Jung's "Synchronicity" is an essay about those moments when everything just seems to come together. Jung defined synchronicity as "the coincidence in time of two or more causally unrelated events which have the same meaning". Synchronicity is a cluster of meaningful patterns that normal cause and effect has not caused. Synchronicity is acausal. Beyond cause as we know it. A bridge between the known and the unknown, between the conscious and the unconscious. Though there have been others from the West that have expanded upon Jung's thoughts concerning synchronicity this is still a very good place to start. For further reading I would suggest looking to Jean Shinoda Bolen and F. David Peat, among others. For an Oriental perspective regarding acausality, synchronicity, may I suggest the "I Ching" and "Tao Te Ching". Lao Tzu, the author of "Tao Te Ching", is the father of Taoism. As Barbara Marx Hubbard has said, "The spiral of our evolutionary progress is turning back in time to reconnect with the great sage Lao Tzu". Taoism is a way of life that attempts to live in harmony with the unity of the universe by following the natural grain of things, of going with the flow. Wisdom is timeless and knows no bounds. In "Synchronicity" Jung was trying to describe to the Western mind, his own included, the phenomenon of the alignment of universal forces with one's own life experiences. Much like Quantum Physics, Jungian Pyschology was beginning to leave behind the mechanistic universe of the 18th and 19th Centuries and starting to view reality as an organic whole. Our leading thinkers were becoming more than mere observers, they were becoming participants. Objectivity and subjectivity were merging. There are no lines of demarcation in nature, rather there are merely areas of confluence. Everything is interconnected. With Jung chance met design.Synchronicity though subjective by nature, is scientific. Cynical skeptics will point out that the theory is not "Scientifically" verifiable because synchronicity is not quantifiable. That synchronicity is nothing more than magic, fantasy. The fact that the "Scientific Method" these same skeptics cherish was channeled via a series of dreams, including a dream within a dream, to Rene Descartes strikes me as ironic to say the least. Subjectivity created their system for objecting to subjectivity. Can't we all just get along? To quote Einstein, "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality". All attempts to describe anything exactly fall short. Our best theorys are models of reality, not reality itself. Most, if not all, of our greatest scientists have also been mystics, or at least had a mystical experience. The "Promethean Impulse" or "Divine Inspiration" that has been granted to our greatest minds is not make believe. The answers to many of our scientific questions have come in the form of dreams, or other non-rational states of consciousness. It took a dreamer to realize that the Earth is round. There is always something new to learn. Jung was no charlatan. He was an optimist. He believed in our ability to grow and change. He spoke from personal experience tempered by thoughtful meditation. He claimed that the Universe is no coincidence and neither are we. I agree. Read Jung.

Absolute classic! Jung is the guy who introduced the term, he was friends with Wolfgang Pauli, the physicist who came up with the Pauli exclusion principle, which is central to understanding the structure of atoms.Scientists were much more "mystical" back then. Seems like it was more fun back in the day, but these ideas are coming around again, even since the Aspect's verification of the Bell inequalities almost for decades ago ...Now with quantum entanglement on the tip of everyone's tongue, I feel like this book is worth a read. One note - it's a little dry, I would say deliberately. Jung is trying to be scientific and concise, about a very difficult subject. BUT if you are looking for a "Gee Wiz, isn't the world crazy and cool?!?" type of book, this is not for you.Oh, and I couldn't resist:A connecting principle,Linked to the invisibleAlmost imperceptibleSomething inexpressible.Science insusceptibleLogic so inflexibleCausally connectibleYet nothing is invincible.

This work by Jung is a fascinating look at the subjective experience of being a human mind in a physical universe. He begins the book with the following statements:1) Natural laws are statistical truths, which means that they are completely valid only when we are dealing with macrophysical quantities.2) The philosophical principle that underlies our conception of natural law is causality.3) Their [Acausal events] existence - or at least their possibility - follows logically from the premise of statistical truth.4) But if the causal principle is only relatively valid, then it follows that even though in the vast majority of cases an apparently chance series can be causally explained, there must still remain a number of cases which do not show any causal connection.5) Chance groupings or series seem, at least to our present way of thinking, to be meaningless, and to fall as a general rule within the limits of probability.6) Should this proof (of acausal events exceeding the limits of probability) be forthcoming, however, it would prove at the same time that there are genuinely non-causal combinations of events for whose explanation we should have to postulate a factor incommensurable with causality.7) Because of this quality of simultaneity, I have picked the term "synchronicity" to designate a hypothetical factor equal in rank to causality as a principle of explanation.8) Meaningful coincidences - which are to be distinguished from meaningless chance groupings - therefore seem to rest on an archetypal foundation. From this basis Jung explores paraphychology, astrology from an archetypal basis, the I Ching and other forms of divination, near-death experiences, and radioactive decay. From this and in discussion with Wolfgang Pauli he formulated the tetradic schema of our quantum based physical existence: Indestructible Energy-Causality-Synchronicity-Space Time Continuum. We are all aware of both meaningless and meaningful coincidences in our daily lives. They are the basis for surprises and superstition, and decision making. For instance, in business we deal with staffing issues in the retail environment. Managers determine by experience and analysis the number of employees needed to serve the average number of customers that will enter the store. However, we also know that they come in random clusters or retail statistical fluctuations that necessitate additional personnel to maintain customer service levels and avoid losses in sales during these surges. These represent meaningless coincidences but ones which we must prepare for.As a reader I often experience what seem like meaningful coincidences like a new vocabulary word suddenly occurring in each new text I read. Or picking up books in my library that I have owned for years that I only now feel are relevant for the zeitgeist. Perhaps these are instances of awareness but I often wonder at their significance. However, I decided to write this review today because I feel I am in the midst of a synchronous experience. At three in the morning of November 10th of this year, the town of Marlinton (the countyseat of a neighboring county) began to burn and lost a block of its business district due to constant winds that made it impossible for the firefighters to contain the blaze. That morning I awoke to learn of this ongoing event and to also learn it was the anniversary of the wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald which as the song reminds us occurred "...when the gales of November come early". Unable to sleep in the early morning hours of the 11th of November I picked up "The Skrayling Tree" by Michael Moorcock, a writer who incorporates the archetypes of Dr. Jung as the basis for his fantasy multiverse. As I turned to Chapter Two of the book I was stunned by its title: "On the Shores of Gitche Gumee" - the Chippewa name for Lake Superior where the men of the Edmund Fitzgerald lost their lives. Are these meaningful coincidences, a synchronicity? If you are interested in science of synchronicity or the role of archetypes in the mystic arts you should read this insightful work by one of the great thinkers of psychology and the nature of the human experience.

My husband is not only the most difficult person to buy a present for but also a huge coffee snob. You've heard the song, "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover," my husband has 50 ways to brew coffee. Cold press, press pot, drip, brew, etc. And he's tried a ton of coffees as well. He times things, checks the temperature of the water and has also used water from our well before it goes through any filtration or softening. So I was thrilled when I got this book and not only did he not ask to return it (yes, almost every present I get him) but he has said how much he loves this. He said it is very comprehensive and it covers so much from the bean to the roast, coffee brewing methods, etc. So I guess I win this one. Finally, after 20 years.

I can't believe that I waited this long to get this book. It's absolutely stunning and a must have for any coffee need. Thank you James for your hard work to bring this to us and and at such an affordable price. Beautiful in every aspect.

This book was suggested to me by a friend-of-a-friend who does small-batch commercial roasting and it found me at just the right place of my coffee exploration path, however, this is, probably, not the best "introduction to coffee" type of book. The first half of the book is an overview of coffee growing, roasting and brewing and, although quite well done, in my opinion, assumes some familiarity with the subject and may feel a little cursory otherwise. The second half is dedicated to coffee growing regions and, if you are not into that level of detail, may feel a little too "referency".

Great book. The first portion of the book is very informative and interesting. The rest should probably be used strictly as a reference book. It lists every coffee growing country, its growing history, and growing varietals. It gets very repetitive if you are reading it straight through.

The first half is a rehashing of every other book on coffee, plus a bit of extra pretense. The second half offers a great overview of the literal world of coffee, a great resource for consumers with some solid info to round out a pro's knowledge. Doesn't get into great detail on some areas but does have very current info on those it does. Overall a better option than attempting to source this info from coffee forums, if a bit of an overpriced on.

I am new to brewing and grinding my own custom coffee and that's why I bought this excellent book. There is a LOT of great information about all the different kinds of coffee, on a world round basis. I doubt I will even be able to get a handle on all of them, but it's very nice to have a reference that I can go to when friends make suggestions. The part of the book dealing with grinding and brewing offered many good suggestions and I am very happy I make this purchase.

Useful book with many details to better understand coffee overall. Well written, adult and no trendy preaching in the text. Book addresses around 80% of the questions I have on the subject. I would recommend to adult coffee fans. Too many books on coffee spend more time preaching the author's trendy ideals rather than discussing coffee.

I bought this for my elder sister, who is a coffee fanatic. The book makes a great decoration for a coffee table in the living room. The content is interesting and well-organized and the images are glossy and gorgeous. A great book for any coffee-lover. My book showed up in great condition and had no problems getting to me, despite living in an apartment building.

Girard is definitely a capable salesman. This is seriously old school stuff, but it works. Generally, psychology doesn't change that much. People want things but also have internal dialogue arguing against purchasing those things. Joe's style of treating customers like real people puts them at ease and helps them trust him. He helps ease that skeptical inner voice and allows customers to feel like they've done something good for themselves when they buy. Definitely a good book for sales people.

Joe is the man. Remember dad talking about him a lot, and not that ol pops wasn't well versed in sales as a GM of Cadillac, Nissan, Pontiac, but even an experienced salesman can learn something from this book. Gave it to my bf who is also in sales, and he says the way it's written is entertaining! He read it in a few nights.

This book by Joe Girard was written 35 years ago. Most business books get very very stale and the information they contain becomes irrelevant with the changes in technology, consumer tastes and business process evolution. Then along comes this book...The premise that Girard uses is simple - work the relationship. Do a lot of small things right - things like thank you cards, referrals, being honest but selling, understanding your customer's needs and most importantly, making your customer a customer for life.A car salesman by trade, Girard is a brilliant sales psychologist - and because of that, the book is more about sales psychology than specific time bound business techniques - and it makes it timeless.I never heard of Joe Girard before I read this book, and am now glad to be introduced to his straightforward and timeless approach. Pick it up...

I read the negative reviews and some say that he keeps relating back to selling cars. Well obviously, that’s how the man got the title “worlds greatest salesman”. In my opinion, this book was fantastic. It was filled with non generic information and things that could actually help you. I feel like the people that didn’t get anything from this book are the people that are looking for a simple way to get rich. That’s not how this book works. He gives you info on how he did it, and it gives you ideas, at least that’s what it did for me. I would recommend this book, and if you’re wondering, I detail cars professionally and I still got ideas even though my profession is nowhere near selling cars.

Joe Girard is an every-mans sales trainer. How did he sell all those cars? Finding out will move any person's sales volume up. Must be in every sales persons personal library.

This is a classic book of selling. Although it was wirtten back in the 1970's and some of the stuff Girard does (like writing cards, sending faxes, etc.) may seem dated, the concept of staying in the mind of your customer remains the same. This is a good starting tool for salesmen of all kinds, even if it is especially tailored to the car seller.

This book had some old but good techniques for building a book of business. First 8 chapters kept me reading but after that I struggled to finish the book because the lack of content and much talk about the car sales.

excellent repeat sales generators. I gave this book to a friend who is new to sales. I sold a lot of real estate and life insurance following Joe Girard's suggestions. Concepts are timeless. Just update methods for the 2st century

Excellent information and an easy read. I recently started dating someone with herpes and do not have it myself and this has helped me thoroughly understand the risks, ways I can protect myself, how to have conversations about it, psychological aspects of acquiring herpes, and more. This is what I wish sex ed was like in school! Real information about risks with no exaggeration, shame, or fear mongering.

Having recently had a long, very painful first outbreak, I bought this book to understand what was happening to me, and what I could expect for the future. It contains a lot of good information, and I highly recommend it as a fact/reality-check. Everything appears up-to-date, though I would've liked to see a summary with key facts in the back, to refer to in the future. The author covers what herpes is, the various types, how often you can expect an outbreak, how contagious you might be to partners, as well as basic preventative measures against outbreaks. Warren even goes briefly into other STDs, especially if they relate to herpes. Overall you're getting a great education on herpes, written in a very upfront manner - everything you should have known, or wish you had known before getting this STD - but which will help you lead a safer sexual life now.The book is very thorough on facts, but I was disappointed by how the emotional aspects were dealt with. As many people with herpes know, and certainly those who've had bad outbreaks, getting this disease can be very traumatic, leaving you wondering how or if you'll ever be able to responsibly have a normal sex life again. The author talks about the emotions, but it's done in a kind of 'handbook' style - as in, 'You're probably feeling this, and you might be feeling that... but the truth is, it's not that bad, or maybe you could have been more responsible, and yes your sex life will be different, but maybe that's not such a bad thing.'Personally, I found it unconvincing, a bit patronizing, and just not too helpful in that regard. It certainly didn't come close to helping me cope with the amount of pain I was in, and the dread of what it might mean for my entire sexual life. It reads like a doctor, giving you information, while trying to seem compassionate. It just didn't work that well for me.I also wanted a lot more information on the initial outbreak and how to cope with it, both physically and emotionally. How severe an initial outbreak can be differs widely from person to person. Some people don't even know they've been infected - while others, like me, feel they've caught the worst flu of their life, are in a lot of pain, and are totally drained of energy. The person who gave me herpes never had a bad reaction and thought "everyone has herpes anyway," so she thought there was no reason to tell me she was infected. These half-truths about herpes - that it's so common, and isn't that bad - and adding to the mix the emotional issues and stigma (from the medical establishment too, which simply ignores herpes in routine STD testing) - are what allows this disease to quietly rack up more and more victims each year. This book does confirm these facts for the most part. Yes, a lot of people do have herpes - maybe 20-50% of the population - and many don't have bad outbreaks, or that often. But that's not everyone. I didn't have herpes antibodies, and my symptoms were so bad I felt they could've put me in the hospital. So in that, I don't feel the book put as much effort in talking about the severe reactions and worser-case scenarios, which some of us will have. Yes, no author wants to add to the trauma or fear, but for those going through the worst-case, you really do want to know, if only to know that you're not alone. In closing - if you have had or are having a bad outbreak, or feel traumatized by this experience - I recommend reading another book alongside this one, to help you with the emotional issues - which are just as important if not more, to dealing with this disease constructively. I've skimmed through some of Kelly Shuh's books and may check out one of those in the future.Best wishes to you.

I whip out this book everytime I get insecurities and highly recommend this book to those who also have the disease or for those who would like to learn more about it

Not everything in here is accurate, and she’s supposed to be a specialist.

Because of this book, I learned that the tests are not 100% reliable and to get a second or third test to confirm. Here's my story: The nurse from my doctor's office called and said the results showed positive for exposure. I just took her report on good faith and began to process what this would mean in my life. I even joined a website for positive singles. Then I read this book. Because of it, I requested a hard copy of the test results. (the doctor's office didn't provide it) When I got the results, I saw that the antibodies tested into the positive range only by a tenth of a point- just barely outside equivocal. Not only that, but the antibodies were only positive for hsv-1, the kind typically associated with coldsores. But the results for hsv-2, the kind typically associated with geintal herpes was negative. The nurse had not told me either of these things over the phone. So I ordered an immunoblot blood test and it came back negative for both hsv-1 and hsv-2. I called my doctor's office to inform them of the nurse's mistake and suggested that they take a lot more time explaining results and encourage patients to confirm results after the initial test. Anyway, this book helped me advocate for my own health because no one cares about your health as much as you do! If you are definitely positive though, have faith! When I was working with the knowledge that I did have hsv, her information and guidance was so comforting and healing. I began to feel hopeful and encouraged that life goes on. She separated out the facts about the condition from the stigma that makes it seem so much worse than it is. Overall, this book is a great resource for facts and kindness.

This is the best reference i've found for herpes. info is laid out clearly, with frequent reassurances that seek to reduce feelings of shame and stigma in the sufferer. There are direct answers to questions regarding how to talk with potential partners, etc...all presented sensitively and in lay terms, while not skimping on the facts.

Loads of info about this dreaded disease

The author has, at last, written a comprehensive yet understandable guide to this virus. I wish this book had been available when I was first diagnosed in 1993. While I learned a lot more about herpes from this book even after all these years of living with it, the book was most valuable to me as a source of information to my current partner, who does not have the virus. After reading the book, she was able to make an informed, knowledgeable decision about becoming physically intimate. She remains free of the virus, due to both precautions and luck, but fully understands the risks and how to minimize them.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has herpes, or knows someone who does and wants to better understand it.

Winsor McCay: Early Works Volume 1, by Winsor McCay

From Publishers Weekly

McCay, one of early newspaper comics' major figures, delighted in seeing how a sequence of graphic images could lead readers to imagine reality transformed. The form best suited to that experiment, McCay found, was the dream, as in his famed "Little Nemo in Slumberland," that filled a page with glorious hijinks before returning to the waking world in the last panel. In the first section of this collection, "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" (19041914), people who have eaten rich foods have nightmares (e.g., a woman dreams her alligator skin purse becomes a real alligator that grows large enough to swallow her whole, then wakes up vowing never to overindulge again). The book also includes "Little Sammy Sneeze" (1903), whose eponymous protagonist always does his thing at the most inopportune moments; and "A Pilgrim's Progress" (19051910), a modern, secular version of Bunyan's tract, in which the melancholy traveler tries hopelessly to ditch his enormous valise. Readers may be uneasy with the racial and ethnic stereotypes innocently employed here (and rather strangely spotlighted on the cover), and they'll surely feel baffled when they encounter forgotten events, customs and slang (reading such old works requires as much mental gear-shifting as picking up a Japanese manga). However, McCay's art nouveau draftsmanship is superb, and it's fascinating to watch him experiment with the comics medium, as when Little Sammy's sneeze shatters the strip itself, leaving him staring at the reader out of a heap of panel surface and pieces of the border. Even in these early, relatively minor works, McCay's genius amazes and delights. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

McCay, the first great comic-strip artist, is most admired for "Little Nemo in Slumberland," about a small boy's dream adventures in a world of intricate architecture and astonishing changes in the sizes of figures and settings. McCay forged the situation and some characters of "Nemo" during the years 1903-10 in the strips generously sampled here: "Tales of the Jungle Imps," "Little Sammy Sneeze," "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend," and "A Pilgrim's Progress." The imps of the "Tales," a set of Just So Stories knockoffs, reappeared in "Nemo" (unfortunately, some think, because of their appearance--like Bart Simpson in blackface). Sammy Sneeze prefigures Nemo as a little-boy protagonist. "Rarebit Fiend" anticipates the dreaming and dream world of "Nemo," though with a new dreamer in each installment. The allegorical "Pilgrim's Progress" is dreamlike and focuses, like "Nemo," on a single protagonist. As in "Nemo," each episode of these series is a self-contained narrative; the richness of McCay's artwork, especially notable in "Little Sammy Sneeze," makes them forerunners of the graphic novel. And several episodes remain hilarious. Ray OlsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

The content is interesting as far as it goes (see below) but the reproduction quality on these volumes is rather spotty - some pages are quite nicely done, others not so great (the later volumes have some pretty atrocious prints in them - nothing here is too terribly bad, though some of the pieces - Jungle Imps in particular - have been reduced in size to the point where it's hard to fully appreciate them). No attempt at scholarship is made - all dates are approximate and no attempt is made to supply context for any of the works. One suspects that the dates that ARE given are untrustworthy. My main interest in acquiring these volumes was to get the Rarebit Fiend episodes not already collected elsewhere. As such, this volume is rather disappointing as it contains a straight reprint of the Dover volume - no more, no less. Well, a little less, actually, because they don't reprint the title page or the whimsical introduction (and the Dover is significantly larger and easier to read). It's clearly taken from the Dover edition because Checker also leaves out the final mysterious 'politically incorrect' episode mentioned in the Dover intro. Some of these episodes are duplicated in later volumes as well. The contents are approximately as follows: 60 pages of Rarebit Fiend (from the Dover), 40 pages of Tales of the Jungle Imps, 60 pages of Sammy Sneeze and 30 pages of Pilgrim's Progress. The Jungle Imps are interesting, but not so much my cup of tea. Sammy Sneeze holds very little interest for me (and the better ones have all been reproduced elsewhere in higher quality). Pilgrim is moderately amusing, but not nearly so intetresting as Rarebit Fiend in my view. As such, this volume was rather a letdown.

This is a collection of comics from over a century ago. It is shocking how much better the art is than most of today's stuff.

Winsor McCay has had "Little Nemo in Slumberland" reprinted in full colour in multiple volumes over the past several years, but his earlier and less well known work hasn't been served quite as well. Checker Book Publishing Group has tried to remedy that, and this book is valuable for the sheer *amount* of material that it covers. Over 200 pages cover four of McCay's early series - Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, Tales of the Jungle Imps, Sammy Sneeze, and A Pilgrim's Progress. Most of the Rarebit Fiend strips printed here were already seen in the Dover edition of the strips. The Tales of the Jungle Imps strips are still gorgeous in spite of the fact that McCay's colours have been printed as grey tones and the drawings are reprinted at an almost microscopic size. The Sammy Sneeze pages fare a little better. Some of the better reproduction is saved for the Pilgrim's Progress strip, which is a treat because it's not one of McCay's better known works. The book measures about 7x10 and is printed on a good, coated stock. If I were to suggest some things that would have improved the book, I would begin by asking for better and more literate introductions to the strips. For instance, in the book's introduction, it's claimed that Winsor McCay invented animation, and that in the history of animation, before there was Winsor McCay "there was nobody." That point is arguable, since Emil Reynaud (1892), James Stuart Blackton (1900), and Emile Cohl (1908) all got there before him. Was McCay THE BEST? Without a doubt. A true pioneer and trail blazer? Absolutely. The man was a genius. But his achievements, which were so great, need no exaggeration. Also, in the introduction to "A Pilgrim's Progress," it's mentioned that it was named after "John Bunyon's" 17th century book about the "human lifespan" of the same title. Actually, the spelling is "John Bunyan," and Bunyan's book was not an allegory about the "human lifespan," but an allegory about a Christian's spiritual journey. Not to be sarcastic, because this really is a good book, but some proofreading and a few minutes' worth of research might have prevented just that error. McCay's Pilgrim's Progress is an allegory about man's journey, but it is a secular allegory. It deals with the mundane cares that we deal with in life - and in the strip involving the drug addict who has tossed his "dull care" to the wind, the Pilgrim wisely chooses to endure his burden rather than give in to a greater evil. But to return to the book overall . . . The introductions are kept brief, which is a mixed blessing. It's good to let the work speak for itself, but at the same time, we are so far removed from the world of 1903-1910 that some historical or social commentary on individual strips would have been nice. Publish dates at the bottom of each page would have been a good addition too. I also hoped to see a selection of the incidental illustrations that McCay often did for the Cincinnati Enquirer included. This last request may be answered in later volumes in this series of books - I'd be thrilled if that were so. Congratulations to Mark Thompson and his staff for helping make some of the dreams of this rarebit fiend come true. Now, how about a tab size, full colour album of JUST the "Jungle Imps" pages . . . ?

It's some of the best art you'll ever see, but you havn't seen it yet because many of the characters are a reflection of those times 1904-1914; openly racist, but not in a KKK sort of way. It's more like Amos & Andy type of racism. The art is amazing, often surreal, and compared to what get's put in today's papers it just seems all the more fantastic. Some of the works must have been full two page newsprint size panels, because the copy in the book here has very small lettering. In full size, it must have been flabbergasting.

Nothing I'm going to say should deter you from choosing to read Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in the Outlander series. However, because Amazon tends to want readers to review, I am going to mention some elements of this book that gave me pause and kept it from being perfect. Overall, the book is as well written, researched and detailed as the previous three and worth the time I invested it it, but for me this one is not as thrilling and at times, felt ponderous. I plan to read the fifth book, but I am approaching it with the trepidatious fear of a decline in the overall quality of the series.******************************************************SPOILERS**********************************************************This book centers on the relationship between Claire's and Jamies' daughter, Brianna and Roger McKenzie Wakefield a historian and friend to Claire and Bree. They are two throughly modern young people in their early to late 20s. Both time travel to the mid-18th Century, Bree in search of her mother and father, Roger in search of Bree. I found it easier to accept Claire's initial time travel and subsequent return because both her generational upbringing ( England in the 20s and 30s) and her marriage to a scholarly historian would give her just a bit if a leg up on making the transition. Bree, on the other hand is a child of the 50s and 60s. She's been brought up in America and retains her fairly modern speech patterns and many of the idioms. Those idiosyncrasies don't seem to cause much if a stir among the strangers that she meets. It's not a huge thing, but it did notice it.My second and somewhat larger complaint lay in Bree's Olympic quality conclusion jumping. She and Roger become married by hand fasting and consummate their relationship. Two days later she is raped by a pirate. Upon finding herself pregnant she is immediately convinced that it is the child of the pirate. Much of the relationship angst between her and Roger revolves around that assumption. I found it a bit drawn out and contrived, but then many of Bree's actions and attitudes fell into that category for me. Bottom line, I found Bree to be impulsive, headstrong and a bit of a pain in the backside. The best thing Ms. Galbadon does is to write characters who are very, very human. In other words, flawed. I am giving Ms. Galbadon the benefit of the doubt that that was her thinking behind the writing of Bree's character. My last concern centers on a scene with Claire as she performs inguinal hernia surgery on a man in the midst of a dinner party. Even in the barbaric American colonies, a woman performing surgery in the region of a man's testicles in the midst of a dinner party strains credulity. The fact that this surgery was witnessed almost without comment by the dinner guests breaks it completely. It was a well written scene, but I just couldn't "buy it."I've enjoyed these books up to this point. Fingers crossed that the author's imagination doesn't stray too far in to the realm of incredulity in the next books.

I never thought I'd be the kind of person who would get swept up in a series of thousand-page epic fantasy adventure book, but here I am having finished book #4, mad that I have to wait a couple of days until the next installment arrives in the mail. I spoiled myself a little for Drums of Autumn, not so much on its contents, but I became aware that many fans consider this to be one of their least favorites, and one of the slowest of the books. So I went into it with a bit of a bias that I have to say was happily proven incorrect. For me, this book almost lived up to Voyager, and was miles above Dragonfly in Amber. Not going to lie, for me one of my favorite elements of the series will always be the Highlands, and I'm still disappointed we didn't get more time there. I assumed I didn't love DiA as much as the others because the setting moved from Scotland to France. But that wasn't it, because the move to the American colonies I had been dreading wound up working well. I think what went wrong with DiA was the remake of Jamie into kind of a dandy, trying to fit in with the silly French noble class. Jamie just doesn't make sense to me as a character outside of a rugged setting with a battle to fight. I worried I wouldn't enjoy the expanding cast of characters, or the shift in focus outside the Jamie/Claire dynamic, but it wasn't as clumsy as I'd feared. That said, I like both Brianna and Roger a little less after this book. In large doses, they are both super annoying. But I could read about Ian (and Rollo!) and Lord John all day.I didn't think the plot was slow. In fact, it gets a little old for me when Jamie and Claire have to escape death every 20 pages. But there was still a lot of story movement here. Enough to make it a page turner for me, for sure.

I have been readying all of the books and also watched the Star's serious so I got through this book but I do not think it was one of the best. These book are meant to be part of a series but also supposed to be able to stand alone. If this is the first book I picked up, I would not have read another. It was too slow and got into too much detail about the activities of daily living. I did find a lot of that interesting from a historical point of view but it got rather tedious and would have preferred more fast paced adventure like in the first two books. I am now on the next book and it a lot better. I will continue to read the series because I love all of the characters so much. If you are reading the series, I would recommend that you read this book just so you know what is going on but if you are going to read just this one, don't bother.
