I am mostly writing a review regarding appropriate reader age and maturity. I purchased this book to read aloud to my 12 and 7 year old for American History. I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the woods and the skills. Also loved the post chapter chapters with history lessons. But the book is very graphic. I am usually prepared for such accuracy and welcome it as part of the true story. But I had to edit so much of each paragraph that I gave up at chapter 6. Lots of details about murders and scalping. My review is not negative just informational. I would not allow my students under the age of 14 or 15 to read this book.

I am reading this with a group of eighth grade special education students with mild learning disabilities, and they are truly enjoying this book. It is helping them to understand their current Social Studies content while also engaging them in a deeply emotional and exciting journey. Thank you, Gary Paulsen, for capturing the interest of reluctant readers with a very important story to tell. You've once again enriched my classroom.

I assigned this to my son as part of our homeschool curriculum. His review is below:I think the book was fine because it's educational and suspenseful, and it shows how things were like back in the war between the Americans and the British. The reason I didn't give it four or five stars was because it did not have much excitement, and things moved kind of slowly. Well written, fast paced story. The main character is relate-able and likable. I appreciate the fact pages interspersed into the book these pages tell the facts and some figured of the war. Supports the fictional story is based on real events with factual details.

This was an amazing historical novel that teaches our young readers about some of the struggles families had during the Revolutionary War. It teaches them that we need to care for other people around us, and we can accomplish more than we ever thought possible if we try hard. The story is engaging and keeps the action flowing. Our young readers won't want to put the book down. It is short enough not to overwhelm struggling readers.

I was reading this with my students. This helped save my voice. The reader uses great expression. Abner's accent was perfect.

This is an excellent, well-written book that tells the story of the cocaine addictions of Sigmund Freud and William Halsted. The author is both a medical doctor and professor of the History of Medicine, and his expertise in both fields clearly shows through in this delightful and informative book. The book provides mini-biographies of both men as well as a history of cocaine. The book is indeed an anatomy of the addiction of these two men, both to cocaine and to morphine, which they took to mitigate the effects of the cocaine. The book details the impact these drugs had on their lives, and also discusses the subject of addiction in general, which I though gave important insights into this subject. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a good biography, the history of medicine, or in a well-written non-fiction book.What is in the book (spoiler alert) -While Freud appears to have eventually overcome his addiction, whereas Halsted appears to never have been completely able to do so and required daily morphine injections to eliminate his cravings for cocaine. There is evidence that he periodically went on cocaine binges, requiring a lifetime of morphine addiction. Contrary to what is sometimes reported, cocaine did not improve either man’s abilities - much to the contrary, the brief sense of euphoria and improved concentration that they believed the drug gave them was more than outweighed by the crash and depression that followed high the drug gave them. Furthermore, the sense of improved concentration and insight that they initially believed the drug gave them proved also to be illusory.Freud eventually gave up the drug after it almost led to the death of a patient, which could have ended, or at least stifled, his medical career. Halsted had to check himself into a mental hospital to rid himself of his cocaine addition, but he relapsed and had to do this several times, eventually settling on periodic cocaine binges and a lifetime of morphine addition. Halsted’s addiction shortchanged his patients, the students he was training and the medical profession in general and is an object lesson in the danger of addiction of any kind. It is unclear how much of Freud’s ideas were cocaine fueled, as much of his work was done after he stopped taking the drug, but it is clear that it was of no real benefit to his thinking.The only positive feature of cocaine was its use as a topical anesthetic, which revolutionized dentistry and eye surgery. Freud mentioned the use of cocaine as a local anesthetic in his treatise on cocaine, Uber Coca, but it was a colleague, Carl Koller who pioneered its use as an anesthetic for eye surgery, thereby gaining the acclaim that Freud regretted missing out on because he was focusing on the psychoactive aspects of the drug. Freud considered cocaine to be a wonder drug, only to become personally acquainted with the ultimately destructive and dangerous aspects of its use. Cocaine as an anesthetic has largely been replaced by synthetic drugs such as Novocain and Lidocaine, which preserve the anesthetic qualities of cocaine, without its addictive and psychoactive affects.

In finishing this book, which was hard to put down, sent me searching for other books by this author. It is one of the best presentations that I have read, complete with excellent notes, and close to 100 pertinent illustraions, The scholarship of this Medical Historian is extraordinary.While the focus is on two contemporay physcians, both trapped by the addictive powers of cocaine, Markel details enlightens us as to the ways of the era of modern medicine. Freud and Halsted (the premier surgeon-in-chief of the John Hopkins Hospital) belief that the super drug potentially capable of curing anything. It would bring them fame and fortune as a pharmaceutical. Sadly there personal trials brought them a debilitating curse. The study details the pathological dispersion of addiction in a manner that is very easily understood by a layman. Through-out the book is written to be understood, and the story line will captivate you. To readers,as myself, the author Markel may be addictive!

"An Anatomy of Addiction" by Howard Markel examines two famous doctors, Sigmund Freud and William Halsted and their addiction to cocaine. Freud, who invented psychoanalysis, the search for self-truth, became convinced that cocaine was a miracle drug with no side effects. Halsted, considered to be the father of modern surgery was probably the first cocaine addict to come to the attention of medical professionals in the United States. Peruvian Indians on the eastern slopes of the Andes have been chewing coca leaves for centuries. Their Inca ancestors used it in many religious rituals and initiation rites. Chewing coca leaves was found to have the remarkable ability to suppress hunger, increase tolerance, and stretch the bounds of human endurance, but is no more harmful than several cups of coffee. It wasn't until around 1860 that the devil was unleashed by a German scientist who converted the leaves into the highly purified coca alkaloid. If there is such a thing as an addictive personality, Freud certainly had it. He became so enamored with cocaine and fascinated with its effects on the mind that he considered it a treatment for morphine addiction and depression among many other ailments. Halsted was interested in the drug's anesthetic qualities and how it could aid him in surgery, so began experimenting on himself by injecting the drug into his arm. Both men consumed great quantities of the drug and eventually encountered serious problems because they had done so. At the time, the late 1800's, addiction as a bona fide medical diagnosis was not in the medical vocabulary. Freud struggled with this demon for twelve years and Halsted, it is speculated, struggled with cocaine as well as morphine addiction until his death in 1922. "An Anatomy of Addiction" is a fascinating read. It is a study in the diabolical power of addiction and the role cocaine played in the budding careers of two world-changing geniuses. Pros: Short (~180 pages) in full color. Easy to follow, big font, SMALL coding samples. You won't die trying to get through this book. Easy to make notes, not to lose interest, and to cover basic concepts one at a time so you can go back to youtube or a larger book to see each concept more in-depth. Keeps you organized. I'd say this book is geared towards children with all the color, but it greatly helped me (I'm 24).Cons: Covers the basics (great for beginners!) thus good only if you're a super beginner to programming in general. Also doesn't cover the basics in depth- just code, straight to the point. What it is and how to use it, no theory behind it. Some examples redundant or useless, and some things (ie the use of this->) isn't encouraged in the c++ community the way its illustrated. But again, not a big deal, and much of it is personal preference.Suggestion: If you're new to programming and are trying to pick up these skills, get this book. Get CodeBlocks or NetBeans or a similar platform downloaded, and get a git account (free) to upload your code online to GitHub. Git will keep you motivated to continue (you can track your status, etc). Good luck!

I started years ago with Mike McGrath's "C Programming in Easy Steps" I picked up in London before I found them in the USA.As a hardware designer more and more of my designs have embedded processors. Today most processors are supplied with reference designs, eval boards, and sample code including C++ code that runs under a OS on a host.What I needed was a top level guide to understand the sample code sufficiently to tailor it to my specific application and a reference to decipher the error messages as a result of my tailoring. McGarth's book was perfect. I have long since graduated to a book shelf of "heavy" C reference books which I use. But McGarth's book is within close reach for the occasion when I haven't used a function for a while and need a quick peek to remember the correct syntax.C++ Programming in Easy Steps has proven to be as useful as the C version as I tackle C++ sample code for a host OS application. The book’s format is very clean and well organized. Each section has at least one complete example and avoids generalized snippets that only a CS major would appreciate. He includes useful Tips and “Beware” to avoid common pit-falls many people fall into when first writing code. His books are not full of what is supposed to be humor as some are. They are very clear and to the point.If you are a student, hobbyist, old Fortran coder, or a hardware designer and need to bang out some rudimentary C++ code for a project this book is highly recommended.

I love this author, I've read a few of his other books, he gets right to the point and manages to teach all the basics and a little more. I wish he wrote more books though (maybe on Unity, please please!) =/I've read dozens of programming books over the years and his C++ and now this C# ones are two of my favorites.

Back in 1999 I took a class and C programming and found the process of programming very frustrating and confusing that I became a server engineer. Flash forward to today and I am forced to write a handful of apps for my Unix/Linux team which would save us time on mundane tasks. I picked up this book knowing that C was a major challenge for me in the past and I am very glad I did. This book clearly explains several concepts with which I could not grasp when I was younger and helpful in learning the C language. If you are interested in learning C as novice or if you are frustrated with other C books by all means get this book. There are a few errors but most of them are with function most beginners will not deal with such as memory manipulation.

I bought this book while trying to digest my textbook for class ("C++ Primer Plus" Fifth Edition by Stephen Prata), which is the highest rated textbook on the subject as of January 2012.Already versed in C and C#, I thought I'd take this class to finish my understanding of the C family.Not it is the most technical and diverse of them all, but also the most bulky and the most confusing.My textbook had a lot of words, like most textbooks, and not enough examples. I prefer to learn by being shown and being able to copy the programs and pick each bit apart. Needless to say without those types of examples aplenty, I was growing more and more confused and more and more behind in class.I pawed for a quick fix to my misunderstandings and low and behold, I find this quick guide.This book is amazing. The wording is easy, fast, and to the point. You can devour a chapter in less then ten minutes and have PLENTY of time to fool around with what you've learned after! The book is nicely done. It gave me a lot of good ideas of items I might include in a Nature journal. For that, I found it very useful. The drawback to this journal is its size. There is not enough space for a given date for recording detailed nature observations. I still find it valuable, but the type of information that I plan to record needs more space. This book will serve more as my Index for a separate journal in which I record day-to-day details about the Nature I observe. That journal will contain pertinent weather data, records of plantings, sproutings, and harvests, animals and insects observed, and other similar data. There is far too much occurring out in the natural world for a single volume to follow for a five-year period. But, this provides a structure for what to observe, and will make an excellent index document.I also like the overall book design, and the quality of the paper and printing.

For those of you who find pleasure in observation and journaling, this book is a must. Subtitled “tracking changes in the natural world around you,” it is an informative and beautiful resource for observations and tracking of what is going on in your chosen habitat. And it is an autodidact’s delight, filled with useful and interesting information and crisp line drawings as illustrations.The authors are both academics as well as practitioners in the observation and understanding of the natural world. Their books are many and graced with notable awards. The wonder and curiosity of their studies makes for pleasure in reading.The book is a compilation of readings, drawings, and charts for the naturalist, be she professional, amateur, beginner, or professional. When I saw this notebook highlighted in Birds & Blooms magazine this fall, started the search for vendors selling it. I have a daughter and a granddaughter who delight in the outdoors: everything from bird watching to, well name it; if it is enjoyed outdoors, they will enjoy it. Both were thrilled to receive this notebook for Christmas. In fact, granddaughter opened hers before daughter opened hers, and she had made note to find a copy for herself.

I previously had kept notes about nature on my daily calendar. However, it was difficult to compare from one year to the next. This book is great because it is super easy to compare from year to year. My only complaint would be that some days I need a little more space to write but I have learned to adapt to that. All in all, a great book.

The construction of the book itself is nicely done. The images are beautiful and the information is well-written. The lower star rating is because I desired more space to record my own observations. The only spaces for this are on basic calendar pages you could print off from any word or excel file; definitely NOT a calendar journal. They don't leave enough space for any detailed observations, so it's quite frustrating. I missed my window to return the book, so I'll just be donating it as it really has no use to me.

Beautifully bound, filled with useful information. Love it.The only suggestion I'd have in future volumes is to include a folder in the back cover where photos, sketches and additional written observations can be placed.

I'm a big fan of Chris McMullen's workbooks, generally just for the extra practice problems. This one, though, is really well done. It isn't advanced, but is a nifty little book to give kids an idea of how to look for the pattern (instead of the answer.) Most of the patterns are pretty clear, but there are enough slightly tricky ones to throw a kid off their game if they're just trying to find an answer or taking the "This is easy, I don't have to work at it" approach.The schools do very little (if any) pattern work with the kids and it's on the dang SAT, so they need to learn it and they must begin somewhere. This is an EXCELLENT place to begin.Now if he'd just write a tougher one. I cannot seem to find a good book for the next step up.

I think is a great math puzzle book. Very engaging as well as challenging, with just the right amount of difficulty for me.
