesome world. The author does a great job building a plausible universe. It is detailed and interesting. While certain sci-fi elements don't pass the logic test, it is an enjoyable universe.+ Does a good job with keeping the protagonist 'human'. No infallible/invincible characters here.+ An exciting read. Hard to put down+/- Most stories pull you into following a person, this story pulled me into following a movement, an idea of change. I did not particularly like Darrow, but that didn't take away from the story.+/- Bloody. Themes include slavery/rape/torture/cannibalism.- Written POV. Best described as First Person masquerading as Third Person Limited. We are basically watching a story unfold with limited information into Darrow's mind... but the story is filled with: 'I did...'.- Relatively poor characterization. Most characters are stereotypical with limited growth. The characters that do show changes are recycled: as the series goes on, the same 'growth' is applied to 3-4 other characters.

Absolutely loved this. Although it is said that you don't have to read the novel that led to the museum in Istanbul about which this book is written, I think it just makes sense if you read the two together. I really liked the novel Museum of Innocence and this book goes amazingly with that novel. The pictures of the objects in the museum really help to give a flavor of having visited the museum. I am not sure if I will ever be able to visit the museum in real life but after read this book, I at least don't feel like I totally missed it. Very well done. Mr. Pamuk is a genius.

Pamuk explores the essence of time and love and life in objects that he has collected and assembled in intriguing boxes in his Istanbul Museum of Innocence. The pictures of those objects forms the bulk of the book. His explanations and annotations serve as guides. A delightful look and read.

This volume is a highly unusual, but fascinating companion to Pamuk's latest novel. It not only gives insight into how Pmuk went about planning and writing the novel, but also underscores the major themes and clarifies what Pamuk meant to say in his fine novel.

A most fascinating exploration through the world of memoraibilia collected and now on display by a gifted writer, with an eternally curious mind!

It is a companion to Pamuk's museum, and is an excellent way to expand the experience of The Museum of Innocence. His manifesto on what museums can or should be is noble. As always, Pamuk is subtle, warm, and engaging.

Two well read Turkish women could not get through "The Museum of Innocence" but if you persist, visiting the Museum of Innocence in Istanbul can be tremendously rewarding. You must be as obsessed with finishing the book as the main character is with his lover. The Innocence of Objects is the companion to the museum and is worth buying because they don't allow photographs in the museum. Some of the displays are very clever and memorable!

This is a fascinating book about a wealthy man in Istanbul, obsessed with a younger woman, and with collecting every single object associated with her that he is able to obtain. He collects everything - her used cigarette butts, coffee cups, used tissues, there is no limit. He devotes an entire apartment, and his entire adult life to it. It's a true single minded obsession that ends after decades in his marriage to the woman, then disaster. Along the way, the reader gets a colorful picture of upper class Turkish society in the late 50s and 60s.

It uses a clear, easy to read font type, paragraphs wraps around well, includes an hyperlinked table of content for easy navigation, and handles well the picture content of the book in relation to the text. The only negative is the price as compared to the full ebook version.

Drawing faces for me has always been hard but with these lessons it in mafe easier then ever. I can now get the eyes right and in the right place and I encourage you to try your best at all you do. So grab your pencils and paper and enjoy your day.

This is David Byrne week for me. On Sunday, I caught the sensational David Byrne and St. Vincent show at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. The last time I saw Byrne live was when I caught the Talking Heads on August 19, 1983 at the old Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York City. So, clearly I was already a Byrne fan.How Music WorksThe other part of David Byrne week is his fabulous new book How Music Works. The book is Byrne's take on the industry he's succeeded in. He offers keen observations about the music industry, the art of making music, telling stories in the book using a combination of history, anthropology, and music theory. I love this book!In particular, Byrne has a fascinating take on the development of music, which is quite different from what other music historians say. In a chapter titled "Creation in Reverse" he argues that music evolves to fill the space where it is performed.For example, the Talking Heads evolved in the 1970s at New York punk club CBGB requiring volume to overcome the din. The sparse music that came out of the CBGB scene such as the Ramones and Television worked perfectly for that room.Music that evolved in gothic cathedrals (lots of reverberation) has long notes with no key changes. Carnegie Hall and other similar rooms require texture. With discos, people made music to exploit the fantastic sound systems and people's need to dance. Rock music played in hockey arenas (the worst acoustics on the planet) must be straightforward with medium tempos. You get the idea. The music that is successful works perfectly for each venue.With personal sound systems (starting with the Walkman in the 1970s then evolving into MP3 players such as the iPod), all of a sudden you can hear every single detail. This allowed pop music to evolve from its early radio form.Byrne has a 2010 TED Talk on this idea: "How architecture helped music evolve."How Content WorksAs I devoured How Music Works I was constantly thinking how Byrne's ideas apply to other forms of content. I think the ideas are valid when thinking about the written word, video content, and the Web. I used the ideas in How Music Works to formulate ideas about content in general.David Byrne's How Music Works is amazing. Read it. And as you do if you're not in the music business, feel free to substitute "content" for "music" and see where the ideas lead you.

It would be difficult to praise this book too much.Clearly at age 60 David Byrne has had a lot of experience in the world of music and has had a lot of time to think about it and he has graciously decided to share his thoughts here.The book starts out as a sort of anthropological look at music in general, then continues as he explains how the actual space in which the music is created (a small tavern, a concert hall, or a forest, for example) influences what type of music is produced. Or how technology changes and influences music.There is quite a bit of musical autobiography here as he discusses his work with Talking Heads, and subsequent projects. Personally the first five Talking Heads albums (especially #1 and #2) were and are incredibly important and influential in my own personal history, and even in my development from a youth to an adult; but after the fifth album I moved in a different direction musically than Byrne did and honestly, unless I heard it on the radio, I have never even listened to his subsequent works - so it was interesting read about them here.As the book progresses Byrne explains much about the technical processes involved in recording music and the business side of music - that is to say different ways in which the music is marketed and sold. It's all fascinating, the writing is just right - I never actually thought "Oh, get over yourself!" even during the autobiographical sections, (this demonstrates the perfection of his writing style), the illustrations were interesting, and physically the hard cover McSweeney's edition is in itself a work of art.This is interesting - I recommended this book to my Dad, who is 76 years old. He knows who David Byrne and Talking Heads are and he never really liked them at all (but I know he got to hear a lot of their music, probably against his will, as I lived in his house during my five year infatuation with Talking Heads) but he loved the book stating he thought Byrne was a genius!Actually I will just go ahead and quote his email review - I don't think he will mind:"I've mentioned this book, recommended to me by Michael, to each of you whom I've seen in the past week or so. I found "How Music Works" by David Byrne to be fascinating and it's opened up to me new ways of looking at music in the world. I'll leave it to the Amazon description which I've included to give you a general overview. I have never been a 'Talking Heads' fan but that doesn't matter while reading this thing. This guy is a genius and his observations are very stimulating, thought provoking. He knows whereof he speaks and, though I didn't grasp some topics. I am really glad I tried."
