Although I was familiar with the tragic story of Oscar Wilde, I didn't know much about his wife Constance Lloyd. How did she meet Oscar? Was the attraction mutual? How much did she know about her husband, and at what point in their marriage? Why did she die so young, predeceasing her husband? Quoting liberally from Constance's unpublished letters (primarily to her brother Otho and to older women friends; the Oscar-Constance correspondence has disappeared), Fanny Moyle creates a portrait of Constance in her own right. Constance labored to create an "artistic marriage" with Oscar despite her own unhappy childhood, including a strained relationship with her mother that left her aching for mother surrogates. During her marriage, she supported Oscar in his career while pursuing her own interests in women's rights, hygienic dress, home decoration, children's literature, spiritualism, and theosophy. Her health was never good, however, and her bodily aches and weaknesses were exacerbated by Oscar's scandalous trial and incarceration. Having changed her name and fled to the Continent with their two sons, she died aged 40 of a botched operation.One comes away from this biography with admiration and pity for Constance, a woman scarred by an unhappy childhood but doing the best she could to create a companionate marriage and a safe haven for her sons while exploring her own interests and passions. Her life ended in tragedy, but given the enormity of her husband's downfall, one wonders which Victorian wife could have done better.This biography hooks the reader from the first sentence ("Dear Constance: I am coming to see you at nine o'clock. Please be in —it is important. Ever yours Oscar"). Moyle has a sprightly writing style marred only by the occasional misplaced modifier: "Resentful and lonely, Ada's marital unhappiness prompted regular visits to her mother." In addition, the book has no foreword, which is a pity, as readers would appreciate a note from Moyle describing how she became interested in Constance and went about investigating her life.A fascinating subject and a good read!
I enjoyed reading about Constance Lloyd, and think the author provided a compelling narrative, bringing the reader into this period, with wonderful richness, in detailing a fascinating time. It is a bittersweet story, because, for Constance, as much as the world was changing, relative to their era, it was a century away from providing this exquisite woman. with the life she deserved, not, because of Oscar, but, her own talents and gifts.I thought the author was even-handed with Oscar, without celebrating him, as some unrealistically sainted founder of gay rights, but, as another complex soul, truly talented, but, self-obsessed, with no great worries, about anything other than hedonism and fame, much like the pop culture of today.Neither Constance nor Oscar had long happy lives, yet, Constance, was obviously his muse, for so many of Oscar's characters and works, and in understanding her, you can see this, and how he idealized her. Even though they had consented to have a platonic marriage, there was a respect and devotion between them, even in betrayal, until their mutually tragic final few years of life. She was sick, and he threw it all away in his insane attempt to either validate or vindicate himself, leading to his personal and professional demise.The crowds, who thronged to his plays, and were attracted to them, undoubtedly saw a very modern young power couple, with the world on a string, as if they were personally heralding in a new age, of culture and enlightenment. Indeed, that new century, would be all they intended, and more. They had success, wealth, youth, celebrity, but, before the ''naughty'' nineties, of their age was done, they failed to join the parade into the 20th Century. But, at the same time, they epitomized the 19th Century, in art, culture, even fashion, shifting morality, spirituality and beliefs. Oscar's own hubris was his undoing, yet, you manage to even pity him, a little, mainly, for wasting so many blessings, resources, talents, and destroying himself. I could picture him, wretched and hovering over his remorse and recriminations, while incarcerated, for his wretched folly, when writing, ''For each man kills the thing he loves....'' recognizing how profoundly personal it was for him. However, Oscar is not the star of this book, Constance Lloyd's voice is heard, through her words, her sense of humor, her inner and outer beauty, while never seeming vain, her vain search for meaning in secret societies, and in high echelon cultured circles, portrayed her seeking something greater in life. I would like to believe she is at peace, with eternity, especially, since her story has been told, charmingly, and heartbreakingly, in this easy to read biography.
The writing began on the dry side and I had a difficult time actually getting into it. However, the author somehow picked up a pace which was intriguing and the last 2/3 went quickly. One can only feel great sorrow for Constance and her sons. The utterly cavalier disregard and disdain showered on her by Wilde was more than repulsive to read about. Intriguingly, many years ago I had written about Wilde and his trial, much of which didn't enter this story since emphasis was on Constance, not Oscar. Scarred by the disgrace of their father's behavior, lack of concern made life exceedingly difficult for the young boys. Vilified, not permitted back into their schools (already in exile), life had to be difficult beyond the reader's imagining. Ms. Moyle does convey that sense of horror to the reader; the tragic and senseless end of Constance's life, through the bungling of the maladroit surgeon has the reader feeling a deep sense of sadness. A young woman, just 40, to have spent her life careening through the best that her world had to offer in arts and literature, to degradation through the selfishness of her husband, one is left spent by thewretchedness and speed of this decline.
